  • Next of Kin

Next of Kin by Sharon Sala

Next of Kin by Sharon Sala is $2.99! This romantic suspense is book one in the Rebel Ridge series. The heroine is in the witness protection program, but after being discovered by the people from which she’s supposed to be hiding, she heads home to backwoods of Kentucky for safety. Many readers caution that it’s heavy on the suspense and a little lighter on the romance, but others loved the fact that the hero & heroine were childhood sweethearts, which I’m sure is catnip for some. It has a 3.9-star rating on GoodReads.

Beth Venable has seen too much. Witness to a major mob hit, she’s placed in protective custody until the trial. But after her third safe house is riddled with bullets, she goes off-grid to save herself. What the FBI can’t do, her kinfolk will.

The beautiful but forbidding Appalachian Mountains of Kentucky welcome Beth back, dirt roads and rustic shacks a world apart from L.A. But her homecoming—even her blissful reunion with strong, silent Ryal Walker—is made bittersweet by the fight she’s brought to the clan’s doorstep. Hidden in a remote cabin with the man she’s always wanted, Beth begins to dream of a new life: her old one. But after so long, with such dangers stalking her…impossible.

But love can distill life down to its essence: an elixir of pure hope, nerve—and the will to survive.

  • Total Surrender

    Total Surrender by Rebecca Zanetti

Total Surrender by Rebecca Zanetti is on preorder for $2.99! This book isn’t scheduled to publish until March 31st and is the fourth book in her Sin Brothers series. The series is mainly romantic suspense with a few paranormal components thrown in just to spice things up. Since the book isn’t out yet, there aren’t many comments on it, but are there any fans of the series in the Bitchery?

    A fight he must win . . .

Piper Oliver knows she can’t trust him. They warned her that the tall, dark, and sexy black-ops soldier Jory Dean would try to win her over with his steel-gray eyes and deadly charm, but she won’t be conned by this man they call a traitor. All she has to do is figure out the science necessary to save his life, and she’s done. Something isn’t adding up, though, and she won’t rest until she uncovers the truth-even if it’s buried in his deep, dangerous kiss.

But with every second bringing him closer to certain death, can he afford to lose himself in her hot and willing embrace?

  • Shattered Secrets

    Shattered Secrets by Karen Harper

Shattered Secrets by Karen Harper is $1.99! This is the first book in her Cold Creek series. This is a romantic suspense/mystery set in a small town. Trigger warning: The heroine is abducted as a child, though she is unable to remember it. I’m sure it comes back during the course of the book. There seems to be a bit of a divide on the book. Some readers thought the book started off strong and dipped off from there, while others said they needed to get through a few chapters before their interest really kicked in. Has anyone read this book?

    Every town has its secrets…

Returning to Cold Creek, Ohio, is an act of courage for Tess Lockwood. Abducted and held captive as a young girl, she is unable to remember anything about the crime that destroyed her childhood and tore her family apart. Now a grown woman with a bright future, she is certain she has put the past behind her. But when she inherits the family home, Tess must confront the demons that still haunt her and the town of Cold Creek.

Gabe McCord has always blamed himself for what happened to Tess. He had been a teenager when she was snatched from the group of children he was responsible for watching. Now Gabe has taken on the role of sheriff and hopes to shed new light on the cold case, especially given his growing feelings for Tess.

Tess isn’t ready to recall what happened to her, and she has no intention of digging up any details that might remind her of the truth. But when another child in the town goes missing, she’s certain it’s related to her return to Cold Creek. Together,Tess and Gabe will have to work to unlock their painful memories in order to save another child and heal their damaged souls, for good….

  • The Arrangement

    The Arrangement by Bethany-Kris

The Arrangement by Bethany-Kris is 99c! This is the first book in the Russian Guns series and seems more like a contemporary romance with elements of suspense featuring an arranged mob marriage. Some readers felt the romance was too quick, too soon, but the mob setting was an interesting aspect to the romance. It has a 3.9-star rating on GoodReads.

Nothing will stop the Bratva mob boss from taking back what’s his, and once he has her, he’ll do anything to keep her…

Viviana “Vine” Carducci’s and Anton Avdonin’s marriage was decided more than two decades ago. The deal between leading mafia families has more on the line than anyone knew, even if the Bratva and Cosa Nostra shouldn’t mix. When Vine’s family is murdered and she’s left with nothing more than her grief to survive the mob world alone, she believes the arrangement won’t see the light of day.

Anton can’t allow the one woman he was supposed to love get away. At the possibility of her death, he steps in to save her with guns blazing, knowing exactly what it might cost him: everything. But it’s been nearly a decade since their last meeting, and he can’t help but wonder if the woman he took back is the same girl he fell for all those years before.

Protected and loved, Vine is unable to forget their shared moments a lifetime ago, or the future she knows they’re owed. When an old flame of Anton’s shows up to rip the veil off the carefully constructed secrets he’d been hiding, she learns that nothing about her life is as it seems. But, that’s nothing compared to the bomb about to blow. Can Vine see beyond the pain and blood to take what she always wanted? And just how far will the mob prince go to keep her safe?

