Books on Sale: An Assortment of Contemporaries, Plus a Rec’d Fantasy

  • The Assassins Series: 5-Book Bundle

The Assassins Series: 5-Book Bundle by Toni Aleo

The Assassins series by Toni Aleo is $3.99! This bundle features four full-length books and a bonus novella. I seriously cannot get over how amazing of a deal this is. If your catnip included sports-themed contemporary romances, good luck resisting this deal. Readers loved the different personalities on the Assassins hockey team, though several found the HEAs a little rushed. Any sports contemporary fans out there?

Steamy, heart-wrenching, and hilarious, the Nashville Assassins series isn’t just for hockey fans—readers of Rachel Gibson, Susan Elizabeth Phillips, and Molly O’Keefe will adore New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Toni Aleo’s sexy take on contemporary romance. Now all four novels and the companion novella are together in one can’t-miss eBook bundle:

    TAKING SHOTS
    TRYING TO SCORE
    EMPTY NET
    FALLING FOR THE BACKUP
    BLUE LINES

The Assassins may be the hottest things on two legs and ice skates, but when the gloves come off, the chiseled men of this Nashville NHL team will do anything for the women they love: A reformed bad boy helps a charming, willful beauty face off against the demons of her past. . . . The league’s leading scorer pulls a power play to make things right with the one that got away. . . . A heartbroken rookie vows to turn a one-night stand into a happily ever after. . . . Looking for a second chance, a former superstar encounters the most distracting woman he’s ever met. . . . And one crazy-sexy night with a supposedly nice girl leads to a very big surprise: two blue lines on a pregnancy test.

  • Foreplay

    Foreplay by Sophie Jordan

Foreplay by Sophie Jordan is $2.99 at most vendors right now and $1.99 at Amazon. This is the first book in Jordan’s Ivy Chronicles series and is a new adult, contemporary romance. The heroine has held a candle for her best friend’s brother for years, though isn’t so confident about her feminine wiles. She enlists the help of a hunky bartender (as you do) to gain a little experience when it comes to love. From what I can gather, the story is told from the heroine’s POV, but it’s not first-person? The heroine’s narrating is definitely something some readers disliked. It has a 4-star rating on GR and the second book, Tease ( A | K | AB | Au ), is also on sale for a whopping 99c!

Before she goes after the life she’s always wanted, she’s about to find the one she needs.

Pepper has been hopelessly in love with her best friend’s brother, Hunter, for like ever. He’s the key to everything she’s always craved: security, stability, family. But she needs Hunter to notice her as more than just a friend. Even though she’s kissed exactly one guy, she has just the plan to go from novice to rock star in the bedroom—take a few pointers from someone who knows what he’s doing.

Her college roommates have the perfect teacher in mind. But bartender Reece is nothing like the player Pepper expects. Yes, he’s beyond gorgeous, but he’s also dangerous, deep—with a troubled past. Soon what started as lessons in attraction are turning both their worlds around, and showing just what can happen when you go past foreplay and get to what’s real…

  • Hollywood on Tap

Hollywood on Tap by Avery Flynn

Hollywood on Tap by Avery Flynn is 99c! This a relatively short contemporary romance and is the second book in the Sweet Salvation Brewery series. It was also released only a few days ago! Readers loved the opposites attract story, though a couple were unhappy with the last quarter of the book. Since I plan on reading this one, I’ve avoided finding out what that actually means. So spoil at your own risk, Bitchery! It has a 4.5-star rating on GR.

For years, Sean O’Dell has hidden his past as a Hollywood heartthrob from everyone at the Sweet Salvation Brewery. However, the arrival of nosey efficiency expert Natalie Sweet threatens the status quo. It doesn’t help that with her glasses, buttoned-up sweaters and always pulled-back hair that she’s uncovered one secret already: His attraction for hot librarian types.

Natalie has had enough of the strong-and-silent Sean submarining her efforts to change the brewery for the better. She’s ready to do whatever it takes to make her vision a reality, even if that means taking down the pig-headed and too-hot-for-his-own-good brewmaster.

Sizzling attraction battles stubborn determination as Natalie and Sean go head to head in a battle that’s anything but business as usual.

