You did it! We figured this one out! It is a truth universally acknowledged (by me for certain) that the Bitchery pretty much knows everything, and really, it's true. Scroll down to see the solution for this HaBO - and many thanks!
This request is from Ijin, who is searching for a book from long ago, about a period of time even longer ago, with redheads:
This is about a book I've read long ago, maybe in the 1990s and unfortunately I don't know the author or the title – obv, otherwise I wouldn't be bothering the bitchery.
It's a medieval historical. The heroine and hero are both redheads and she seeks him out because her husband cannot have children.
After one night together, he is in love and she is gone.
So he leaves for the crusades (and doesn't like girls anymore because they are mean and break your heart.)
When he comes back, he becomes the new lord of the place where she lives. She is now a widow and has a red-haired son who happens to look quite like our hero, etc., etc., HEA.
PLEASE. It has been driving me mad. I need to know.
Those rescally redheads, always after your lucky charms, or your sperm, or maybe both. Do you recognize this book?
I really hope someone knows this, because as a mean redheaded woman, I must read this book!
I have no idea… but here are a few places to look when you have time 🙂
Paperback Swap list of medieval romances. (I have actually found a few older books I’ve been looking for by going through a PB search list)

I don’t think this is it but Red Adam’s Lady pops into my head. There was redheads galore (clue the title) but there was accidental forced of the two into matrimony, which is always good for a medieval laugh. I can’t remember about the crusades or even if it’s the correct time frame. (Just the red hair.)
The Crystal Heart by Katherine Deauxville. I looked up this book with a search engine. the plot seems pretty similar to what you dscribed though the synopsis givin gave no mention to redheads.
UPDATE: its definately The Crystal Heart. I looke up the book and the very first chapter mentions the Hero as ‘The one with the russet hair, the red head, etc. ect.’
YES! Thank you. It’s The Chrystal Heart. I’ve just bought the e-book and can’t wait to see whether it’s the old skool bullsh*t I so fondly remember 😀
