Hanukkah Day Seven: Book Buying is Fun!

The madness continues! Today's Hanukkah gift is another $100 gift certificate to the bookstore of your choice! That ought to buy enough books to last you about a week, right? Maybe 10 days?

Just leave a comment with a link or recipe for your favorite snack to eat while you're reading.

My favorite cookie: Chewy Chocolate Gingerbread Cookies, one of the “Best of” from Martha Stewart Living Magazine. A bit more labor intensive than other cookie recipes, but I make them every year as a gift for Hubby, at his request. They are amazing with milk or tea, and a book to read. I cannot wait to find out your favorite snack while reading! Share share!

All the delicious disclaimers apply. I am not being compensated for this giveaway. Void where prohibited, and must be over 18 eating bonbons to win. Happy Hanukkah and Merry Christmas and Happy Week Before New Year's! Let's snack!

  1. I usually opt for a liquid snack, and my favorite is a mimosa. (The recipe is simple: champagne + orange juice.)

I swear, I make these and then devour them all almost immediately before I even manage to wrap the caramels!

In general, I prefer hot drinks to food while I’m reading, so you can often find me with a cup of coffee or a pot of tea and a book in my hands. However, I do very much enjoy reading in the mornings while eating breakfast, so here is a recipe for my mother’s famous Sticky Bun French Toast:

    Ingredients
About 1/4 cup (1/8 lb.) butter or margarine
1 sourdough baguette (8 oz.), cut diagonally in 1-inch-thick slices
    5 large eggs
    1 cup half-and-half (light cream)
    1 cup milk
    1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
    1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
    1 tablespoon light corn syrup
1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts

    Preparation
    1. Lightly butter a 9- by 13-inch pan. Lay baguette slices on a cut side in a single layer in pan, squeezing if needed to make them fit. In a blender or in a bowl with a whisk, whirl or beat eggs, half-and-half, milk, nutmeg, cinnamon, and vanilla to blend well. Pour egg mixture over bread to moisten evenly. Cover and refrigerate at least 8 or up to 24 hours.
    2. In a 1- to 2-quart pan over medium heat, stir 1/4 cup butter with brown sugar, corn syrup, and pecans until butter melts. Uncover bread mixture and spread slices evenly with the butter mixture, using all of it.
    3. Bake, uncovered, in a 350° oven until topping is browned and bubbly, about 45 minutes. Scoop portions into bowls.

  7. Amy B. says:

At this time of the year I make marshmallows to put in hot chocolate. They’re actually really easy, if you have a candy thermometer.

Bloom three packages of gelatin in a bowl.
Melt 1 cup of corn syrup and 1 1/2 cup sugar in a saucepan. Heat to 240 degrees F. Remove from heat and add to the gelatin. Beat for about 8 minutes, or until glossy and thick. Add teaspoon of vanilla, and a teaspoon of cinnamon extract. Pour into pan that has been buttered and liberally dusted with a half and half mixture of powdered sugar and cornstarch. Smooth out the marshmallow mixture and let cure for at least an hour. Dust top with more of the powdered sugar/cornstarch mixture, cut into pieces with a pizza cutter, roll individual marshmallows in the powdered sugar mixture, or you can also use a mixture of powdered sugar and cocoa. Enjoy in hot chocolate, or just on their own. These are much better than the marshmallows that come in a bag!

I’m going to have to join the liquid snackers!  I like a nice bottle of wine with an all day reading session.  And some cats.  Nothing screams spinster like smutty books, wine and cats.

  20. I love when I need a snack while eating, it usually means I don’t wanna put down my book long enough to eat.

That being said. I usually go for popcorn. It sometimes leaves greasy stains but after having dropped a glass of apple-soda on my HP1 that one time, I don’t mind the grease so much.

Mine isn’t something I actually snack on while reading, because I try not to mindlessly eat. BUT if I WERE to eat something (and someone else had made it) then I would be eating these: http://www.cookingwithk.net/20…
Homemade almond joys! They are easily made gluten free, so I made some for Christmas this year as I have several family members who are GF. They were delicious. My mouth is watering just thinking about them…

If I must I usually go for ketchup chips but normally there is no snacking.  It takes me away from my book and it also gets greasy fingerprints on the ereader and that just won’t do.

  25. Josie MacGregor says:

Mine is hands down Chocolate crinkles, except I make the old fashioned version that uses shortening instead of vegetable oil (I got the recipe from my mom’s old Better Homes and Gardens cookbook, that she’s had longer than she’s had me).

    1/2 cup shortening
    1 2/3 cups sugar
    2 teaspoons vanilla
    2 eggs
    2 squares baking chocolate, melted
    2 cups flour
    2 teaspoons baking powder
    1/3 cup milk
    confectioner’s sugar

Cream sugars, shortening and vanilla. Add eggs and beat in well. Beat in chocolate. Sift together dry ingredients, blend into creamed mixture alternately with milk. Chill 3-4 hours (or half that time in the freezer). Form into 1” balls and roll in confectioner’s sugar. Place on greased cookie sheet 2” apart. Bake at 350 degrees about 15 minutes. Cool slightly before removing from pan.

Mine doesn’t have a recipe.  (I mean, unless you make your own salad dressing, in which case, good on you, you are WAY less lazy than me!)

Baby carrots, broccoli, cauliflower and ranch dressing for dip.  Sometimes, I even throw some cheddar on the plate. nom nom nom.

Actually, I only eat meals while I read.  Otherwise, it’s just water or coffee.  But here’s a family fav for those of you who don’t go orgasmic over chocolate.

    Apple Butter Bars

    1 1/4 c. flour
    1 c. brown sugar, packed
    I tsp. cinnamon (opt.)
3/4 c. butter, cut in pieces
    1 1/4 c. dry oatmeal
3/4 c.  apple butter, preferably homemade

    oven: 350 degrees

Mix flour, sugar, & cinnamon in lg. bowl.  Using pastry blender or two knives, cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.  Stir in oatmeal.  Press 1/2 (~2 1/4 c.) firmly in 8” sq. pan.  Gently spread apple butter within 1/2” of edges.  Sprinkle on remaining oatmeal mixture & press firmly but carefully.  Bake at 350 degrees until light brown.  Cut in 2″X2” or 1″x4” bars.

My daughters and the neighbor kids adored these back in the day.

Made the following for nontraditional Christmas dessert & would totally eat it while reading: http://www.epicurious.com/reci…

    Enjoy!

  37. Kerry D. says:

I had to think about this. The answer is probably “anything or nothing”. Once I’m reading, if there’s food about I’ll absently mindedly grab and eat while deep in the book. If there isn’t, I’ll fail to notice.

But I’m going to say crackers and cheese. Especially Meal Mates (http://www.griffins.co.nz/by-n… and a nice camembert.

  38. What a droolable conversation and giveaway!!

My favorite reading snack has to be chocolate. Spending time alone with a good book deserves a little decadence.

  39. Willaful says:

I always read while I eat, so don’t have a particular favorite book-snack. My current favorite snack in general is soy-sauce flavored sprouted almonds. I don’t know how to make ‘em though.

  40. Patricia M. says:

Sorry, my weight got out of control so now I have to snack on carrot sticks.
