  1. Margaret Ethridge says:

I’m listening to an audiobook now (would rather not name) that everyone has been raving about. The story is compelling, but the writing is awkward and disjointed. 1st person present, multiple POVs. I’m intrigued enough by the story to continue, but I can only listen in small doses.

  2. Kimberly W. says:

I wasn’t sure I was going to like the Selection when I read the review but I tried it anyways.

  3. Jaclyn M says:

One of the RITA Reader Challenge reviews, for Heart of Obsidian, I could not agree with. It wasn’t completely the opposite of my personal review of the book, and the reviewer definitely pointed out parts that I also found troubling, but overall I was left with a much more satisfied feeling, and the desire to reread this book repeatedly remains. It just reaffirms my opinion that I can’t look at just the book rating in a review – I read the review entirely to find out if the parts someone else didn’t like are actually exactly what I am in the mood to read!

  4. Sarah P says:

After Elyse raved about Edith Layton, I immediately bought two of her books, but I couldn’t finish either of them. So disappointing because Elyse was so enthusiastic!

  5. Amy R says:

I follow a few different blogs and have had this happen on more than one occasion the most recent was a book by Marie Harte a blogger loved and it was a DNF for me.

  6. margaret says:

A couple years ago now a journalist wrote a fiction book that was really quite awful. There were a whole bunch of reviews online praising it as the next best series … That series never happened, the ppb release never happened, it all dropped out of sight.

  7. Trix says:

LIFE OF PI had me expecting this transcendent experience, but it bored the living bejesus out of me (and I felt homicidal when I finally reached the ending after 100 chapters). I was also shocked that people find David Foster Wallace’s A SUPPOSEDLY FUN THING I’LL NEVER DO AGAIN funny…he seemed so bitter about everything he wrote about in it.

  8. Sarah says:

It happens so much that I can’t even think of a specific one. The biggest “they got it wrong” thing I can think of is the 1995 version of Sabrina. I love it but I don’t think I’ve ever read a positive review…

  9. Sherri says:

Night Broken by Patricia Briggs – The review on Dear Author meshed with my feelings about the book. It was interesting to me to see in the comments discussion about one aspect of the book with which I heartily disagreed. But the overall discussion was great.

  10. Jennifer O. says:

I can’t think of a specific one from your website, but I know I didn’t really like Gone Girl or Wild and everyone else seems to love them.

  11. Belle says:

Any of the SBTB reviews of Courtney Milan books are spot on for me.

  12. Laura says:

I love reading all the reviews on the website…I tend to agree with the majority of reviews

  13. Lori says:

I’ve had both situations happen, but a recent one is I have to say I disagreed on The Courtship of Princess Leia being a fun read. My husband gave it to me to read and between his talk up of it and the review here it should have been a slam dunk. Nope. I guess for me the stakes were too high and Han was just being too much of an ass for my liking. USE YOUR WORDS, HAN.

  14. Turophile says:

Yes – but I can’t remember which books. I usually wait to read reviews until after I’ve read though.

  15. flchen1 says:

I think many books provoke different responses from people–I know for instance that there are many rave reviews about the Twilight series, but I think I’d have a far different reaction when reading them. I just finished a book by a very popular author, and while I can admire her skill, the subject material is just not for me, and I know that greatly colored my response. I would have rated it generously a 3 while she regularly gets 5 star reviews…

  16. aileen says:

I read the synopsis and decide from there. I stopped reading review on Amazon a long time ago. When I discovered your blog, I found you were pretty much dead on with your reviews. I trust SBTB. Thanks for all the work you do!

  17. LindaL says:

I wasn’t sure about Lord of the Scoundrels even after reading the reviews…but I totally agree with the review…”so far the book is pretty much a big ol’ loaf of awesome smothered in a rich awesome sauce.”
