An Outlander and Knitting Giveaway!

Book Outlander Updated 10 October: We have a winner! The lucky recipient of a pair of Lantern Moon needles and a copy of Outlander is:

Jennifer in GA, who said that,  Outlander has pushed me to sign up for a knitting class so I can learn to knit ALL THE THINGS, but especially the fingerless glove/arm warmer thingies.”

Congratulations, Jennifer, and thank you to everyone who entered! Next week, we'll have another knitting pattern from Elyse, who is here for your winter knitting needs. Thank you for entering and for reading Smart Bitches!

To help you get through the rough months until Outlander resumes, and to assist in your Outlandish knitting endeavors, we're giving away a copy of the novel Outlander by Diana Gabaldon and a pair of ebony Lantern Moon knitting needles!

Ebony Knitting Needles

The winner can choose between straight or circular ebony needles by Lantern Moon–we'll even try to accommodate your needle size preference–and can also choose the format for their copy of Outlander. We're all about choices around here.

Just leave a comment below telling us what you'd knit with your bitchin' needles to enter.

The winner will be randomly selected on Friday 10 October 2014 at 12pm Eastern.

Standard disclaimers apply: Void where prohibited. Open to international residents where permitted by applicable law. Must be over 18 and ready to knit like the wind. No poking other people with the needles. No putting your eye out. The book Outlander does not contain pictures of shirtless Jamie, but the sex scenes may cause the vapors. I am not the boss of you. Charles is in charge.

I'm betting that many a knitted garment will be made during the Outlander hiatus, and we want you to be able to knit with us. So, what will it be? Arm warmers? Outlandish cowls? Share your plans with us!

  1. Kiki says:

I would knit a cozy lace patterned hat and a lace shawl. I can’t seem to get enough of open work knits lately 🙂

  2. Melanie says:

I would knit a blanket for me!  Since June I have been working on baby blankets for friends and family; I am now almost halfway through the second of three.  I’ve been meaning for ages to knit myself a throw/blanket/afghan.

  3. Gwen Freeman says:

Ooo, definitely a cowl, or arm warmers.. arms always getting cold, so Arm warmers might be better:)

  4. craftyone says:

Why limit myself?  I would knit whatever I could with the knitting needles.

  5. Jo says:

Fingerless mitts!  I have seen both male and female characters with some great mitts on this show.

  6. Valerie says:

I would attempt to knit one of the gorgeous sweaters in my Ravelry queue, but the reality is I would probably start it, lose interest, and knit a cowl.

  7. Gail Wood says:

Cowls, fingerless mitts, arm warmers are all on my list of favorite things to knit.

  8. Katie Lynn says:

Can ‘all of the things’ be an option? Because that is the default setting for me. I must have something interesting on my needles at all times, and when I’m ending one project I begin to get antsy about sourcing the next one.

  9. Zoey Peacock says:

    Those arm
Warmers are seriously cute. No ponchos.

  10. Tess R. says:

My next knitting project is to make a slouchy hat to go with my lovely outlander style cowl. Just need to find something a novice like myself can complete.

  11. Jenny V says:

Definitely the arm warmers – swoon!

  12. DonnaMarie says:

The bff just told me that they won’t have heat in her building at work for another two weeks and has put in an order for sleeves and a cowl. So there’s that. My guild is always donating to Project Linus (http://www.projectlinus.org/about/). I think I can make some fine baby blankets with ebony needles.

  13. elizabeth davis says:

I think I’m going to make all the ladies in my family Claire’s cowl for Christmas. I made Kaluah’s The Gathering in uberyarn and it’s amazing.

  14. Tabs says:

My favorite things to knit are stuffed animals but I do those with small double points. So, I’d probably knit myself a cowl because I just moved to Wyoming and shit’s gonna get COLD soon.

  15. Helen says:

    Owl arm warmers!

  16. Alaina P says:

i don’ t know how to knit so i would start with something very simple! and then someday when my skills are amazing i’d make a cowl 😉

  17. Lisa Boike says:

Arm warmers and one of those beautiful cowls.

