Lucien’s Fall

RECOMMENDED: Lucien’s Fall by Barbara Samuel is .99 at Amazon and BN. This is something of an historical romance classic. I read and reviewed this book in 2006 and gave it a B+, saying:
“after a week of thinking on it and writing down all the things that frustrated me, I realized that what bugged me was precisely what made the book good. And not “good” in the sense of, “Oh, it wasn’t so bad in comparison to some things I’ve read.” It was good in the sense that the author took risks and made real characters so that instead of villains that were cardboard and easily dismissed, I had secondary characters, fully-developed foils for the protagonists, and actions that were disruptive to the progress towards a happy ending, but that were driven by understandable motivation, not simple evil. It was so good, in fact, that the grade was elevated after rumination to a B+.
….I’m much better a romance reader for having read this story. “
A SINFULLY APPEALING RAKE

RECOMMENDED: What I Did For a Duke by Julie Anne Long is $1.99 pretty much everywhere, and if you like historical romance you should buy this RIGHT NOW because it is TERRIFIC.
This book was a Sizzling Book Club pick in October 2012, and you can read the chat transcript if you’d like (but read the book first in case of spoilers). This romance is charming, funny, and delicious, and is a reader favorite. So grab it while it’s $2 and treat yourself.
For years, he’s been an object of fear, fascination . . . and fantasy. But of all the wicked rumors that shadow the formidable Alexander Moncrieffe, Duke of Falconbridge, the ton knows one thing for certain: only fools dare cross him. And when Ian Eversea does just that, Moncrieffe knows the perfect revenge: he’ll seduce Ian’s innocent sister, Genevieve—the only Eversea as yet untouched by scandal. First he’ll capture her heart . . . and then he’ll break it.
But everything about Genevieve is unexpected: the passion simmering beneath her cool control, the sharp wit tempered by gentleness . . . And though Genevieve has heard the whispers about the duke’s dark past, and knows she trifles with him at her peril, one incendiary kiss tempts her deeper into a world of extraordinary sensuality. Until Genevieve is faced with a fateful choice . . . is there anything she won’t do for a duke?

RECOMMENDED: Love and Other Scandals by Caroline Linden is $.99 right now. This is book 1 in the Scandalous series, which is described on GoodReads thusly: “A series in which a shocking book—Fifty Shades of Grey for the Regency era—has all of London talking and gives more than one young miss a mind for scandal.”
This book has a 3.8-star average and was nominated for a RITA®. Our three RITA® Reader Challenge reviewers gave this book an A, a B+ and an A respectively.
With Love and Other Scandals, bestselling and RITA Award–winning author Caroline Linden launches a scandalously sexy new historical romance series set in Regency England.
Joan Bennett is a breath away from being a spinster. She’s had four seasons without a suitor. After reading a shockingly sensuous book, Fifty Ways to Sin, Joan decides perhaps it’s time to stop being proper and start being sinful, while she’s still young enough to enjoy it. And what better partner than her brother’s drinking mate, Viscount Burke? He seems the type to know how to give a lady a lascivious adventure.
It seems that the viscount has qualms about trifling with a friend’s sister. That’s the way to end up betrothed. And he doesn’t want that—or does he?

It Takes a Scandal by Caroline Linden is $1.99. This is book two in the Scandalous series, and it has a 3.74-star average on GoodReads. Readers particularly liked that the heroine in this book has a loving home life with caring parents and a close relationship with her sister, and that they are not of the nobility. Many readers also loved the beta hero, Sebastian. So if you’d like to start a new series, books 1 and 2 are on sale for less than $4, give or take some taxes and/or geographic restrictions.
Sometimes It Takes a Scandal…
Abigail Weston has everything: beauty, wit, and one of the largest dowries in England. Her parents hope she’ll wed an earl. Abigail hopes for a man who wants her desperately and passionately. But the money seems to blind every man she meets—except one.
Sebastian Vane has nothing. He came home from war with a shattered leg to find his father mad and his inheritance gone. He’s not a fit suitor for anyone, let alone an heiress. But Abigail lights up his world like a comet, bright and beautiful and able to see him instead of his ruined reputation. And it might end happily ever after…
To Reveal Your Heart’s Desire
…Until Benedict Lennox begins courting Abigail. Ben is everything Sebastian isn’t—wealthy, charming, heir to an earl. Sebastian won’t give up the only girl he’s ever loved without a fight, but Abigail must choose between the penniless gentleman who moves her heart, and the suitor who is everything her parents want.

You guys are so bad for my wallet, let alone my TBR pile!
Thank you as always for bringing new authors I haven’t found before to light. All four of these books are what….$7.00 which is cheaper than a movie ticket. I am saying a serious thanks for the next four days of reading leasure.
The Amazon link to the Julie Ann Long book doesn’t seem to be working. Thx for the heads up!
Ah yes, but $7 here & $7 there and… , never mind. Amazon, shut up & take my money!
I love Julie Ann Long. I love the Pennyroyal Green series. But I really can’t abide “What I Did For a Duke”. Yes, it’s VERY well written. The hero is interesting, albeit quite self centered for a good bit of the book. But I thought the heroine was dumber than a box of rocks. Her whole original reason for getting together with the titular Duke was part of a scheme to attract another guy, and there is no Victorian universe in which said scheme makes any sense at all. I would normally feel bad for a young heroine manipulated by the “hero”, but she practically wears a sign saying “take advantage of me”.
OMG. So many great books on sale today! I use the “self control” app to block Amazon during dedicated dissertation writing hours. The app It blocks any website that is a serious distraction and threat of falling into an internet K-hole. After reading this, I’m now spending my last 5 minutes of writing time desperately refreshing Amazon so I can pick these up!
What I Did for a Duke is amazing. It was the first Julie Ann Long book I read, and it instantly put her on my auto-buy list. I actually kind of want to go reread it now, but I’m in the middle of It Takes a Scandal, so maybe later.
@Michelle – fixed! Thanks!
I seldom buy books anymore, the library is a wonderful resource to find all of these. I usually don’t read a book more than once anyway, so there’s no point in spending a lot of money on them, but I do appreciate the recommendations here for what to put on hold. I just picked up “Lucien’s Fall” and can’t wait to dive into it.
