  • Only in My Dreams

Only in My Dreams by Darcy Burke

Only in My Dreams by Darcy Burke is 99c! This is a contemporary romance with a friends with benefits plot between a woman and her high school crush. It’s also a small town romance, so clearly there’s some catnip for everyone. Many readers noted that Burke was a new author for them and wound up really enjoying this first book in the series. It has a 4.2-star rating on GoodReads.

Fed up with her self-imposed single life, successful event planner Sara Archer heads to a bar for a night of dancing … and bumps into Dylan Wescott, the high school crush she hasn’t seen in years. A little harmless flirting leads to a hot, completely uncharacteristic one-night stand; but when she wakes up alone, Sara knows her life is too complicated for a relationship and there can’t be a repeat.

Dylan, a divorced, ex-military construction contractor, limits himself to casual flings—his failed marriage proves he’s better off alone anyway—but he can’t stop dreaming about Sara. And when his firm is hired to oversee the renovation project run by the Archer siblings, Dylan and Sara are unable to resist their explosive chemistry.

But when their secret affair grows beyond “friends with benefits” and neither is willing to admit they want more, family drama and emotional scars may ruin their chance at a love they believed was only in their dreams.

  • Ladies’ Night

Ladies’ Night by Mary Kay Andrews

Ladies’ Night by Mary Kay Andrews is $2.99! As part of her weekly “divorce therapy” sessions, a woman befriends three other women and a man. Hijinks ensue. This book is women’s fiction and the main plotline deals with infidelity, which some readers found rather depressing. However, others loved the heroine and fully admit to grinning like an idiot by the end of the book. Any Andrews fans in the Bitchery?

Rising media star and lifestyle blogger Grace Stanton’s own life gets torpedoed after she drives her cheating husband’s pricey sports car straight into the family swimming pool in a fit of anger. Soon she’s locked out of her own palatial home, checking account, and blog, forced to move in with her widowed mother who lives above, and owns, The Sandbar, a rundown beach bar. Attending court-mandated weekly “divorce recovery” therapy sessions with a group of three other women, marital misfits whose only common denominator is betrayal, Grace and the women soon ditch their therapist and move their Wednesday “Ladies’ Night” sessions to The Sandbox. They begin to help each other, walking a fine line between revenge and justice, as each one finds closure in ways previously unimagined.  Can Grace figure out a new way home and how strong she needs to be to get there? Told with Mary Kay Andrews’s unique blend of humor, heart, and unpredictable plot twists, Ladies’ Night will have you raising a glass and cheering these characters on.

  • True Love

    True Love by Jude Deveraux

True Love by Jude Deveraux is $1.99! A bit of a deviation from her usual historical fare, this is a contemporary romance set on Nantucket. I actually just read the third book in the Nantucket Brides Trilogy (my first Deveraux, by the way) and I really liked it, though it’s a bit more wholesome than what I typically read. Readers mentioned some issues with pacing; the book drags at times. On the other hand, a few readers loved the rich detail of the characters and the setting. It has a 3.9-star rating on GoodReads.

Just as Alix Madsen is finishing up architectural school, Adelaide Kingsley dies and wills her, for one year, the use of a charming nineteenth-century Nantucket house. The elderly woman’s relationship to the Madsen family is a mystery to the spirited Alix—fresh from a romantic breakup—but for reasons of her own Alix accepts the quirky bequest, in part because it gives her time to plan her best friend’s storybook wedding.

But unseen forces move behind the scenes, creaking Kingsley House’s ancient floorboards. It seems that Adelaide Kingsley had a rather specific task for Alix: to solve the strange disappearance of one of the Kingsley women, Valentina, more than two hundred years ago. If that wasn’t troubling enough, Alix must deal with the arrogant (and extremely good-looking) architect Jared Montgomery, who is living in the property’s guesthouse.

Unbeknown to Alix, Jared has been charged with looking after her while she lives on the island—an easy task for him, considering the undeniable chemistry between the two. But Jared harbors secrets of his own, which, if revealed, may drive a wedge between the pair.

With a glorious Nantucket wedding on the horizon, sparks fly, and the ghosts of the past begin to reveal themselves—some of them literally. Finding their lives inextricably entwined with the turbulent fortunes of their ancestors, Alix and Jared discover that only by righting the wrongs of the past can they hope to be together.

  • Handle with Care

Handle with Care by Jodi Picoult

Handle with Care by Jodi Picoult is $1.99! Admittedly, I’ve always stayed away from Picoult novels because I just know they’re going to reduce me to a blubbering mess. I know there are some readers who steer clear of children in peril, so I will issue a warning that the child in this book has an illness. Several readers made comparisons to Picoult’s previous titles and how similar they were. Any Picoult readers care to chime in?

