The Heiress Effect

RECOMMENDED: The Heiress Effect by Courtney Milan is .99 right now. This is a much-loved historical – both Carrie S and RedHeadedGirl gave it an A. Carrie wrote about how much she loved the disparate styles of the hero and heroine who used different means to achieve the same goal of hiding in plain sight: “Oliver survives by blending, but Jane survives by clashing with her surroundings as much as possible without openly breaching decorum.”
And RedHeadedGirl wrote in her review, “COURTNEY MILAN HOW DO YOU BRAIN.
There was NOT A GOOD GODDAMN THING I DID NOT LIKE ABOUT THIS BOOK. Nothing.”
So, yeah, they recommend it.
Miss Jane Fairfield can’t do anything right. When she’s in company, she always says the wrong thing—and rather too much of it. No matter how costly they are, her gowns fall on the unfortunate side of fashion. Even her immense dowry can’t save her from being an object of derision.
And that’s precisely what she wants. She’ll do anything, even risk humiliation, if it means she can stay unmarried and keep her sister safe.
Mr. Oliver Marshall has to do everything right. He’s the bastard son of a duke, raised in humble circumstances—and he intends to give voice and power to the common people. If he makes one false step, he’ll never get the chance to accomplish anything. He doesn’t need to come to the rescue of the wrong woman. He certainly doesn’t need to fall in love with her. But there’s something about the lovely, courageous Jane that he can’t resist…even though it could mean the ruin of them both.

When the Duke was Wicked by Lorraine Heath is $1.99 right now. This is the first book in the Scandalous Gentlemen of St. James series, and has a 3.9-star average on GR. Heath has been referred to by both Sarah MacLean and Jessie Edwards, L’AwesomePublicist at Avon, as one of the most underrated stars of historical romance.
This story features a young heiress who is having difficulties telling real emotions from false when approached by suitors, and a man she has known since she was a child, who is now a duke. He’s got a matched set of wrenching emotional baggage including a train case and the matching rolling cart, and has no plans to ever get involved with anyone again. She has secret pains, too, so the surface plot reveals a lot more as the book continues.
When this book was last on sale, Pooks said she loves this whole series, as the heroes were all raised by Fagin from Oliver Twist.
They are England’s most eligible bachelors, with the most scandalous reputations. But for the right woman, even an unrepentant rogue may mend his ways…
Lady Grace Mabry’s ample inheritance has made it impossible for her to tell whether a suitor is in love with her—or enamored of her riches. Who better to distinguish beau from blackguard than her notorious childhood friend, the Duke of Lovingdon?
With no interest in marriage, Lovingdon has long lived only for pleasure. He sees little harm in helping Grace find a proper match. After all, he’s familiar with all the ploys a scoundrel uses to gain a woman’s favor. He simply has to teach the lovely innocent how to distinguish honest emotions from false ones. How better than by demonstrating his wicked ways. But as lessons lead to torrid passion and Grace becomes ensnared in another man’s marriage plot, Lovingdon must wage a desperate gamble: Open his heart fully—or risk losing the woman he adores…

A boxed set of three Jill Mansell novels is on sale for $1.99 – and that is a terrific deal since her books are usually $7+ each! This boxed set includes An Offer You Can’t Refuse, Staying at Daisy’s and Millie’s Fling.
I really like Mansell’s books, as they’re a lovely blend of comedy and emotion, and they take place in different and unique locations in England. Many readers call them comfort reads, and they very much are. I read Millie’s Fling and gave it a B in my review, writing, “[O]h, the comfort. Like sinking into the softest warmest cushions with blankets and snacks and absolutely no reason to keep track of what time it was, plus fuzzy slippers. I very much enjoyed myself.”
An Offer You Can’t Refuse
What’s a girl to do with… An offer you can’t refuse?
Nothing could tear Lola and Dougie apart, except his mother… Seventeen-year-old Lola has no intention of accepting when her boyfriend’s snobbish mother offers her a huge bribe to break up with him. Then Lola discovers a secret that makes her think again, and the only way she can help one of the people she loves most in the world is to take the money and break Dougie’s heart.
Ten years later, when Lola meets Dougie again, her feelings for him are as strong as ever. She’ll do almost anything to get him back, but she can never tell him the truth. Can she overcome his bitterness and win his heart? She’s attractive, persuasive, and endlessly optimistic, but even Lola’s got her work cut out for her this time.
Millie’s Fling
When Millie saves bestselling novelist Orla Hart’s life and loses her boyfriend in the process, one wonders if the rest of the book can be as entertaining and eventful as this dramatic opening but for Millie Brady the fun has only just begun
Millie decides that a man-free summer is just what she needs but Orla, who wants Millie to be the heroine of her next novel, is determined to find her the man of her dreams. As far as Millie is concerned, the only man worth thinking about is Hugh Emerson but for Hugh, whose wife tragically died in a horse-riding accident, “dating is not on the agenda”. Millie’s determination not to fall in love with the young widower forms the centrepiece of the novel but Jill Mansell also delves into the shenanigans of Millie’s best friend Hester and her eventful love life; Orla and her cheating husband; Millie’s man-eating mother; and the leather-clad, sex-mad Lucas Kemp who runs a kiss-a-gram service.
Staying at Daisy’s
If you’re looking for a hotel where anything can happen, try staying at Daisy’s…
Daisy MacLean runs the country house hotel owned by her flamboyant father, Hector. When she hears who’s about to get married there, she isn’t worried at all – her friend Tara absolutely promises there won’t be any trouble between her and ex-boyfriend Dominic, whom she hasn’t seen for years. But Daisy should be worried. Dominic has other ideas. And seeing Tara again sets in motion a chaotic train of events with far-reaching consequences for all concerned.
While Daisy spends the ensuing months doing battle with Dev Tyzack (Dominic’s so-called best man), Tara battles with her conscience. Meanwhile, Hector’s getting up to all sorts with…well, that’s the village’s best kept secret. And then Barney turns up, with a little something belonging to the husband Daisy’s been doing her best to forget. That’s the thing about hotels, you never know who you’re going to meet. Or whether they’re going to stay…

The Heiress Effect is my favourite book in the series 🙂
Rosie’s recipes are completely wonderful.
And don’t miss the fact that Courtney Milan’s The Duchess War (The Brothers Sinister Book 1) is still free.
I haven’t had a chance to read The Heiress Effect yet, so I’m super pumped this one is on sale. I picked it up today and will be giving it a go as soon as I have a few free minutes. Love me some Courtney Milan, and I’m sure this one will live up to the hype!
The Heiress Effect is PERFECT and I love it so hard that I compare all other historicals, even Milan’s others, to it. It is, to me, the best of the best. Total catnip, whipsmart, funny, sexy, believable. Also love the heck out of the subplot with the younger sister.
Yep. The Heiress Effect is a gem. The Duchess War (and The Governess Affair) are very good and well worth reading, but Heiress is even better. I haven’t yet been able to read the two books in the series after Heiress, for fear they would HAVE to be a let down after such a good book.
Rosie has been a go-to winner in my kitchen for more than 20 years. HIGHLY recommended.
@DonnaMarie:
That’s excellent! Do you have a favorite or a few favorites that you make all the time?
The Duchess War by Courtney Milan is free currently and a terrific read.
So, I got the Lorraine Heath book. 24 hours later, I had finished 3 of her books, gotten 3 hours of sleep, was working on a fourth book, and had purchased a fifth. There are some tropes, I won’t lie. But they’re written in a way that makes them very enjoyable to read.
