99c Sales in Four Different Romance Genres

  • Blamed

    Blamed by Edie Harris

RECOMMENDED: Blamed by Edie Harris is 99c! And I can honestly say that it’s worth the damn dollar. I’d even pay five whole dollars for this. Maybe more. This is a romantic suspense and I read the book late last year, giving it an A:

It truly is a beautifully written book. It’s emotional and engaging and truly exemplifies what I want in my romantic suspenses.

Born into a long line of spies, sanctioned killers and covert weapons developers, Beth Faraday carried out her first hit-for-hire when she was still a teenager.

That part of her life—the American spy royalty part—ended one year ago, with a job gone wrong in Afghanistan. The collateral damage she caused with a single shot was unfathomable and, for Beth, unforgivable. She’s worked hard to build a new life for herself, far away from the family business.

But someone, somewhere, hasn’t forgotten what Beth did in Kabul. And they want revenge.

As the Faraday clan bands together to defend Beth and protect their legacy, Beth is forced to flee her new home with the unlikeliest of allies—MI6 agent Raleigh Vick, the only man she’s ever loved. And the one she thought she’d killed in the desert.

  • Intrusion

    Intrusion by Charlotte Stein

Intrusion by Charlotte Stein is 99c! This book seems like a hodgepodge of genres. There’s some contemporary action, some romantic suspense, and a several erotic undertones. Sarah and Elyse did a joint review of the book and ultimately gave it a C:

Elyse: I really loved the moody, scary atmosphere of this book, and I loved the exploration of the troubled detective as a hero, but I thought it was a little lacking in execution. I’d give it a B-.

Sarah: I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the psychological thriller/erotica mix of the first 2/3rds, and to be honest, the switch in tone, genre, and antagonist in the ending completely collapsed my enjoyment of this book. I’d give it a hard C-, so let’s average our two grades to a C.

I believed I would never be able to trust any man again. That kindness was only for fools and would lead me down that same terrible path into darkness. I thought so with every fiber of my being—and then I met Noah Gideon Grant.

Everyone says he’s dangerous. He never comes out of his house—a place that looks like it could be featured in Serial Killers Monthly. But the thing is … I think something happened to him too. I know the chemistry between us isn’t just in my head. I know he feels it, but he’s holding back. The pleasure he gives me is unreal—if only I could give something in return. If only he would let me in. I think I can make him feel something good. And for the first time in forever, I want to.

He’s made a labyrinth of himself. Now all I need to do is dare to find my way through.

  • Once Upon a Kiss

Once Upon a Kiss by Tanya Anne Crosby

Once Upon a Kiss by Tanya Anne Crosby is 99c! This is a medieval romance and I’m not entirely sure if it’s set in a real, historical place. Regardless, I’m digging the cover. This has an arranged marriage trope, though the heroine isn’t betrothed to the hero. In fact, the hero is her betrothed’s brother. SCANDALOUS! Readers definitely recommend the the audiobook and they enjoyed some of the surprises in the plot (not giving away any spoilers!). However, some found the book to be just okay. It has a 3.7-star rating on GoodReads.

She came to wed his brother and stole the Dragon’s heart…

To settle a feud, Dominique Beauchamp was resigned to wed in order to heal their injured lands. Offered in marriage by her brother to the lord of Drakewich, she came to take the d’Lucy name … but never counted on losing her heart to the brother of her betrothed–the Black Dragon.

Blaec d’Lucy mistrusted her from the beginning, believing her to be part of her brother’s endless perfidy, but he was powerless to resist the fiery-haired vixen that rode so proudly into their midst. Their love was sealed … once upon a kiss.

  • Wanted: Wife

    Wanted: Wife by Gwen Jones

Wanted: Wife by Gwen Jones is 99c! This is a contemporary romance and the first book in the French Kiss series. The heroine is a reporter sent to cover a story about a man who put out an ad for a wife. Many reviewers on GoodReads found this to be a surprising, fun read with a witty heroine. However, a few readers seem to gripe about the deceptiveness of the cover, commenting that it’s not as fluffy as it seems. Has anyone read this one?

Andy Devine is advertising for a wife on a utility pole, and interviewing him is the last thing TV reporter Julie Knott needs. Especially after her cheating fiancé just tweeted their disengagement. Now she has got to choose: get the story — or become it?

Huh, that “Once Upon a Kiss” seemed oddly familiar: then I realized it was one of the advertisement pictures from the very awesome Armstreet, for their dress+bodice “Lady Hunter” (you can see the original in:

    http://armstreet.com/store/medieval-clothing/medieval-black-cotton-dress-with-bodice-vest-lady-hunter

It does make me wonder if they had secured proper permission to use the photo.

