Andrea Kane’s Historical Backlist: A Giveaway

Andrea Kane - The Last Duke

Last week I received an email from Open Road Publishing telling me that Andrea Kane had published her historical romance backlist and that a whole pile of books were now available.

The problem: I had never read Andrea Kane. I mean, it's not like that's a hard problem, since I can go read one of her books, but there's fourteen of them.

So I asked on Twitter if anyone had read Andrea Kane's historicals, and which they recommended. Mad replied that she LOVED Andrea Kane's books, and was very excited to hear that they were all digital now (though alas, she is sad about their price). Mad's excitement about Kane's backlist being available digitally made me think that perhaps there were more readers who would like Kane – or readers who have been waiting, like Mad, for them to be available again.

I asked Mad what she liked about Kane's writing, and she said:

I discovered Andrea Kane right around the time that I first started reading romance books, which was in 1991, right after I had my oldest daughter. I remember zipping through her backlist and nagging my local book store to special order her books for me since I had bought everything they already had but was still missing some. I loved the fact that her heroine's were not spineless ninnies and they had brains where they could stand up against the heroes who were to die for but were at times clueless. Emotionally gripping and all that good stuff readers want when they discover a new author and want to glom everything they can by them.

It's been years since I read the print copies I kept. I do remember THE LAST DUKE, ECHOES IN THE MIST, THE MUSIC BOX, SAMANTHA, WISHES IN THE WIND as being very enjoyable.

So I went back to Open Road and asked if I could have a set of all of Andrea Kane's newly republished historical romances – 14 in all. Hot damn, they said yes, so here's a giveaway for the whole set. Yay!

Most of these books were published in the 90s, and I confess, some of the names make me laugh (Brandi? She's a fine girl. What a good wife she would be.) But I am SO CURIOUS about some of these books: cross dressing! High seas adventure! High seas adventure while cross dressing! And if Mad's recommendation based on the spinal strength of the heroine is true, I'm going to enjoy the crap out of some of these.

Which one would you want to read first?

  1. Jeanne Miro says:

I “found” Andrea back in the mid-1900’s when we were spending a lot of time driving from RI to SC to visit my younger son when he was in college at The Citadel.  Believe me anyone who has driven from New England to Charleston, SC down Route 95 knows that you’d better have a good book to read when you get stuck in miles of traffic at a dead stop around Washington, DC!

i loved them because they kept my attention so well that I didn’t even mind the crawling at 1 mile an hour before finally having an “open road” once we hit the other side of DC!

I missed reading The Last Duke so it’s great to know it’s available again!

  2. Catherine says:

Oh, these look awesome.  I think I’d read The Last Duke first (not last), but they all sound fantastic.

  3. Letothersrise says:

Probably Samantha, but The Theft is also rather tempting!

  4. Dagny says:

I’m afraid I’d need to employee the time-tested eenie-meenie-minie-moe method.

  5. They all sound fun but the swashbuckling The Black Diamond sounds like a good place to start

  6. Ajack0820 says:

I’ll take Echoes in the Mist with a side of The Last Duke if you please. Mama loves her some revenge. 🙂

  7. Anna N. says:

Great contest! I can’t decide which one I would like to read first, but I’m leaning towards the Last Duke.

  8. taurus says:

My choice would be The Last Duke.
I’ve read and enjoyed all her contemporary books – look forward to reading her historicals.

  9. chantalhab says:

The Gold Coin! I always read series in order.

  10. Kimberly Dacey says:

Oh!  Just found this site and already there is a totally awesome contest!
I have never read Kane before, but I would read The Music Box first.  I love to read about barristers and other guys who are not Earls, Dukes, or Marquis (Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Ms. Milan!)

  11. Sarah Fogle says:

The Gold Coin! That one caught my eye first.

  12. Sarah Fogle says:

sluethed it out on Amazon: Identical daughters of twin brothers.

I think twin cousin was less confusing!

  13. JoyceG says:

If my overwhelming need to read books in the order in which they were published can be temporarily squelched, I’d read Emerald Garden first – I love the Carly Kelly-esque theme of a soldier returning from battling The Short Guy.  Then again, an 1800’s Philadelphia setting is so unique, and I love American history, so it might have to be Masque of Betrayal, then I could work my way backwards through the list!

