Not only are there paranormal – and pretend paranormal (by which I mean, I’m pretending the Singh book is paranormal) on sale today, there are some daily deals at Amazon (again) that are pretty spiffy.
If you or someone you know is a fan of the Boxcar Children books, there are 130 of them on sale for $1.99. That’s a glom that should keep someone reading until 2016.
And if you’re thinking that you might want to craft some beer, learn to compost, or knit all the things, there is a monster pile of nonfiction instructional books on sale for $1.99, too. It’s almost too much to look through, there are so many.
However, among them is Homemade Liqueurs and Infused Spirits for $1.99. This book has been on sale previously and several of you told me it was pretty easy and that the results were excellent. You won’t be able to make anything by midnight to celebrate the new year, but maybe next week, it’s limoncello time!
And if you’re feeling crafty, there’s a TON of books to choose from, including Crochet One-Skein Wonders and Knitting Rules: The Yarn Harlot’s Bag of Tricks for $1.99
Halfway to the Grave

RECOMMENDED: Halfway to the Grave by Jeaniene Frost is $1.99 today. This is the first book in the Cat & Bones/Night Huntress series, and I reviewed it back when it came out in 2007:
This nocturnal badassery comes to a screeching halt when Cat is kidnapped by an exceptionally strong nosferatu named Bones, who is really, really old, really, really strong, and really, really, really sure that Cat is working for someone, someone who wants him dead.
When Cat, sure her end is about two seconds away, tells him the truth about her life and mission, Bones refuses to believe her, until Cat’s emotions get the better of her and her eyes glow green. Bones, who is not a dumbass after many hundreds of years of existence, makes her an offer: train with him, and work with him as a vampire bounty hunter, or die.
I really liked this book, especially the heroine.
Half-vampire Catherine Crawfield is going after the undead with a vengeance, hoping that one of these deadbeats is her father—the one responsible for ruining her mother’s life. Then she’s captured by Bones, a vampire bounty hunter, and is forced into an unholy partnership.
In exchange for finding her father, Cat agrees to train with the sexy night stalker until her battle reflexes are as sharp as his fangs. She’s amazed she doesn’t end up as his dinner—are there actually good vampires? Pretty soon Bones will have her convinced that being half-dead doesn’t have to be all bad. But before she can enjoy her newfound status as kick-ass demon hunter, Cat and Bones are pursued by a group of killers. Now Cat will have to choose a side . . . and Bones is turning out to be as tempting as any man with a heartbeat.

Once Burned by Jeaniene Frost is $1.99! This is the start of her Night Prince paranormal romance series, and the third book, Bound by Flames, comes out in January.
The hero is a vampire named Vlad (Yes, the very Vlad from Frost’s Night Huntress series) with the crazy scary ability to control fire and a heroine with the affinity for electricity. Readers loved the blend of action and intimacy, but some felt the book started to slow during the second half. Has anyone else read this one?
She’s a mortal with dark powers…
After a tragic accident scarred her body and destroyed her dreams, Leila never imagined that the worst was still to come: terrifying powers that let her channel electricity and learn a person’s darkest secrets through a single touch. Leila is doomed to a life of solitude…until creatures of the night kidnap her, forcing her to reach out with a telepathic distress call to the world’s most infamous vampire…
He’s the Prince of Night…
Vlad Tepesh inspired the greatest vampire legend of all—but whatever you do, don’t call him Dracula. Vlad’s ability to control fire makes him one of the most feared vampires in existence, but his enemies have found a new weapon against him—a beautiful mortal with powers to match his own. When Vlad and Leila meet, however, passion ignites between them, threatening to consume them both. It will take everything that they are to stop an enemy intent on bringing them down in flames.

Karma Girl by Jennifer Estep is free at Amazon, $1.05 at Google: Play, and $3.99 elsewhere. This is the first book in the Bigtime Superheroes series, originally published in 2007.
This series is different from Estep’s Gin Blanco series: the Bigtime books are more comedic, and deal with superheroes instead of assassins. This is sort of a blend of comic book parody, chick-lit, paranormal, and urban fantasy. This book has a 3.7-star average.
Investigative reporter Carmen Cole gets the surprise of her life on her wedding day when she discovers that her fiancé and best friend are sleeping together—and that the two of them are her town’s resident superhero and ubervillain. Shocked and hurt, Carmen reveals their secret identities and then decides to devote her life to unmasking every superhero and ubervillain who crosses her path.
A series of successful unmaskings lands Carmen a job at The Exposé, one of the biggest newspapers in Bigtime, New York, a city that’s full of superheroes and ubervillains. Carmen is in her element—until she gets kidnapped by the Terrible Triad, Bigtime’s most dangerous ubervillain team.
The Triad orders Carmen to uncover the secret identity of Striker, the leader of the Fearless Five, Bigtime’s most popular superhero team—or else they’ll drop her in a vat of radioactive goo. With that threat hanging over her, Carmen sets out to unmask Striker, but what she doesn’t count on is falling for the sexy superhero. But with the Terrible Triad lurking around, this is one story that just might be the death of her….

Long ago, Nalini Singh wrote paranormal romances about a man named Caleb whose supernatural powers were focused through the use of red v-neck sweaters. They were a most dangerous type of shifter… I’m kidding!
Secrets in the Marriage Bed is a Harlequin Desire from 2006 and it’s on sale for $.99 at Amazon. This story is about a married couple who have many problems to work out, and the reviews on GR mention frequently the strength of the character development – which is not a surprise. This book has a 3.5-star average.
EVERY MARRIAGE HAS ITS SECRETS
They were reconciling. That was all Caleb Callaghan could focus on when his estranged wife, Vicki, shared the news of her pregnancy. He was determined that this time their marriage would succeed, no matter what it took.
But was Vicki’s price too high? She wanted more than his love and support…she demanded honesty between them, starting with his secrets. But there was something in Caleb’s past he could not–would not–share. For the truth would only destroy them.

For me, Frost’s Night Prince series is book-crack that I can only describe as a cupcake, cooked in a delicious pie, then dipped in chocolate and served with a side of ice cream. It’s quite predictable, but it feels like it was written with me specifically in mind. I adore the heroine (she’s even a circus performer…my childhood dream job!). Leila is strong and thinks for herself, but also irrational at times and doesn’t always make the best decisions. Plus she has a special gift – tactile mind reading – that allows for flashbacks that support the back stories in a way that doesn’t feel forced. The hero is your typical alpha-male protector vampire which I know is not for everyone, but Vlad also has some interesting complexity and I like that while he thinks he’s seen it all, he’s willing to start changing his perspectives throughout the series. (I probably should mention that my first real crush was Angel from Buffy the Vampire Slayer quickly followed by a deep attraction to Spike that continues to this day. I might have a type…) The secondary characters are well developed and I love her sister to pieces. The series isn’t groundbreaking, but if you’re looking for an enjoyable read with fun characters, I’d recommend the series. I read the second book the day it came out and have been waiting for the third ever since.
I love Once Burned. Love.
Wicked Intentions, book one of the Maiden Lane series, is 1.99 on Amazon. It’s a great read!
I love the Bigtime books so so so much.