  • The Queen of the Tearling

The Queen of the Tearling by Erika Johansen

The Queen of the Tearling by Erika Johansen is $1.99! I remember when this exploded onto the stands a few months ago. Several of my friends and colleagues snatched it up, and loved it! It’s also pretty gorgeous to look at in person. However, perusing the GR reviews shows that readers either loved it or really hated it. Many had issues with the world-building, though quite a number of readers praised the unconventional heroine. This is also the start of a trilogy. Any interested?

On her nineteenth birthday, Princess Kelsea Raleigh Glynn, raised in exile, sets out on a perilous journey back to the castle of her birth to ascend her rightful throne. Plain and serious, a girl who loves books and learning, Kelsea bears little resemblance to her mother, the vain and frivolous Queen Elyssa. But though she may be inexperienced and sheltered, Kelsea is not defenseless: Around her neck hangs the Tearling sapphire, a jewel of immense magical power; and accompanying her is the Queen’s Guard, a cadre of brave knights led by the enigmatic and dedicated Lazarus. Kelsea will need them all to survive a cabal of enemies who will use every weapon—from crimson-caped assassins to the darkest blood magic—to prevent her from wearing the crown.

Despite her royal blood, Kelsea feels like nothing so much as an insecure girl, a child called upon to lead a people and a kingdom about which she knows almost nothing. But what she discovers in the capital will change everything, confronting her with horrors she never imagined. An act of singular daring will throw Kelsea’s kingdom into tumult, unleashing the vengeance of the tyrannical ruler of neighboring Mortmesne: the Red Queen, a sorceress possessed of the darkest magic. Now Kelsea will begin to discover whom among the servants, aristocracy, and her own guard she can trust.

But the quest to save her kingdom and meet her destiny has only just begun—a wondrous journey of self-discovery and a trial by fire that will make her a legend…if she can survive.

I purchased Hollywood on Tap on its release day and am saving it for this weekend. There were some download issues with Amazon which have since been fixed. I really enjoyed the first book in the series, Enemies on Tap, which was an enemies to lovers story.

  2. @Amanda says:

@LauraL: See, I didn’t enjoy Enemies on Tap that much. It was kind of mediocre and the hatred for the Sweets in the book felt really unfounded. That being said, I loved Sean and Natalie in the first book and for me, those characters were so dynamic. I remember reading the first one and getting so excited when I saw a scene with Sean and/or Natalie coming up.

  3. Mpls says:

Assassins: Blue Lines was horrendously awful, IMO. I hate it enough to attempt a rant, but was unable to manage coherency, such was my WTF-ing. Maybe the others were better, but BL had a hero that I was rooting for her to kick to the curb and was never given any indication what she saw in him. Oh, and hero blames heroine for ruining his life professionally by getting pregnant, and then basically forces her to marry him to rehab his reputation because she owes him, despite her understandable reluctance to do so.

    Just sayin’

THE QUEEN OF THE TEARLING IS ON SALE OHMYGOODNESSLIKEDANG! Seriously. This book, while it had its flaws, has brought me back to reading epic historical fantasy. It got me back to Garth Nix, Meredith Anne Pierce, and trying out new authors like Rae Carson and Robin LaFevers, all awesome fantasy full of detail and kick-butt female protagonists. I’ve had at least three customers come in at the bookstore where I work, saying “OMG, I just finished this book and I don’t even like fantasy and I need the next one yesterday.” I one-clicked this so fast I think my debit card got clickburn. Sadly, the next one isn’t due until late next spring. Thanks, publisher, for your pesky scheduling. The trilogy has also been optioned for the movies, with the producers of Harry Potter on board and Emma Watson apparently slated to play the lead role.

Also, yes, all that gold is shiny on the hardcover AND it has a ribbon bookmark. Classy and gorgeous.

Another Fantasy book I’d recommend is one which has been under the radar, This Crumbling Pageant. It’s well-written, and the author took the time to really research details to make them historically accurate. Set in Regency England, it travels through two parallel worlds and covers a lot of territory: fantasy, romance, power struggles, prophesy, etc… I liked that the protagonist is female.