  14. Mary Jane says:

The Black Diamond looks fabulous…although they all look pretty fun!  How great would ilt be to have 14 books loaded and ready to read!

  15. Hard to chose, but I think I’d go with The Music Box.  I can’t believe that I’ve never read any of her books either, but now I’m interested.

  16. elmer12533 says:

I think I’d go with Echoes in the Mist.

  17. Statbolen says:

I’m not sure which one I’d read first, but I will probably read them all. Never heard of her before but will be looking into her now. Most def!

  18. Melissandre says:

I love both highwayman stories and “I’m forced to marry my sworn enemy!” stories, so it would be a toss-up between The Last Duke and Echoes in the Mist.

  19. Tam B. says:

The Silver Coin.  A twin cousin (?!?), an assassin and a hero who sounds like an aristocratic version of special forces – oh yeah count me in.

  20. b303tilly says:

I’d probably read Samantha or The Music Box first. It’s so hard to decide!

  21. Kaetrin says:

I’m tossing up between The Silver Coin and The Black Diamond.

  22. Ashlandbaby says:

The Silver Coin. Assassins make one of the best plot points in my opinion. Throw in twin cousins and I’m sure it will be quite entertaining.

  23. Zasia says:

I’d read The Gold Coin first, so I could follow up with The Silver Coin. Two of my all-time favorites. I must re-read them every six months. (Twin cousins are cousins who look like identical twins and share the ‘twin bond’ – don’t worry, she writes it well.)

  24. kimberly says:

Several sound good but Id start with The Last Duke.

  25. erin f says:

thanks for the fantastic giveaway! I’d start with the Gold Coin b/c it’s listed first and I’ve never read Andrea Kane before 🙂

  26. Sandypo says:

Masque of Betrayal sounds really good. I love books about sufragettes.

  27. Lynn Pauley says:

Andrea Kane’s books are great, although I must admit I enjoy her historicals more than I do her romantic suspense. I would re-read the Silver Coin/Gold Coin duo—one of my favorite sets from her.

  28. They all sound wonderfull. I would have to read Legacey of the Diamond. The mystery and events in the blurb have me wanting to know what happened.

  29. satilanna says:

A lot of these sound really good, especially the last three, but if I were to pick just one, I’d go for Dream Castle. 🙂

  30. They all sound wonderfull. I would have to read Legacey of the Diamond. The mystery and events in the blurb have me wanting to know what happened.

  31. Nicole says:

The Last Duke sounds good, but I rather want to read the Diamond ones. I think I’m in the mood for some high seas adventure! and diamonds and curses!

  32. Jenniloo says:

Would most enjoy The Black Diamond, I think. Thx!

  33. JaneDrew says:

I honestly have no idea; I think I’d just put them all in a box and draw one out without looking. I mean, how can one possibly choose?

  34. MinnieP says:

Although I’m usually a sucker for high seas shenanigans I have to say The Last Duke edges out the competition. Is the Tin Cup Bandit the be-masked love child of Kevin Costner and Burt Reynolds? It might explain why he keeps his feature hidden.

  35. St. Heather says:

All of these look intriguing! I think I’d start with The Last Duke, and The Theft would be a quick second..

  36. Atunah says:

Never read her, but they sound very interesting. I am a huge fan of historical romance anyway. I think I would start with “My heart’s desire”. Its got a ship, a stowaway heroine and they get stranded on an island. Sounds like an adventure to me.

  37. maered says:

I think Last Duke sounds like my kind of book.  Definitely start with that one.

  38. Kerrybwriting says:

The Last Duke. Why? Dennis Moore, of course! *hums* “He steals from the poor, and gives to the rich. Dum-dum-dum, stupid #=&$@!”

  39. Quiltlady says:

I will have to say I have never read her books before but I do love the older historicals. I think The Last Duke would be really good.

  40. joybane says:

I’d have to say I’d read Samantha first.  It combines the Romance and Age of Sail genres.  Can’t go wrong!
