Updated 10 October: We have a winner! The lucky recipient of a pair of Lantern Moon needles and a copy of Outlander is:
Jennifer in GA, who said that, “Outlander has pushed me to sign up for a knitting class so I can learn to knit ALL THE THINGS, but especially the fingerless glove/arm warmer thingies.”
Congratulations, Jennifer, and thank you to everyone who entered! Next week, we'll have another knitting pattern from Elyse, who is here for your winter knitting needs. Thank you for entering and for reading Smart Bitches!
To help you get through the rough months until Outlander resumes, and to assist in your Outlandish knitting endeavors, we're giving away a copy of the novel Outlander by Diana Gabaldon and a pair of ebony Lantern Moon knitting needles!
The winner can choose between straight or circular ebony needles by Lantern Moon–we'll even try to accommodate your needle size preference–and can also choose the format for their copy of Outlander. We're all about choices around here.
Just leave a comment below telling us what you'd knit with your bitchin' needles to enter.
The winner will be randomly selected on Friday 10 October 2014 at 12pm Eastern.
Standard disclaimers apply: Void where prohibited. Open to international residents where permitted by applicable law. Must be over 18 and ready to knit like the wind. No poking other people with the needles. No putting your eye out. The book Outlander does not contain pictures of shirtless Jamie, but the sex scenes may cause the vapors. I am not the boss of you. Charles is in charge.
I'm betting that many a knitted garment will be made during the Outlander hiatus, and we want you to be able to knit with us. So, what will it be? Arm warmers? Outlandish cowls? Share your plans with us!

Well, a friend of mine is very patient & willing to teach me how to knit, so I think I would want to start with an afghan or blanket – that way I can get a hang on the actual stitches & whatnot before I branch out into booties/socks, hats, & pet toys….
I am a neophyte when it comes to knitting and Outlander the book (I was able to watch the TV series because of a Starz promo that serendipitously aligned with the broadcast period, yea!), so of course I would want to try Elyse’s cowl pattern. Although I really need fingerless gloves for typing in a drafty, cold house in the wintertime. (‘Cause, you know, winter is coming—but that’s a different book/TV series.)
I’m gearing up for some quick holiday knitting- – I definitely have another Honey Cowl in my plans, and Turning Point was a great quick small shawl.
Thanks for the chance!
pompom hat and scarf for my little outlander! maybe a dress also
I JUST DISCOVERED I HAVE BEEN KNITTING WRONG FOR THE PAST 12 YEARS. I’ve been knitting in the back of the loop instead of the front, creating little twists. You only notice if its side by side and you know what you are looking for… but now of course I DO know what I’m looking for!
So I will redo the cowl I made last week, thats what I would do. And weep in shame.
I’d buy new yarn to do it with though, because eff frogging.
I made a cowl a few weeks ago and I’m making the arm warmers now! Yay, Ootlandar! (That is what my horrible Scottish accent looks like in writing.)
I have just started knitting and it is so much fun! I’ve also read (and watched) Outlander and would love to knit one of the cowls that Claire wears…with some matching arm warmers and/or gloves, of course. I have a long way to go, talent wise, to knit something really awesome, but I am up for the challenge! 😀
I’m ready for a new hat.
I haven’t knitted anything in a few years, so I would have to start over again with something easy like a scarf! Thanks for the giveaway!
A blanket for my bachelor brother. He just confessed to sleeping with his saddle blanket from his motorcycle every night because he can’t be bothered to go buy a real one. Trust me, it’s not the money. It’s just the guy.
I’m knitting a Doctor Who scarf in Osgood colors from Day of the Doctor – the 50th Anniversary. It’s going to be ridiculously awesome. I’m also knitting various berets/tams. I can’t seem to get hat sizes right, but practice makes perfect!
I am all about hats (cabled hats especially) and scarfs.
I’ve already knitted a pair of fingerless gloves and now I am getting ready to do a cowl, for my Mom for Christmas!
I’m a fiber artist that uses knitting in my work. I knit jewelry, dolls, objects and additions to my wallhangings. I make jars of pickles, gender identity sculptures
While is in the hospital I am preparing to finally make something for mayself, a vest.
Like so many others, I keep an eye on the knits in Outlander! I might Jamie a sporran warmer (not that he needs it with Claire around), but seriously, for myself, I’d knit a hat (I really need a new one), and am such a sucker for scarves. Maybe some fingerless gloves too. I’ve already promised my dad a scarf for Christmas, so need to get my knit on soon!
Knitted up one Outlandish Cowl, and want to start the Arm Warmers soon. Thanks for the patterns!
Will either finish granddaughter number 6’s afghan or this lovely shawl I’ve been meaning to get to or this cowl pattern I’ve had on the back burner or those fan fingerless gloves. So many patterns in my basket so little time
Something with a leafy cowl kinda feel. And also…something that is quick and can be done while slacking at work.
Something to keep Jamie warm under his kilt 😉 And a cowl for me.
I love the fingerless gloves – but I would knit it all!
I want to knit really stylish hooded cowls for my nieces.
I would knit intarsia fish dishcloths.
We’ve got a raunchy little discussion group going on FB where we talk about the finer points of female orgasms, fan service in the TV show, and Sam Heughan’s fine, fine body in modern and period clothes. I volunteered to knit each of them one of the cowls following the lovely SBTB pattern you posted!
I have been coveting those fingerless gloves/arm warmers since the second episode. I definitely need to make myself a pair!
fingerless gloves! 😉
I’d choose size ten needles, to knit the lovely wool/silk yarn I’m waiting to be delivered, and knit Claire’s “Rent” shawl.
