Books on Sale: Contemporaries & Women’s Fiction with Two DABWAHA & RITA Nominees

  • No Limits

    No Limits by Lori Foster

No Limits by Lori Foster is $1.99! This is a sports contemporary romance and the first book in the Ultimate series. And whew…look at that cover! The hero is an MMA fighter who rescued the heroine a few years back, so there definitely seems to be a suspense element to the book too. Many readers found the book to have a good blend of romance and action, though a few found the book’s resolutions to be wrapped up a little too quickly. It has a 3.9-star rating on GR.

A surprise inheritance reunites a mixed martial arts fighter with the woman he’s never forgotten in the first in a smoldering new series from New York Times bestselling author Lori Foster

Cannon Colter is quintessential hero material: chiseled jawline, shredded body—the works. He’s also the guy who rescued Yvette Sweeny from kidnappers, only to put an end to her romantic dreams. These days, she’s older, smarter, determined to face whatever life throws her way. Even the prospect of sharing a house and business with Cannon.

Cannon knew Yvette wanted him three years ago. But she was young—and some things are worth waiting for. Thrown together by her grandfather’s legacy, he realizes how deep Yvette’s scars really go, and how much danger lurks in their quiet town. As pent-up desire explodes between them, protecting her becomes the only fight that matters. And he’ll break all the rules to do it….

  • Unscripted

    Unscripted by Jayne Denker

Unscripted by Jayne Denker is 99c! This is a contemporary romance between an executive producer for a hit TV drama and a theater professor. Readers say not to let the cover fool you; the romance is fun, unpredictable, and highly engaging. There are some warnings that sometimes the romance takes a backseat to the heroine’s personal growth. Another book with a 3.9-star rating on GR!

One of Hollywood’s hardest working women is about to discover there’s a lot more drama behind the camera than in front of it. . . Faith “Freakin'” Sinclair probably shouldn’t have called her boss a perv. . .or grabbed his “privates.” But as creator of the hit dramedy Modern Women, she’d had enough of his sexist insults. Now she’s untouchable in the industry–not in a good way. The only way to redeem herself is to convince Alex, the wildly popular, wildly demanding former star of her show, to come back. But there’s one obstacle in her way–one very handsome, broad-shouldered obstacle. . .

Professor Mason Mitchell is head of the theater department where Alex is studying “real” acting. The only way he’ll let Faith anywhere near Alex is if she agrees to co-teach a class. It’s an offer she can’t refuse–and as it turns out, the professor just might end up teaching Faith that there’s more to life than work–and that real-life love scenes are way more fun than fake ones. . .

  • Nowhere But Home

Nowhere But Home by Liza Palmer

Nowhere but Home by Liza Palmer is $1.99! This women’s fiction was in this year’s DABWAHA tournament, just in case the name seems familiar. Our culinary heroine was just fired from her job as a chef and must return to her small, hometown in Texas, where she goes to work as a chef for the local prison. But these aren’t just any inmates. She’s cooking last meals for those on death row. Readers say the book has a great combination of humor and tension, though a couple found the book did more telling than showing. Did anyone read this as part of the DABWAHA tournament?

After Queenie Wake is dismissed from her restaurant job, she returns to North Star to cook meals for death row inmates.

Hopeful that the bad memories of her late mother and promiscuous sister (now the mother of the captain of the high school football team) have been forgotten by the locals, Queenie discovers that some people can’t be forgotten—heartbreaker Everett Coburn—her old high-school sweetheart.

When secrets from the past emerge, will Queenie be able to stick by her family or will she leave home again?

  • Along Came Trouble

Along Came Trouble by Ruthie Knox

Along Came Trouble by Ruthie Knox is 99c! This is the second book in the Camelot contemporary romance series. This book was a part of this year’s RITA Reader Challenge. Reader PamG. gave it a B+:

I would highly recommend Along Came Trouble to anyone looking for a contemporary romance with likeable, realistic characters who actually talk to each other like intelligent adults and who grow into a mature committed relationship.  The HEA doesn’t imply perfection, and it is wonderfully comforting to think that perfection is not a prerequisite for happiness.

And Reader KellyM gave it an A-:

I really appreciated that BOTH main characters in this book have issues to deal with.  This isn’t the story of the emotionally scarred divorcee trying to move on.  I mean, it is, but that’s not all it is.  It’s also the story of a guy who’s still trying to come to terms with a family that he’s been away from through many years of deployments, and a guy who’s trying to build a business, but is worried that he might fail.  And it’s a story about family – the one you’re born with and the one you make.  It’s messy and imperfect, and that’s what makes it wonderful.

Ruthie Knox’s Camelot series continues in this sizzling eBook original novel, featuring two headstrong souls who bump heads—and bodies—as temptation and lust bring nothing but delicious trouble.

An accomplished lawyer and driven single mother, Ellen Callahan isn’t looking for any help. She’s doing just fine on her own. So Ellen’s more than a little peeved when her brother, an international pop star, hires a security guard to protect her from a prying press that will stop at nothing to dig up dirt on him. But when the tanned and toned Caleb Clark shows up at her door, Ellen might just have to plead the fifth.

Back home after a deployment in Iraq and looking for work as a civilian, Caleb signs on as Ellen’s bodyguard. After combat in the hot desert sun, this job should be a breeze. But guarding the willful beauty is harder than he imagined—and Caleb can’t resist the temptation to mix business with pleasure. With their desires growing more undeniable by the day, Ellen and Caleb give in to an evening of steamy passion. But will they ever be able to share more than just a one-night stand?

  1. “Cannon knew Yvette wanted him three years ago. But she was young—and some things are worth waiting for.”

I’m not sure why this line gives me the heebie-jeebies.

  2. Vasha says:

DPR, maybe because there’s a slight assumption of possession about it? An adult usually doesn’t want a teenager who has a crush on them because of the difference in their maturity. And you’d hope she’d change as she grows up. Probably she’ll outgrow her crush. But Cannon assumes he can have her any time he wants…

  3. SB Sarah says:

@DPR – gives me the heebie-jeebies, too. And yet, age difference is often a trope that works for me.

  4. ReneeG says:

I’m so tired of “willful beauty” – so overused and makes the heroine (because it is always a female) sound like she is a temper-iffic two.

  5. @Vasha, I think all the things you said are part of what bothered me. The whole “worth waiting for” line also made me think of the “Wife Husbandry trope.
