Books on Sale: Historicals

Avon has lowered the price on a bunch of different books to try to entice readers to try a new series. Well, we know that temptation won’t work at ALL, will it? (Ha. It’ll work very well on me, dangnabbit.) If you’re in the mood for Scottish historicals, you’re in luck today. Plus there’s a historical from Vanessa Kelly with intrigue galore, so if that’s your catnip, welcome to sale temptation.

  • Elusive Passion

    Elusive Passion by Kathryn Smith

Elusive Passion by Kathryn Smith is .99c at most vendors. This is the first book in the Ryland Brothers series, and features a courtesan who kidnaps a marquess (as you do) and accuses him of murder (of course). Their relationship then progresses from hate to love (naturally). Those who enjoyed this book adored the heroine, who is resourceful, smart, brave, and takes no crap from anyone. This book has a 3.9-star average.

Who is the mysterious Varya? On the surface she’s a woman who tempts men beyond reason, but no one has touched the heart of the elusive creature…that is, until now

Miles Christian, the Marquess of Wynter, never expected to be abducted at gunpoint and accused of murder — and certainly not by a woman! When he discovers his would-be kidnapper is the elusive Varya, a beauty courted — and desired — by most of the men in London society, he is doubly shocked … and enthralled. Obsessed with this seductress, Miles is determined to keep her by his side as they hunt for the true culprit, even if it means putting them both in danger.

For Varya the danger lies in Miles’s very touch, and though she’s far from ready to trust the dashing rogue, she cannot deny the attraction that flares between them. But when they are caught in a compromising position, Varya reluctantly agrees to pose as Miles’s mistress, even as she resists his potent efforts to woo her into his bed. For none could guess that her bloodlines are as pure as any English aristocrat’s or that behind her public mask lies a woman determined not to relinquish her hard-won independence to a man’s desire — unless she ensnares his heart as well.

  • To Marry a Scottish Laird

To Marry a Scottish Laird by Lynsay Sands

To Marry a Scottish Laird by Lynsay Sands is $2.99 right now. This is a Scottish romance (yes, way) and it has a 3.9-star average on GR. It’s book 2 in the English Bride in Scotland series, and readers who liked it enjoyed the mix of catnip tropes: heroine disguised as a boy (HOW does this always work?!), marriage due to compromising scandal, and a heroine on a quest. Have you read this one?

Highlander Campbell Sinclair is no stranger to battle, so when he sees a lad attacked by bandits, he jumps into the fray. He didn’t count on being stabbed. Grateful to the boy for nursing him back to health, Cam offers to accompany Jo safely to his destination. But when he accidentally comes across the lad bathing in the river, Cam discovers that Jo is actually Joan…with the most sinful of curves.

Joan promised her mother that she would deliver a scroll to the clan MacKay. But traveling alone is dangerous, even disguised as a boy. When a Scottish warrior lends his aid, she is more than relieved…until he surprises her with lingering kisses and caresses that prove her disguise hasn’t fooled him. As their passion ignites, will the secrets of the scroll force a wedding…and lead to a love she’s never known?

  • Secrets for Seducing a Royal Bodyguard

Secrets for Seducing a Royal Bodyguard by Vanessa Kelly

Secrets for Seducing a Royal Bodyguard by Vanessa Kelly is $1.99. This book has a 3.7-star average and is the first book in the Renegade Royals series. Some readers struggled with the instantaneous lustypants between the hero and heroine while others really liked the heroine’s bravery and her strength. There’s a fair amount of action/mystery/thriller elements in this book, so if that’s your cup of catnip, you might want to grab this one.

Highland Autumn has a 3.8-star average, and readers who liked it loooooved the hero. If you’re craving some Scottish historicals, you can grab the whole series for less than $10, and be ready for book 3 when it comes out.

Megan McNabb would do anything to get out of marrying a man she does not love—even handfasting for a year and a day with an English stranger.

A mysterious letter draws Lord Kit Rossington to Scotland in search of a lost treasure. But the marriage-minded females he avoided in England follow him to the Highlands, and he’ll do anything—even a temporary marriage with a Highland lass—to keep his freedom while he solves a mystery that’s haunted Glen Dorian for almost a century.

Also on sale: “Stray” by Rachel Vincent – $1.99 for Kindle. This is the first book in her werecats paranormal romance series, which is a total of 8 books long and complete. 🙂

  2. Erin Burns says:

I’ve read To Marry a Scottish Laird, and did enjoy it, but while you can read it as a standalone, I wouldn’t because some of the emotional impact that takes it a bit past the tropes comes from having the back story.

  3. Thank you for reminding me about the Vanessa Kelly series. I enjoyed ROYAL BODYGUARD and book two (ROYAL BRIDEGROOM) and have now discovered two more novels and two novellas in the series. Off to snag them to add to my ever-toppling TBR pile!

  4. SuperWendy says:

I read Elusive Passion by Kathryn Smith way back in 2001 (!) when I was reviewing for the The Romance Reader. I really enjoyed it a lot – I remember it being a fun read and especially liked the heroine (the hero is one of those “I’ll never marry again!” blokes – but hey, nobody’s perfect). It was also the author’s debut. At 99 cents I’m so tempted to download it and give it a reread!

The Duchess War by Courtney Milan is FREE at Amazon Kindle today

  6. Lostshadows says:

I think this has my favorite girl disguised as a boy, but no one notices joke.

  7. olivia says:

Thanks for the Elusive Passion tip! Been filling out my gaps, and for some reason never got #1 in the series. Been checking at my local used bookstores, but this is cheaper, so yay!

  8. JamesLynch says:

This reminds me of the FUTURAMA episode “War is the H-Word” where Leela joined the army disguised as a man, resulting in some confusion from her one-night stand Zapp Brannigan: “That young man fills me with hope. Plus some other emotions which are weird and deeply confusing.”

  9. JamesLynch says:

Oh, the above comment was in response to the comment “heroine disguised as a boy (HOW does this always work?!), ” Sorry I don’t know how to use the quote function here.

  10. Miranda says:

And now Grace Burrowes’ “Douglas: Lord of Heartache” is free for Kindle at Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FG9GY46/

And of course, a bunch of Eileen Dreyer’s “Drake’s Rakes” ebooks are $1.99 at Amazon and B&N.

  11. Shannon says:

Nope. Not going to do it. I have many books on my TBR. Okay, over to check Amazon.
