This HaBO request is from Cassie, who is looking for a riverboat historical. Remember when they were everywhere?
Looking for book from 90’s. It had to do with a young women becoming the ward of a riverboat owner.
Man came from wealthy family. Girl was daughter of prostitute.
The book starts with man thinking he was going to have the young child as his ward. He goes to meet her on his ship where she had been put in his state room. He walks into the room with his then fiancee and finds a much older and tempting female instead of young child he assumed.
Drama, intrigue and love follow. Can’t remember name of book or author. Think some of it occurs in New Orleans and French Quarter in the later part of the book — as well as on the Mississippi River and on a plantation. Please help! Has been driving me crazy!
If we find this book, who is betting that the hero is depicted on the cover with a truly stellar mustache? Isn’t it law that riverboat historical romances have mustached heroes on the front?
And does anyone recognize this book?

It sounds like a Jennifer Wilde/Tom E. Huff novel, but I can’t put my finger on it. I’m certain, however, the Bitchery will rise to the challenge.
Hmm, couldn’t quite find anything that matches much, but same themes
“The Heart’s Haven” by Jill Barnett
“Alluring Adversary” by Marti Jones
Sounds like one of Lisa Kleypas’s earlier books . . . Only With Your Love?
None of the ones listed so far. 🙁
There’s was also I scene where the ward was pregnant, fell/tripped /pushed down a flight of stairs and lost the baby.
I feel like the wards last name was Devereaux. But not the authors name.
I looked at all of jude Devereaux books and it wasn’t one of hers.
It was a historical book but not England it was definitely riverboat on Mississippi River in new Orleans area.
This is driving me crazy! Please help!
Hi – gotta run off to work, so I don’t have time to do
any research right now, but let me throw these names out into the Smart Bitches ether:
1) Jennifer Blake does Mississippi River/Louisiana
riverboats a lot, and –
2) Thea Devine also did New Orleans a couple of times in her singularly twisted way; the tripping of a ward to induce miscarriage is right up her alley. The name “Deverill” is humming in my brain (might be a first name).
And – go!!
Sorry I’m not finding anything with the guardian/ward set up in the South. Here are some books I found which probably aren’t them, but you never know…
