The Handmaid’s Tale, Recommended New Adult, and Rodeo Romance

  • The Handmaid’s Tale

The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood

The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood is one of the two Kindle Daily Deals today at $1.99. This month they’ve been featuring classics and editor’s picks. This is a much-loved and very-much-still-relevant dystopian fantasy in which the US has been replaced by the Republic of Gilead, and a handmaid whose job it is to become pregnant remembers her life before, when she had a husband, a daughter, and was permitted to read. This book was published over 30 years ago, but the story is still frighteningly prescient where women’s rights are concerned.

Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead. She may leave the home of the Commander and his wife once a day to walk to food markets whose signs are now pictures instead of words because women are no longer allowed to read. She must lie on her back once a month and pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, because in an age of declining births, Offred and the other Handmaids are valued only if their ovaries are viable. Offred can remember the years before, when she lived and made love with her husband, Luke; when she played with and protected her daughter; when she had a job, money of her own, and access to knowledge. But all of that is gone now…

  • The Year We Hid Away

The Year We Hid Away by Sarina Bowen

The Year We Hid Away by Sarina Bowen is 99c. This is book 2 in the Ivy Years series, and is a New Adult romance about a young woman escaping family scandal with a new name and a fresh start in college, and a hockey player who has to take on many family responsibilities, including deception. It has a 4+ star average, and readers who loved it especially loved the hero. They loooooved the hero, in fact. There are gifs to prove it.

She’s hiding something big. He’s hiding someone small.

Scarlet Crowley’s life was torn apart the day father was arrested for unspeakable crimes. Now the shock has worn off, but not the horror.

It’s a safe bet that Scarlet is the only first year at Harkness College who had to sneak past TV news trucks parked on her front lawn just to leave town. But college will be Scarlet’s fresh start. Clutching a shiny new student ID — with a newly minted name on it — she leaves it all behind. Even if it means lying to the boy she’s falling for.

Bridger McCaulley is a varsity hockey star known for being a player both on and off the ice. But a sobering family crisis takes that all away. Protecting his sister means a precarious living arrangement and constant deception. The only bright spot in his week is the few stolen hours he spends with Scarlet.

The two form a tentative relationship based on the understanding that some things must always be held back. But when grim developments threaten them both, going it alone just won’t work anymore. And if they can’t learn to trust one another now, the families who let them down will take everything they’ve struggled to keep.New Adult romance, including sexual situations. Suitable for ages 17+

  • The Cowboy and the Angel

The Cowboy and the Angel by T.J. Kline

The Cowboy and the Angel by TJ Kline is 99c right now. This is the second book in Kline’s rodeo series, and it has a 4+ star average. The heroine is struggling professionally and financially due to her alcoholic parent, and the hero is all grumpy and curmudgeonly, just the way many readers like.

    The Cowboy

Derek Chandler used to be all play and no work, but these days he has a rodeo to run and a chip on his shoulder. He’s made some mistakes in the past, and, in a family that prizes loyalty above all else, it’s time to prove that he’s a part of the team.

    The Angel

Angela McCallister is a reporter on a mission. She’s looking for the scoop of her career to replenish her savings and get her troubled father the help he desperately needs. But the story seems to have run dry, and her plans certainly didn’t include falling in love with a sexy, brooding cowboy who calls her Angel.

    Together

They must learn to trust one another. It’s hard for Angela to be her usual, guarded self around the close-knit family at the Findley Brothers ranch, and although Derek suspects his Angel is hunting for a story that could destroy his family, he can’t keep his hands off of her. Their connection is instant, but will the Cowboy and his Angel allow themselves to give in to passion?

I just came here from buying The Handmaid’s Tale. If you want the audio book too, its only $1.99 to add it. (No idea if its any good.)

  2. GHN says:

I love _The Handmaid’s Tale_. For values of love, that is – it’s not a cheerful book but it is magnificiently written.

  3. The Handmaid’s Tale is one of those books that has stuck with me for decades. “Don’t let the bastards grind you down.”

  4. Ceece says:

I read the Handmaid’s Tale when it first came out and I go back to it every few years. It’s a little depressing how the story has seemed timely through the decades. Seriously, if you’d asked me when I’d first read it I would have predicted that the book would seem very archaic within about ten years. Well, it hasn’t happened yet. Sigh. Still, very good book.

  5. Bea says:

@Longshadows. I purchased the audiobook too. It is narrated by Claire Danes, an actress I admire.

  6. Tam says:

@Ceece, I agree with you. I first read ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ in my early teens, when it seemed entirely far-fetched. In recent years, however, I’ve found myself wondering if the religious right here has been using it as a secret ‘how to’ manual.

  7. Algae says:

I bought both the book and the audio book – I’ve heard great things about this particular audio book and had it on my wish list.

I find The Handmaid’s Tale to be one of the most terrifying books I’ve ever read. Seriously, I get shivers just remembering some of the scenes.

  8. elaanfaun says:

The Handmaid’s Tale is one of my annual reads. I love that (disturbing) book.

  9. DonnaMarie says:

The Handmaid’s Tale is the reason it took years for me to agree to direct deposit or use a debit card. Anyone who thinks the premise is farfetched, hasn’t been paying attention. After nearly 30 years STILL THE SCARIEST BOOK EVER WRITTEN.