  4. Andrea D says:

Whenever I see the cover of Intrusion, I always think of The Pirate’s Secret Baby. I’m pretty sure it’s the same cover model, and he’s looking directly at the camera in both pictures, and that title really sticks in my mind. So, I’m like, why is that pirate dressed in a suit?

  5. Kareni says:

I read Wanted: Wife some time ago, but it left me feeling rather ho hum. Blamed sounds intriguing. I did enjoy Intrusion.

  6. Lauren says:

Just bought the Edie Harris, it’s been on my tbr since its review. The rest don’t really seem like my cup of tea

  7. Patricia says:

“Once Upon A Kiss” is free on Kobo Canada! Score!

  8. Liz says:

I bought Blamed based on the review and read it in a day (I needed to subsidize the book habit after all) … only to find out that it’s the first in the series. Needless to say , the book lived up to the review and I’m crossing my fingers that the sale means book 2 is being released soon. I wish I had something witty or insightful to say but its been a long day.

  9. Michelle says:

Many thanks for the Scribd link!

  10. Avellaneda says:

Read over a couple of days because of this recommendation. Personally, I liked it because I like spy stories. I also have a thing for smart, icy lawyers and so for me, this book had everything. Sometimes the heroine got on my nerves a little with the whole “boo-hoo, poor me”, but then she recognizes her self-pity shit for exactly what it was, and I found that refreshing. Cannot wait until the next book comes out. Edie Harris is on my auto-read list. Highly recommend.

  11. Susan says:

@Andrea D: The Pirate’s Secret Baby cover model reminded me of the guy who played Matthew Crawley on Downton Abbey (but w/ darker hair),

I don’t usually pay too much attention to covers, but the the Intrusion cover really bothered me when I first saw it in February. The guy just looked unkempt and off (for lack of a better word). Then I read the blurb about his house looking like a place from Serial Killers Monthly and I thought how perfect that was. He looks like someone who kills for fun and profit. So I bought it.

  12. KatieF says:

I didn’t love the Edie Harris. When I saw it was on sale I snapped it up because I remembered the general good book noise around it but none of the specifics. I didn’t realize there were going to be graphic torture scenes (one at the very beginning on the book). Also, among other problems, I thought the hero wasn’t very bright, her brothers too forgiving of him, and the heroine seemed to be having a major breakdown.

I loved the heroine’s brother, Tobias, so was looking forward to reading about him in Book 2. But then I read the teaser for the book and saw who the heroine was going to be. The author is going to have to work pretty hard to redeem her as a character and I don’t have enough trust in Harris yet to believe she’s going to be able to do it.

  13. KristieJ says:

Well dang! The one I wanted the most – Wanted: Wife is going for $3.00 here which means on the principal that they are charging $2 more for it – I won’t be getting it 🙁

  14. Demi says:

I almost picked up the Edie Harris but the comments on the torture scene turned me away…I did read another of Harris’s books though that was really enjoyable – a contemporary called “Stripped.” Sexy Irish actor hero!

Had to pick up “Once Upon a Kiss” though, yay! I haven’t heard of the author before but the sample was great and the description looks like some fantastic reading catnip.

  15. Paula says:

I started reading Wanted:Wife and really wanted to like the book. The writing is well done and the story line hooked me: hot sexy guy advertising for wife to live on farm and have his babies. As a lifelong suburban Philly girl, I welcomed the references to the Melrose Diner and the Jersey Pine Barrens, since Philly seldom figures as the setting in romances novels. However, I just couldn’t get past some stuff: the TV reporter heroine agrees to marry the gorgeous stranger on a few days’ acquaintance without looking into his background a little bit? She has a lawyer look into the marriage contract but doesn’t have a lawyer sue the ex-fiancee who froze her bank account? She goes to live on a farm in the middle of nowhere without cell service and doesn’t bring jeans? In fairness, I am a lawyer and old enough to be the mother of the main characters, so I tend to spot these kinds of things. I intend to keep reading because I’m curious how the characters will work out, but I have to keep putting it down after a chapter or two to give my inquiring mind a rest.

  16. Paula says:

Re: my previous comment on Wanted: Wife. I finished the book last night and I’d give it a B. It is beautifully written and the story has episodes reminiscent of Kristin Higgins. The heroine’s appeal grew as I delved further into the book. There’s even a Lady Catherine DeBourgh moment. It’s a very interesting take on the marriage first-love later trope.
