Bridget Jones and a Variety of YA

  • Bridget Jones’s Diary

Bridget Jones’s Diary by Helen Fielding

RECOMMENDED: Bridget Jones’s Diary by Helen Fielding is $1.99 right now. I remember reading this book and cry-laughing. I like first-person diary format stories in general (also I just typed “dairy” format – not sure what that is) but this is one I re-read every so often, and laugh just as hard every time.

Bridget Jones’s Diary is the devastatingly self-aware, laugh-out-loud account of a year in the life of a thirty-something Singleton on a permanent doomed quest for self-improvement. Caught between the joys of Singleton fun, and the fear of dying alone and being found three weeks later half eaten by an Alsatian; tortured by Smug Married friends asking, “How’s your love life?” with lascivious, yet patronizing leers, Bridget resolves to: reduce the circumference of each thigh by 1.5 inches, visit the gym three times a week not just to buy a sandwich, form a functional relationship with a responsible adult and learn to program the VCR. With a blend of flighty charm, existential gloom, and endearing self-deprecation, Bridget Jones’s Diary has touched a raw nerve with millions of readers the world round. Read it and laugh—before you cry, “Bridget Jones is me!”

  • Say What You Will

Say What You Will by Cammie McGovern

Say What You Will by Cammie McGovern is $1.99 at Amazon, iBooks, and Google:Play. This is a teen YA (grade 9 and up) novel about Amy, a young woman with cerebral palsy who hires student aides her senior year and gets to know Matthew, a boy with OCD. It has a 3.8-star average on GR.

A mild warning (I debated about adding this but decided that I’d want someone to give me the heads up if I were considering this book): despite being tagged as a romance, it is not. There’s a great connection between Amy and Matthew, but don’t go in expecting a romance all the way through, k?

Born with cerebral palsy, Amy can’t walk without a walker, talk without a voice box, or even fully control her facial expressions. Plagued by obsessive-compulsive disorder, Matthew is consumed with repeated thoughts, neurotic rituals, and crippling fear. Both in desperate need of someone to help them reach out to the world, Amy and Matthew are more alike than either ever realized.

When Amy decides to hire student aides to help her in her senior year at Coral Hills High School, these two teens are thrust into each other’s lives. As they begin to spend time with each other, what started as a blossoming friendship eventually grows into something neither expected.

What was once the western United States is now home to the Republic, a nation perpetually at war with its neighbors. Born into an elite family in one of the Republic’s wealthiest districts, fifteen-year-old June is a prodigy being groomed for success in the Republic’s highest military circles. Born into the slums, fifteen-year-old Day is the country’s most wanted criminal. But his motives may not be as malicious as they seem.

From very different worlds, June and Day have no reason to cross paths – until the day June’s brother, Metias, is murdered and Day becomes the prime suspect. Caught in the ultimate game of cat and mouse, Day is in a race for his family’s survival, while June seeks to avenge Metias’s death. But in a shocking turn of events, the two uncover the truth of what has really brought them together, and the sinister lengths their country will go to keep its secrets.

Full of nonstop action, suspense, and romance, this novel is sure to move readers as much as it thrills.

  • Open Road Summer

Open Road Summer by Emery Lord

Open Road Summer by Emery Lord is $2.99 right now. This is a contemporary teen romance about a girl, Reagan, who is the best friend of a country music superstar named Lilah. To escape a bad breakup and crap home life, she heads out on tour with her friend for the summer.

This book has a ton of positive reviews behind it and a 3.9-star average on GoodReads. Readers who liked it mentioned the real, honest, and emotionally powerful friendship between Reagan and Lilah in their reviews. I’m so curious about this book – have you read it?

After breaking up with her bad-news boyfriend, Reagan O’Neill is ready to leave her rebellious ways behind. . . and her best friend, country superstar Lilah Montgomery, is nursing a broken heart of her own.

Fortunately, Lilah’s 24-city tour is about to kick off, offering a perfect opportunity for a girls-only summer of break-up ballads and healing hearts. But when Matt Finch joins the tour as its opening act, his boy-next-door charm proves difficult for Reagan to resist, despite her vow to live a drama-free existence.

This summer, Reagan and Lilah will navigate the ups and downs of fame and friendship as they come to see that giving your heart to the right person is always a risk worth taking. A fresh new voice in contemporary romance, Emery Lord’s gorgeous writing hits all the right notes.

    🙂 Ahh, Bridget Jones!

LOVED Open Road Summer. I went to an event at Books of Wonder in NYC that featured its author, Emery Lord. I highly recommend the book!

  3. John says:

SAY WHAT YOU WILL is probably one of the worst books I’ve read in ages. It’s a terrible take on disability and romance in my opinion. It does have a romantic ending (I think?) but it takes a long time to get there and the romance is based on a lot of ableist ideas.

Here’s my (overly long and ranty) review for better context: http://dreaminginbooks.blogspot.com/2014/06/reviewrant-say-what-you-will-by-cammie.html

  4. Open Road Summer is a great read! Highly recommend. Legend is a good series too, and I’m really picky about dystopian YA.

    @John:

Thank you for the link! I was waffling about posting that sale because it seemed from some of the GR reviews I read that there might be some really bothersome characterizations, but I was reading between the lines and reading tags more than anything. I should have Googled for your review. Thank you.

And I did buy Open Road Summer and gifted it to a friend – so yay – thank you for the recommendations @Maybeimamazed02 and @Stephanie.

  6. Sarah says:

Open Road Summer is a really solid YA with a memorable romance and a really great friendship story. It’s got a surly lead, which is totally my cup of tea, but I know isn’t for everyone.

  7. I remember loving Bridget Jones’s Diary fifteen years ago. I’m curious how it holds up. The world has changed a lot since it was written, and I’ve changed a lot since I read it.

  8. Holly Bush says:

Bridget Jones Dairy is one of the few books I’ve listened to as an audio book and it was quite a while ago. I listened to it as I drove from one side of Pennsylvania to the other and vividly remember the strange looks I got from truckers because I was laughing so hard. I had to make considerable more stops to pee than I normally would have, too. Like Rachel, I wonder if it held up over time although Sarah says she’s reread it and laughed just as hard. Hmmm.

  9. I love Bridget Jones’s Diary. It’s the book I read in the middle of the night when I can’t sleep. I just flip to a random page and read a couple entries. The second one isn’t bad either, but I refuse to read the third one after learning what happened to Mark Darcy…

  10. kkw says:

I thought Bridget Jones was a pretty brilliant P&P update, and as a rule I don’t like adaptations or ‘sequels’ or alternate reality versions. No idea if it holds up, and it has certainly been a while.
