Reader Thread: Whatcha Reading?

A reader named Sheri emailed me, asking if there were a place at SBTB she could talk to other romance readers about what she's reading, and know that folks would understand what she's talking about. Sheri wrote, I would love for there to be a place where all of us fans and romance lovers had a place to talk without a thread, just free form. I am sure there is a place like this somewhere on the internet but I …enjoy your website and its followers so much. I really feel like it would just be an added bonus. I am going to be starting the Evanovich  Plum Series and while I feel like this is a big undertaking, I am sure no one in my immediate circle would care. I am sure however that the bitchery would totally understand and give lots of humorous support.

The whole Plum series, all upteen books? Oh, yes, I know exactly what you're facing. The early books will make you laugh hard enough to consider using the bathroom, so be ye warned.

Sheri's email got me thinking, though, about having a Friday afternoon thread for y'all, just to talk about what you're reading right now, or planning to read this weekend. I love hearing about what you're reading when I post the Top 10 list, but perhaps a separate thread just for discussing what you're reading would be of interest. I'll tag them all “reader thread” for easy following.

So, whatcha reading?

Heather, you should read Bet Me, by Jennifer Crusie if you haven’t already- neither of the main characters want children and they stay consistent with that throughout the book. I found it refreshing, plus the whole book is really funny!

Over the last two weeks I’ve been reading A Lady Awakened by Cecilia Grant. I’m actually one of those people that finishes a book in a few hours and this book just isn’t going anywhere and I feel like I’m reading a text book because I can never get closer to the end. I don’t have a lot of DNFs but I am scared that this will be one of them. And sad because it started out so well.

I’m about to start Georgette Heyer: Biography of a Bestseller by Jennifer Kloester. I love Heyer’s Regency romances and am interested to learn more about her as a person and as a writer.

I just finished His at Night…for the second time…by Sherry Thomas.  I lead a monthly book club at Malaprop’s Bookstore in downtown Asheville, and His at Night is our read for January 24.  I always try to read the book-of-the-month twice, once as a reviewer and once strictly as a reader.  I know when I like it more the second time around that it’s a keeper.  Such was my experience with His at Night.  It’s delightful.

Also, I’m just finishing Shadowfever, the fifth and final book in Karen Marie Moning’s fever series.  I have a love/hate relationship with these books, but I CAN’T put them down.  For the ultimate hero, try Jericho Barrons.  He’s frustrating as hell, but oh, can he ever say the right things (on rare occasion).

I just finished this one too and it was Awesome – although I still think Annique’s story is my farvorite. I am so impressed with the consistentent awesomeness of Joanna Bourne’s writing and I can’t wait for more.

ohhh love Connie Willis! Although her other time travel novels are a darker flavor than To Say Nothing of the Dog, they are all excellent. I especially loved Doomsday Book and Mr. Dunworthy is one of my all time favorite characters

I’m about to start Real Men Will, the third book in Victoria Dahl’s Donovan Brothers series. I loved all of her first series, especially Talk me Down and am really enjoying this new set too.

I just finished Silent on the Moor.  I enjoyed it and I will pick up the next one (Dark Road to Darjeeling, I believe).  Despite the dark setting and heavy themes of the books, I think Lady Julia is so funny!  I enjoy the witty back and forth between her and Brisbane.  Although sometimes I just want to knock him over the head.

Reading the Psy-Changeling series by Nalini Singh…heavy going at times. On # 5 Hostage to Pleasure. I am anticipating Hawke’s story in Kiss of Snow. Taking breaks by rereading the Hunter’s Guild series, also by Singh. Lot of heavy stuff. Sometimes I lighten the load with some Sarah Morgan. But I need something light!!!

    Sci-fi: Rule 34 by Charles Stross (8 % read)
Fantasy: Nightrunner book 1, Luck in Shadows by Lynn Flewelling (25%)
Young Adult: Just read Graceling by Kristin Cashore next up The Heir of Night by Helen Lowe
Romance: next up The Greatest Knight by Elizabeth Chadwick
Audiobook: Ordeal by Innocence by Agatha Christie, read by Robin Bailey (1/6 done)

As you can see, I have a lot of reading going on at all times…

Susan – I’m sorry I missed this question when you asked it! The short answer is, I can’t put the replies directly beneath the comments. That is called “threading” the comments and the conversations splinter off into a million directions – and it’s very hard to read. I had it set up that way when the site relaunched after the redesign and it was terribly difficult to keep track of a conversation when the threads kept going off in all directions on a topic. I’m sorry.
