All I Ever Wanted

All I Ever Wanted by Kristan Higgins is $1.99 this weekend only. This is a contemporary romance originally published in 2010, and the hero is a cranky, socially awkward veterinarian – in case that rings any bells that maybe you’ve read this one before. This book has a 3.9-star average, and readers who loved it said they laughed out loud repeatedly.
TURNING THIRTY HAS ITS UPS AND DOWNS…
For Callie Grey, coming to grips with her age means facing the fact that her boyfriend-slash-boss is way overdue with a marriage proposal. And that she’s way off track, because Mark has suddenly announced his engagement to the company’s new Miss Perfect. If that isn’t bad enough, her mom decides to throw her a Big Three-Oh birthday bash…in the family funeral home.
Bad goes to worse when Callie stirs up a relationship with the town’s single—yet not so warm and fuzzy—veterinarian, in order to flag Mark’s attention. So what if Ian McFarland is more comfortable with animals? So what if he’s formal, orderly and just a bit tense? Friendly, fun-loving and spontaneous Callie decides it’s time for Ian to get a personality makeover. But, dang—if he doesn’t shock the heck out of her, she might actually fall for Georgebury, Vermont’s unlikeliest eligible bachelor….

RECOMMENDED: Darling Beast by Elizabeth Hoyt is $3.99 right now. This is a historical romance that RedHeadedGirl and Elyse reviewed recently. They gave it an A- and said they loved the class-boundary crossing protagonists, and especially the sex scenes, which are superbly written.
A MAN CONDEMNED…
Falsely accused of murder and mute from a near-fatal beating, Apollo Greaves, Viscount Kilbourne has escaped from Bedlam. With the Crown’s soldiers at his heels, he finds refuge in the ruins of a pleasure garden, toiling as a simple gardener. But when a vivacious young woman moves in, he’s quickly driven to distraction…
A DESPERATE WOMAN…
London’s premier actress, Lily Stump, is down on her luck when she’s forced to move into a scorched theatre with her maid and small son. But she and her tiny family aren’t the only inhabitants-a silent, hulking beast of a man also calls the charred ruins home. Yet when she catches him reading her plays, Lily realizes there’s more to this man than meets the eye.
OUT OF ASH, DESIRE FLARES
Though scorching passion draws them together, Apollo knows that Lily is keeping secrets. When his past catches up with him, he’s forced to make a choice: his love for Lily…or the explosive truth that will set him free.

Pie It Forward by Gesine Bullock-Prado is $2.99 today only. This is a cookbook all about, you guessed it, pie. This book has a 4+ star average on GR, and the readers who gave it 5 stars say that the recipes are delicious, the instructions are simple, and the photographs inside are equally beautiful and useful.
This book has been on sale before, and I know some of you bought it – have you used it? What do you think?
It’s a conundrum I can’t understand. Someone’s hankering for pie; you can see the pie-longing in their eyes. They want a delicious flaky crust, something with buttery overtones. They want fresh fruit—not a vague whisper of berry in a butter cream, but overt chunks of apple, discernible bites of berry. But it’s just not done. You don’t serve pie at special events like fiftieth birthdays, dinner parties, silver anniversaries, or, God forbid, at a wedding. To which I reply, ‘Bullpuckies.’”
And so begins Pie It Forward: Pies, Tarts, Tortes, Galettes, and Other Pastries Reinvented. Pie has always been a popular cookbook topic, yet in Pie It Forward, baker, confectioner, and pastry master Gesine Bullock-Prado unveils an entirely new frontier of pies, redefining what can be done with a piecrust and pastry shell. Expect lattice and cutouts with an entirely modern twist. Homemade puff pastry made easy. Individual pie pops to replace tired cupcakes. Surprising and wildly successful explorations with beer (Chocolate Stout Pudding Pie), exotic fruits (Yuzu-Ginger Rice Pudding Meringue Pie), and candy-making (Earl Grey Truffle Tart).
And there are the classics too—riffing on her German roots, her Hollywood background, and life on her Vermont farm—a Blueberry Brown Butter Tart, an Italian Plum Tart with a yeasted-dough crust, a tiramisu-inspired Espresso Tart, a Vermont Pizza Pie, and more. Including sweet, savory, layered, and miniature pies and tarts, Bullock-Prado presents these recipes with a voice that removes the intimidation factor and inspires readers to break out of the double-crust straitjacket and try her signature creations—and to laugh out loud along the way. What Happens at Christmas by Victoria Alexander is free right now at all vendors. This is a holiday historical (obviously) and it has a 3.6-star average. The heroine throws a house party for the holidays to impress a prince, and hires actors to pose as her family. That always works out the way they want, right? Of course.
Readers who liked this book loved the farcical elements and the second chance love story between the hero, who is not a prince, and the heroine, who thinks she wants one.
You are cordially invited to Christmas at Millworth Manor. . .
Camille, Lady Lydingham, requests the pleasure of your company at a festive house party, as she endeavors to coax a marriage proposal from Prince Nikolai Pruzinsky of Greater Avalonia.
The hostess’s relatives will be in attendance–in this case, a troupe of actors hired to impersonate a proper English family in order to fool the Prince.
Gate-crashing, distractingly handsome first loves like Grayson Elliott are most unwelcome.
Games will be played.
Motives will be revealed.
Mayhem may ensue.
And hearts will be won–and lost–in the most romantic, magical season of all.