Every expectant parent will tell you that they don’t want a perfect baby, just a healthy one. Charlotte and Sean O’Keefe would have asked for a healthy baby, too, if they’d been given the choice. Instead, their lives are made up of sleepless nights, mounting bills, the pitying stares of “luckier” parents, and maybe worst of all, the what-ifs. What if their child had been born healthy? But it’s all worth it because Willow is, funny as it seems, perfect. She’s smart as a whip, on her way to being as pretty as her mother, kind, brave, and for a five-year-old an unexpectedly deep source of wisdom. Willow is Willow, in sickness and in health.

Everything changes, though, after a series of events forces Charlotte and her husband to confront the most serious what-ifs of all. What if Charlotte had known earlier of Willow’s illness? What if things could have been different? What if their beloved Willow had never been born? To do Willow justice, Charlotte must ask herself these questions and one more. What constitutes a valuable life?

Emotionally riveting and profoundly moving, Handle with Care is an unforgettable novel about the fragility of life and the lengths we will go to protect it.

Man, I hated the one Picoult book I read– so manipulative, and betrayed the characters– but she’s sure got a lot of fans.

  2. Lauren says:

Not a fan of that Picoult. I’ve read a few, and most end up being heart-breaking-but-good or ugh-let-me-throw-this-across-the-room-I-hate-this-ending. Unfortunately, Handle with Care falls squarely into the second category for very spoiler-y reasons, but mostly the complete and utter lack of any type of happy ending for anyone (which is my anti-catnip… is there a word for that?)

  3. LauraL says:

Also not a Picoult fan. A friend me a book and I returned it unfinished. However, I am a Mary Kay Andrews fan. Ladies Night was her beach book for last year. I liked Summer Rental from a few years earlier much better.

  4. Lina says:

I really haven’t read any Deveraux but her historicals. Anyone know if her contemporaries are just as good? I hate to pile more meh on my tbr list.

  5. bnbsrose says:

@Vasha that’s exactly how I feel about Piccoult. I like my heart stings tugged, not yanked around like a puppy on a leash.

  6. Azure says:

Jodi Picoult books are hit-and-miss for me. “Handle with Care” fell in the middle–I hated the ending, which I will not spoil, except to say that it was infuriating.

  7. Kim says:

I’m definitely a Mary Kay Andrews fan. She tells a great story.

  8. Vicki says:

Just to throw in my two cents worth, I do like a number of the Jodi Picoult books though others do not do it for me. There are several that I have re-read several times. My first Picoult was The Pact, lent to me by a new co-worker who did not realize that I had just, two months earlier, lost a child to suicide. If I had know the plot involved teen suicide, I might not have read it but I did and I found it somewhat healing.

I enjoyed Vanishing Acts a lot, about a young woman who finds that she is not who she thinks she is. This book explores parent and child relationships, as well as other relationships. I enjoyed the main characters and found the book engaging and fairly realistic.

I liked Nineteen Minutes, about a school shooting, again I found it engaging for the most part, though somewhat harrowing at times. I really like the mothers in the book and the choices they faced.

Mercy, which deals with terminal illness and with life choices, I also liked. End of life issues are an interest for me and this was an interesting exploration. Also the relationships.

I also enjoyed Sister’s Keeper, though not quite as much, and Second Glance, more for what I learned than for the story. I did less well with Salem Falls, Plain Truth, and House Rules. Handle With Care, the sale book today, was also less involving for me, partly, I think, because this is a disease I have dealt with a lot and not all the medicine was truly right on.

  9. Tracey Parker says:

I loved Dary Burke’s Only in my Dreams! This story and series is great!I can’t wait for more!
I haven’t read the others but look forward to them.

  10. I love Only In My Dreams by Darcy Burke. Great beginning to Ribbon Ridge. The Archers are a messy and lovable family. Love Dylan too!!

  11. Lora says:

I love the Books On Sale feature…even if it does end up costing me a fortune! I want to add one here that’s actually free right now on Kindle. The Star Prophecy by Ainsley Brooks, epic fantasy with a butt-kicking channeler heroine Aerdrin on a mission to save Throne Prince Alkaidin Thane and his kingdom. Kaid is hella hot, the female characters are strong, complex and positive all around and the sequel novella The Priestess is awesome, too.

Here’s the link if you want to try out this freebie. It’s well worth the read if you like fantasy romance! http://www.amazon.com/Star-Prophecy-Daughters-Book-ebook/dp/B00H9YWA8U/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1428079378&sr=8-2&keywords=star+prophecy

  12. Lora says:

Also, does Kearsley have the most stunning, gorgeous covers that exist? Every single one of them is my definition of eye candy. Whomever designed The Winter Sea and Firebird is truly an artist!

And I avoid Picoult because the weeping! I don’t like to feel like my heartstrings are being yanked forcibly from my chest. I get mad when I think things are contrived. And yet she makes me cry every damned time. She strikes a chord, even if it’s one I want left alone.

  13. LaineyT says:

FYI, Kobo (in Canada at least, don’t know about anywhere else) is offering up to 70% off selected ebooks for the Easter long weekend. Included on the list of books on sale are Susanna Kearsley’s The Firebird and The Bollywood Affair, both on sale for $2.99.