  18. Katrina says:

I covet those needles!  They’re gorgeous.  I would ask for circulars long enough to do magic loop, and I would finish up my Tortoise and Hare Gauntlets that I’ve been avoiding because I hate the needles I’m using.  http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/tortoise-and-hare-gauntlets

  19. Pamela says:

    Thanks Elyse! You’ve inspired me!!!

  20. CarolynB says:

I’ve got a whole list of people who want the Outlander Cowl, so I’ll need to get busy in time to have them all done for Christmas.

  21. Shira B says:

Ooh, slouchy hats. Yes. Like, three. Maybe four.

  22. Theresa says:

A scabbard in case any pesky English soldiers are around, but more likely fingerless mitts with the optional mitt flap – a bit more useful and super cute. 😉

  23. LMG says:

    Tell you what.

I’ll buy a copy of Outlander and those knitting needles for whoever will knit me a damn cowl or arm warmers. #crochetalltheway #weaverpower #knitnot #2manyhashtags

  24. Crysta says:

holy crap. I can’t decide which part of this giveaway excites me more: the book (for which I’m #598734601 in line at the library) or the needles! I’m on a Christmas knitting tear at the moment, which is great (especially for future me, who won’t be stressing out about presents in December) but if I win these needles, I’m totally making something gorgey for myself. 😀

  25. Val says:

I’d win these for my mom – she’s making the cowl as I type! Although sharing Elyse’s cowl blog with her was interesting… O_o 🙂

  26. Mara says:

Thank you for the giveaway!  I would knit a warm, cable-y giant sweater/wraparound thing for myself.  With moss stitch and cabling, because it’s awesomenand pebbly and just the right amount of texture.  Thank goodness for audiobooks and podcasts, or I’d never have time to knit!

  27. Vicki says:

I’ve been watching one of the secretaries knit shawls during meetings and a friend just knit the most amazing sweater with ribs and cables so I am being inspired to move beyond my usual scarves. Might try a sweater vest for winter.

  28. Jane says:

I knitted a pair of gloves with lots of cables and twisted stitches for my sister last Christmas. This winter I’d like to make a pair for me as well.

  29. Danielle says:

One of those fabulous cowls!!!! I’m already looking for a great yarn. I love Elyse’s better than the one in the show!  :0) I’m actually planning on the arm warmers next. Gotta keep those hands warm as you knit…

  30. Stacey says:

    A cowl and maybe some wristlets/arm warmers….

  31. ktr says:

I’d really want to try making tiny sweaters for my tiny stuffed animals but I think that’s beyond my skill level atm.

So mostly I’m here to say I actually started learning how to knit after I saw your Outlandish cowl post. I am on par with a newborn babe in terms of knitting skills and knowledges, but I’m having fun, it’s fun, so thank you!

  32. Adriene says:

I would knit the supercute Outlander cowl!!
As a beginner, it was a pattern that I completely understand…what a concept!

  33. Jennifer says:

It would have to be [Renfrew](http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/renfrew), the next thing on my Christmas list.

  34. ijinx says:

I’d knit everything. But mostly gloves and cowls and possibly one of those capelets from Outlander.

  35. Alessandra says:

I’d knit that cowl Claire’s got, even though I live in California. Damn it was beautiful and I don’t care how sweaty I’d get, I’d wear it around and speak to everyone like they were hot Scottish men, no problem. 😀

  36. BJ says:

Shetland lace shawl ~ or (if I am feeling ambitious) a Fair Isle hat.

I’ve done Shetland-style lace shawls before but somehow have missed doing any color work ~ although I’ve been to Fair Isle itself….

Claire and Jamie never make it to the northern islands (Shetland and Orkney), although the islands are full of standing stones and similar sites 😉

  37. Sara says:

I would knit the Blood Vow scarf my friend found on Ravelry, with my own family tartan though. http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/blood-vow

  38. Kate says:

    A sweater dress!

  39. LaineyT says:

Those arm warmers would make some great Christmas presents!

  40. Gloria S. says:

A gorgeous scarf for the hubby and cowl for myself!