Dark Wolf by Christine Feehan is $2.00 at Google:Play and Amazon right now. This is book 25 (yes, 25!) in the Carpathian series. It has a 4.3-star average on GR. Readers who liked it said they’d been waiting for this couple’s story, and though some were let down, for most of them, it was worth the wait.
He is Carpathian. Ancient and unassailable. She is human. Young and vulnerable. Without her, he will not survive. Caught between two warring species, Dimitri has spent centuries hunting the undead to keep his people free and humans safe. He has survived honorably when others have chosen to give up their souls. Now, marked for extermination by the Lycans, Dimitri finds himself alone, and fearing for his life. But salvation is coming…
No Lycan would ever suspect someone like Skyler to dare mount a secret rescue operation. A teenage girl. A human of untested abilities. But she has something no one else does. She is predestined for Dimitri—as he is for her. And there is nothing stronger for Skyler than her desire to see her life-dream come true. Whatever the risk.

I haven’t read it, but Gone Girl is $2.99 at Amazon. The Fault in Our Stars, a literary YA also made into a movie is $2.99. And again I haven’t read it, but the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy is $14.99, again at Amazon. Looks like their CyberMonday sale is on at Amazon. No luck today with Georgette Heyer, and probably won’t be given the bargain in AmazonPrime.
‘All I Ever Wanted’ was the beginning of the end of Higgins for me; her protagonists are often self-centered to the point of cruelty to those around them, and rarely apologize or realize they’ve done anything wrong. I was actually happy to see one of the heroines get the same treatment in a different book, and realized that was a strong sign I needed to stop reading.
Will definitely be picking up ‘Darling Beast’.
Grace Burrowes has several free novel/las as well–A Kiss for Luck preorder is free, Douglas (#3 in the lonely lords) is free, and Kiss and Tell is .99
And apparently there’s a couple of bundles of her stuff as well, such as the Windham daughters and the courtship novellas.

@ Liz H. – I’m all for a little self-awareness. All I Ever Wanted didn’t do much for me, even though veterinarian stories are catnip to me.
What Happens at Christmas is a fun read and a good distraction from the holi-daze. Bring along a willing suspension of disbelief and a cup of Christmas tea for the best experience.
In 1895 my grandmother and her sister were married in a double ceremony; the couples also celebrated their 50th aniversary together. Pie was served at their wedding reception.
Normally I really like Higgins, and I haaaaated All I Ever Wanted. IIRC, the screechy heroine kept referring to the hero as “autistic”, which rubbed me the wrong way.
