Hanukkah Day Seven: Book Buying is Fun!

The madness continues! Today's Hanukkah gift is another $100 gift certificate to the bookstore of your choice! That ought to buy enough books to last you about a week, right? Maybe 10 days?

Just leave a comment with a link or recipe for your favorite snack to eat while you're reading.

My favorite cookie: Chewy Chocolate Gingerbread Cookies, one of the “Best of” from Martha Stewart Living Magazine. A bit more labor intensive than other cookie recipes, but I make them every year as a gift for Hubby, at his request. They are amazing with milk or tea, and a book to read. I cannot wait to find out your favorite snack while reading! Share share!

All the delicious disclaimers apply. I am not being compensated for this giveaway. Void where prohibited, and must be over 18 eating bonbons to win. Happy Hanukkah and Merry Christmas and Happy Week Before New Year's! Let's snack!

I used to love my Moms butter cookies which we made for our whole family! We all spent Christmas eve at my Italian granma’s with her 7 sons and families! My Mom had an old squeeze machine that made all kinds of Xmas shapes! I always looked forward to baking with my Mom who was a great cook! I am a terrible baker and I have yet to taste a cookie as goo as hers! Once in awhile I’ll pass cookies baking and think of her and all the happy memories of those days spending time together, just she and I! A lot of family is gone but the memories are still there!

Hmmm… if I’m in a salty mood, then my favorite would be popcorn (made the old-fashioned way on the stove) with lots of butter and salt.  If I’m in a sweet mood, then it would be gingerbread cookies (recipe from a book, no link) that are covered in tons of icing.

  20. Meg says:

I get my calories in liquid form when I’m reading… so Red Bull or Jack Daniels Downhome Punch, depending on whether my book is naughty or nice.  🙂

  24. My favorite snack while reading is microwave popcorn with old bay seasoning on top. No link need for that one. Easy as pie. Well easier really.

  25. HollieJollie says:

I enjoy some hot tea with honey in the winter. Not to exciting but hopefully whatever I’m reading is.

  26. Dwndrgn says:

I try not to snack while reading because finding the bottom of the bag in the middle of a good scene is just not fun.  Not only am I distracted from a good scene by the dismay of NO MORE SNACKS but the despair of I ATE THE WHOLE THING.  AGAIN.

But, when I do indulge, it tends to be salty snacks like chips or nuts or popcorn.  I don’t dare go near cookies while reading.  Recently I ended up reading at the dinner table after I had finished eating and there was a platter of cookies and other delights my sis in law had made for us for the holidays and on there were a bunch of chocolate covered pretzels on it too, which are of my favorite things and do you know?  I have no idea where they all went!  Some gremlin must have stolen them or something!

Can I just say that I am loving all the recipes you guys are posting – I’m going to try out some new snacks soon!!!

My favorite snack is Chex Mix (Bold Version, add a can of Smokehouse Almonds).  Alas, this is also a food over which I have No Control—I could eat a whole bowl in one reading session!  So I only have it in the house over Christmas (when I have no time to read!)

  32. Jane Peach says:

My favorite snack for reading is popcorn.  I use a crank handled popper on the stovetop.  Much tastier than microwaved and no scary chemical ingredient list.  Then I melt a little butter and honey together to drizzle over the top.  Yum – salty, sweet and crunchy.  Excuse me, I’ve got to go into the kitchen now…

  33. Hmm. I don’t usually snack while reading. I read a lot of library books so I don’t want to spill on them.
My roomie and I are planning on making these: http://www.marthastewart.com/3… for a late Christmas snack, though.

  34. Aralira says:

This is one of my favorites.

    Puppy Chow
    Ingredients:

    1/2 cup peanut butter
    1/4 cup butter
    1 cup chocolate chips
    1/2 teaspoon vanilla
9 cups Crispix cereal (any flavor)
    3 cups powdered sugar

    Instructions:

    1. Combine peanut butter, butter and chocolate chips in a microwave safe bowl.

    2. Microwave for one minute then stir to blend all ingredients thoroughly. Add 1/2 teaspoon vanilla. Stir well.

    3. Place the 9 cups of Crispix cereal in a very large bowl.

    4. Pour the peanut butter-chocolate mixture over the cereal and toss evenly, making sure all the cereal gets a good covering.

    5. Place the powdered sugar in a large zip-lock type plastic bag.

    6. Add the peanut butter-chocolate cereal mixture to the bag, leaving enough room for the puppy chow to be shaken (you may have to divide the mixture into smaller batches, coating one batch at a time).

    7. Shake the bag vigorously to evenly coat each piece of the puppy chow with powdered sugar.

    8. Once the mixture is fully coated, place in a large serving bowl.

    9. Coat any additional pieces by shaking the mixture in the powdered sugar filled bag.  Add powdered sugar to the bag as needed until all the mixture is coated.

I love Ben & Jerry’s peach cobbler or late night snack. But usually I get really engrossed in my book and the ice cream ends up melting.

  39. Jen McKernan says:

My favorite thing while reading is a cup of coffee!  If any of you other readers have a Keurig, I highly recommend the Golden French Toast coffee cups!!
