You did it! We figured this one out! It is a truth universally acknowledged (by me for certain) that the Bitchery pretty much knows everything, and really, it's true. Scroll down to see the solution for this HaBO - and many thanks!

This request is from Nancy, who is looking for a fantasy romance from some years back:
Sometime in the late 80s, or possibly early 90s, I read this book – can’t remember it’s name and I’m going crazy here. It’s my white whale internet
search – maybe if I just Google MOAR BETTER this time I’ll find it?
The theme was Mists of Avalon-esque, in an alternate universe Arthurian Britain – proud, independent priestess with waist-length silver hair has to marry a priest from an opposing but complimentary sect. She’s fair, he’s dark, at first she’s prickly but they come together with a timeless passion, etc., etc.
At some point, they gave to go via ship to some random far-off
land to counter some unnatural scourge, and he gets either possessed by said
unnatural scourge or maybe his inherent darkness within, but her love etc.,
etc., saves the day. It seems like bus name was “Cain,” though it could have
been “Cane” or “Kane” or “Kain.”
It’s a romance novel with a fantasy theme, not a fantasy novel. So lots of doing it.
I realize this isn’t much to go on. Still hoping you or one of your readers can help because this is driving me nuts.
Is there a name for the slightly-tickly feeling in the back of your brain that says, “At one time, you might have known this one?” I have that feeling. Do you? Do you recognize this book?

It’s Passion Moon Rising by Rebecca Brandewyne. Here’ the blurb:
Ileana was the cherished princess of a brave, noble land. Cain was a warrior prince who denied the danger that could destroy him. In each other’s arms they shared a wondrous love, but in a fierce clash of wills their union was torn by betrayal. Now as their kingdoms are plunged into war, they must take up the only weapon that can save their world–the gleaming sword of love!
“The gleaming sword of love”?! I can’t wait to read this!
I think I need to read this. Thanks for the ID, Francesca.
Wow! As always, the Bitchery always find the answer.
This sounds like fun, though double bonus points would have been awarded for “glistening sword of love”
Nothing that happens to me today is going to make me as happy as “the gleaming sword of love.” Although I agree with Melonie: glistening would have been even better.

Is that a record?
I believe it used to be, possibly still is, that answering a HaBO right in one won one (irresistible, sorry) a peerage.
All Hail Her Serene Bitchfulness Francesca!
wow! that was quick!
Right. That does it. Can there *please* be a warning along the lines of “Do not drink whilst reading these comments” so that, next time, when I read the gleaming sword of love I don’t spit the mouthful of tea I was enjoying all over my keyboard????
The gleaming sword of love.
I need one of those.
And yes- answering correctly on the first comment used to earn a peerage title. Want me to bring that back? 🙂
Gillian, I think that should probably be a given on this site/these comments. So unless this is the first time you’ve seen the site, you have only yourself to blame.
Oh my god, this is amazing!! THANK you, Francesca!
*off to find gleaming sword of love*