In a world where violence, deceit, and greed reign, your life is not your own, and sometimes, love has to be arranged.

  1. I’ve read the other books in Zanetti’s Sin Brothers series. It’s about genetically created/altered “super soldiers” and there’s an on-going arc as the brothers escape, find the women they love, look for their other brother, and try to take down the rogue military operation that made them. TOTAL SURRENDER is the lost brother’s book. The series is catnip for me and I really suggest reading them in order rather than jumping into this one. Readers need the background, IMO. That said, I’ll be rereading all of them before this release because I enjoyed them and want that foundation for the new one. 😀

  2. Lisa J says:

Ditto with everything Silver said. I really enjoy this series and can’t wait for this book. I would love to see more books set in this world.

I will also be rereading them all before this release.

  3. Margarita says:

The coupon works outside of the US! Yipeeee!

  4. Kejo says:

I’m clearly the odd one because I couldn’t get through the first book in the Sin Brothers series. I thought it was eye rolling unbelievable. I could not suspend disbelieve that much to even finish it. I didn’t like it and was glad it was just a library loan. To each his own.

  5. Jen says:

Another huge Sin brothers fan here! @Kejo, the first book is the weakest IMO. That brother is an asshat. The other brothers aren’t as bad–still bossy alphas, but a little more likable. I’d recommend reading the second and see if you like it any better. And I definitely agree with Silver that you should read them in order. Part of what hooked me on the series is this building tension that the brothers are going to be killed. You have to see each one fall in love, because that way the stakes get higher and higher in each book. You want them all to get their HEAs!

On the other hand, I did not like the Karen Harper book. I see so many great reviews for it but I thought it was awkward, with little character development and weird pacing. The mystery was fine I guess, but the romance was just totally lackluster.

  6. Coco says:

I’m not at all sure what this means but I too found these books (yep, read ’em all) eye-rollingly unbelievable but I still liked them. And I’ll be reading this one too.

More than the genetically altered weirdness, I found the word choice to be very distracting. This author uses words that are either awkward or just senseless at times. To the point that I don’t know what she meant to say and can’t figure it out from the context.

On the other hand, when I wasn’t being confounded by weird wording, I liked her characters and the ridiculousness of how fast it all went. I’m always amused by the “I’m rough and tough and no woman will ever catch me, oh wait I think I’m in love!” I especially love it in triplicate! The whole series happens in a couple of months.

I read it as scifi/fantasy and I can cope. It’d really make me crazy if I tried to read it as reality.

  7. Jen says:

I second what Coco said about things being unbelievable…but still I kept reading! When I was reading the first I kept thinking “This is ridiculous. I’ll just read a little more before I stop.” A few hours later I had devoured the whole thing, haha.

  8. Michelle says:

I loved the Zanetti Sin Brothers and can’t wait for this book. Will be re-reading the first three

  9. Heather says:

I guess I’ve never figured out what people like so much in the Sharon Sala book. I hated it. The heroine was strong in like the first couple chapters and then is so weak, don’t even remember the hero

    Heather

  10. Coco says:

I think I continue to read Sala out of nostalgia. That isn’t to say I hate her newer books but they are kinda cookie cutter. I like the next trilogy better (Forces of Nature) with a single baddy through all three.

Her Cat Dupree novels are SO good. And many of her stand alone titles are very good.

This wasn’t her best but I read all of her work.

  11. Coco says:

I can’t stand it anymore! That man looks like he’s wearing two pairs of pants.

Sometimes no pants is not enough pants but two pairs is always a no go. One pair. That’s all the pants you need.

  12. Becky says:

I didn’t read this Karen Harper book, but I tried to read the third one (Broken Bonds) to review for its recent release and had to DNF around 40%. I had a lot of the same issues with it that Jen mentioned above for book one. I would have stopped earlier, but I really try to finish the books I’m signed up to review–I finally threw in the towel when I realized I was going to be hard pressed to say anything even remotely positive about it in my review.

  13. Nicole says:

Never read this, but it was quite heavily promoted at BEA and has a lovely cover. For 99 cents, might be a good buy for a younger reader looking for a new series: http://www.amazon.com/Waterfire-Saga-Book-One-Deep-ebook/dp/B00HZTXPEW/ref=pd_ys_ir_kstore_37

  14. annieofcleves says:

I CANNOT WAIT for Zanetti’s Total Surrender – have been looking forward to this book the whole year. The Sin Brothers series is an updated Dark Angel (2000 tv series) for the Romantic Suspense crowd. Remember how Jessica Alba!Max had, like, Zac and Ben and Tinga and Brin and the rest of her squad? Those are the Sin Brothers.

To echo an earlier poster, I do recommend reading the other novels first (in order). More and more is revealed about who they are and their situation (Manticore!), as I believe Jory’s story is more or less the final chapter in the saga.

… I say I’ve been waiting for this book for the better part of a year, but I really have been waiting for this series since Dark Angel went off the rails air in 2002.
