Prophecy

Prophecy by Ellen Oh is $1.99! This is the first book in a YA fantasy trilogy based on dragons, which reminds me Shana Abe’s Drakon series. Some people felt this was more Middle Grade high fantasy rather than Young Adult. Maybe someone can comment on that because I haven’t read it. However, the heroine, Kira, was a big high point for the series, given her badassery. Any takers?
The greatest warrior in all of the Seven Kingdoms… is a girl with yellow eyes.
Kira’s the only female in the king’s army, and the prince’s bodyguard. She’s a demon slayer and an outcast, hated by nearly everyone in her home city of Hansong. And, she’s their only hope…
Murdered kings and discovered traitors point to a demon invasion, sending Kira on the run with the young prince. He may be the savior predicted in the Dragon King Prophecy, but the missing treasure of myth may be the true key. With only the guidance of the cryptic prophecy, Kira must battle demon soldiers, evil shaman, and the Demon Lord himself to find what was once lost and raise a prince into a king.
Intrigue and mystery, ancient lore and action-packed fantasy come together in this heart-stopping first book in a trilogy.

The Shadow Prince by Bree Despain is $1.99! This looks to be a Hades/Persephone retelling set at a high school and, you know what, I’m down with that. In a completely cracktastic way. Though a few readers loved the idea and the potential around the plot, some felt that moving the story along took forever. It has a 3.8-star rating on GoodReads and is the first in the Into the Dark series.
Haden Lord, the disgraced prince of the Underrealm, has been sent to the mortal world to entice a girl into returning with him to the land of the dead. Posing as a student at Olympus Hills High—a haven for children of the rich and famous—Haden must single out the one girl rumored to be able to restore immortality to his race.
Daphne Raines has dreams much bigger than her tiny southern Utah town, so when her rock star dad suddenly reappears, offering her full tuition to Olympus Hills High’s prestigious music program, she sees an opportunity to catch the break she needs to make it as a singer. But upon moving into her estranged father’s mansion in California, and attending her glamorous new school, Daphne soon realizes she isn’t the only student in Olympus who doesn’t quite belong.
Haden and Daphne—destined for each other—know nothing of the true stakes their fated courtship entails. As war between the gods brews, the teenagers’ lives collide. But Daphne won’t be wooed easily and when it seems their prophesied link could happen, Haden realizes something he never intended—he’s fallen in love. Now to save themselves, Haden and Daphne must rewrite their destinies. But as their destinies change, so do the fates of both their worlds.

Elusion by Claudia Gabel and Cheryl Klam is $1.99! And I must say that YA has some gorgeous covers. This is a little more science fiction than fantasy and readers really liked the setting, especially in regards to the technology aspects of the world and plot. However, the heroine seemed to be a low point for some. Has anyone read this book?
Soon, Elusion® will change the world and life as we know it.
A new technology called Elusion is sweeping the country. An app, visor and wristband will virtually transport you to an exotic destination where adventure can be pursued without the complications—or consequences—of real life.
Regan is an Elusion insider. Or at least she used to be. Her father invented the program, and her best friend, Patrick, heir to the tech giant Orexis, is about to release it nationwide. But ever since her father’s unexpected death, Regan can’t bear to Escape, especially since waking up from the dream means crashing back to her grim reality.
Still, when there are rumors of trouble in Elusion—accusations that it’s addictive and dangerous— Regan is determined to defend it. But the critics of Elusion come from surprising sources, including Josh, the handsome skeptic with his own personal stakes. As Regan investigates the claims, she discovers a disturbing web of secrets. She will soon have to choose between love and loyalty…a decision that will affect the lives of millions.
Suspense, thrills, and romance fuel this near-future story about the seductive nature of a perfect virtual world, and how far one girl will go to uncover the truth behind the illusions.

I am obviously too stupid to participate in this activity. Please tell me that I am not the only one who gives up in despair at trying to make this work! I finally made it through Round One and thought ‘Aha! I have it.’ Then Round 2 hit. I know it can’t be that hard. Why can’t I do it?
Ha! I just went back and did it! Woot! I didn’t realize that I had to pick again from the two titles in Round 6!
I have not read Prophecy but my middle schooler did and attended an author reading/book signing through her school – suggesting it’s being marketed to younger readers. My daughter liked it but said some of her friends found the cast of characters confusing.
I have to admit I’ve been vehemently uninterested in Dorothy Must Die, because it seems to be making Oz super dark just for the sake of being dark. As far as stories which really get into complications and creepy stories in Oz, I stick with the webcomic Namesake. It brings in darkness and depth while also keeping the silliness and wonder of the setting. …Also it’s just astoundingly good on every level.
One of my favorite myth re-tellings is “The Dark Wife” by Sarah Diemer, YA lesbian re-telling of the myth of Hades and Persephone. It’s consistently $4.99 and I would pay twice that for this book.
Just an FYI. DA posted the Dorothy book in their daily deals last week and then pulled it after someone pointed out in the comments that Paige was a Kathleen Hale supporter. YMMV.
@Sandra: Thank you for letting us know! I clearly had no idea and now that I do, I’ve removed the book.
Heather S beat me to it! The Dark Wife is fantastic, a creative story with a great romance. If you want a Persephone/Hades retelling, start there. Sarah and Jennifer Diemer also have a great book of novellas, Sappho’s Fables, Volume 1, retelling Hansel and Gretel, Rapunzel, and Snow White. Very creative variations on the original theme. She also has novels (Twixt) and short stories (like the collection Love Devours) with her very own mythic tales, all with some romantic element.
