An Outlander and Knitting Giveaway!

Book Outlander Updated 10 October: We have a winner! The lucky recipient of a pair of Lantern Moon needles and a copy of Outlander is:

Jennifer in GA, who said that,  Outlander has pushed me to sign up for a knitting class so I can learn to knit ALL THE THINGS, but especially the fingerless glove/arm warmer thingies.”

Congratulations, Jennifer, and thank you to everyone who entered! Next week, we'll have another knitting pattern from Elyse, who is here for your winter knitting needs. Thank you for entering and for reading Smart Bitches!

To help you get through the rough months until Outlander resumes, and to assist in your Outlandish knitting endeavors, we're giving away a copy of the novel Outlander by Diana Gabaldon and a pair of ebony Lantern Moon knitting needles!

Ebony Knitting Needles

The winner can choose between straight or circular ebony needles by Lantern Moon–we'll even try to accommodate your needle size preference–and can also choose the format for their copy of Outlander. We're all about choices around here.

Just leave a comment below telling us what you'd knit with your bitchin' needles to enter.

The winner will be randomly selected on Friday 10 October 2014 at 12pm Eastern.

Standard disclaimers apply: Void where prohibited. Open to international residents where permitted by applicable law. Must be over 18 and ready to knit like the wind. No poking other people with the needles. No putting your eye out. The book Outlander does not contain pictures of shirtless Jamie, but the sex scenes may cause the vapors. I am not the boss of you. Charles is in charge.

I'm betting that many a knitted garment will be made during the Outlander hiatus, and we want you to be able to knit with us. So, what will it be? Arm warmers? Outlandish cowls? Share your plans with us!

    OUTLANDER

  6. Monica says:

I’d look like a fool wearing one of those knitted cowls in this warm NOLA weather, but it sure won’t stop me from knitting one.

  7. nina says:

I would finish the cowl I started last year. It looks Outlandish even though it isn’t.

  8. Shelley says:

OOOH. I already made my version of Claire’s cowl, but I absolutely want to do a shawl or fichu in her style now. Or maybe a snood of some sort. I’ve always wanted to try a snood.

  9. Megan says:

    cowls. Many cowls.

  10. Roberta says:

Oh – Outlander!!! I already miss you!
I would love to knit an “Outlander” style cowl with these awesome needles!

  11. Stephanie says:

A giant Reading Cocoon! It would have pockets for snacks, of course.

  12. Beth says:

Ooh, goody! I’d probably knit something Claire-inspired, like that beautiful cowl she wears or her fingerless gloves.

  13. Camille says:

All of the cowls/infinity scarves! I’ve also been planning on knitting a cabled afghan…my partner and I just bought our first house, and I love the idea of decorating it with something I made.

  14. Cassie says:

I bought this awesome super chunky earth tones yarn that I totally want to do in an Outlander-style cowl. I was thinking it might make a great Christmas gift for my sister!

  15. Ooh, given that I recently eloped in Scotland, I’d have to knit a tiny Jamie replica doll.

Nah, just kidding. More and more aran sweaters.

  16. Turophile says:

    armwarmers!!

  17. Janet S says:

The arm warmers are a must have item. The cowl is lovely too.

  18. Trish says:

arm warmers and more arm warmers!

  19. erinf1 says:

if I won, this would give me the final push to learn to knit! So I’d have to say, I’d probably do a lot of beginners stuff 🙂

  20. I totally bought that book recently so I’d give a copy to a friend. But oh, those needles. I want them bad.

Lately I’ve been knitting hats. Tons of hats. So yeah, I’d probably knit more hats. And I would love the needles with all my heart.

  21. Frauke says:

    A cowl!

Claire wears some freaking gorgeous cowls!!! I’d love to knit one of those!

  26. kristin says:

I just started knitting again, and am making sensible dishcloths for Christmas gifts, while eyeing up all theese beautiful arm warmers, which I covet. Yes, arm warmers ina nice soft grey, with a knitted braid as decoration, that is what I would knit.

  27. jules says:

I want one of those cowls so that would be the first thing that I would knit!

  28. Liz says:

I finally started to learn to knit after seeing all the gorgeous pictures here so I’d probably have to say Outlander cowl or maybe lots of Christmas mittens.

Working on a Claire cowl now. Would love to win!

  30. Kat says:

Multi colour hats and a lot of cowls!

  31. Sarah says:

A ninja turtles ski mask for my brother, and a TARDIS hat for myself.

  32. I’d quite like to knit a möbius cowl. I tried to begin one several days ago, using the double cast-on technique, but the cord (or whatever you call it) on my circular needles wasn’t long enough.

  33. Pansy Petal says:

I have this lovely sweater/coat lined up for my winter project this year.  It is an intarsia project with many colors.  It looks like a fun challenge to keep me occupied for the winter.

  34. I already have great needles in almost every size, so I’d give these to my daughter, along with the yarn to make the Outlandish cowl. She’s a beginner knitter, she looks fabulous in cowls, and those lovely Lantern Moon needles would appeal to her sense of style and lure her deeper into the knitter lifestyle.

  35. Ducky says:

I started to knit because of Elyse’s knitting posts here. I am going to be knitting a cowl and a shawl.

  36. Beth says:

I have a confession – I’ve never knitted.  *hanging head in shame*  However, with a cool pair of needles like that, there’s no end to the knitting heights I could reach!  I’d love to make some cool arm warmers like those in Outlander.

  37. Kim says:

I would totally knit a cabled scarf!

  38. ReneeG says:

I’m just finishing my first knitting class and have the yarn, etc. for my next (all thanks to Outlander knit passion), so I can use the needles.

In the space between classes, I’m planning to knit the cowl.  Yeah, baby!

  39. Faye says:

I’ve got the Outlandish patterns at the top of my list! Since we got dumped with snow this week, cozy projects and big hefty romances are most definitely in order.

  40. Abby says:

I have started teaching myself to knit because of all of these Outlander projects so I would make cowls, arm warmers, and more cowls and arm warmers!
