The madness continues! Today's Hanukkah gift is another $100 gift certificate to the bookstore of your choice! That ought to buy enough books to last you about a week, right? Maybe 10 days?
Just leave a comment with a link or recipe for your favorite snack to eat while you're reading.
My favorite cookie: Chewy Chocolate Gingerbread Cookies, one of the “Best of” from Martha Stewart Living Magazine. A bit more labor intensive than other cookie recipes, but I make them every year as a gift for Hubby, at his request. They are amazing with milk or tea, and a book to read. I cannot wait to find out your favorite snack while reading! Share share!

Happy Hanukkah and Merry Christmas and Happy Week Before New Year's! Let's snack!

Dark chocolate dipped gluten-free pretzels. Salty and sweet and perfect!
Anything chocolate and gallons of coffee. But those are my must haves for every occasion. lol
Love Pecan pralines. http://www.foodnetwork.com/rec…
I’m not much of a sweets person, so my favorite snack is the old, salty standby: Chex Mix! http://www.chex.com/Recipes/Re…
Cheetos. Although then, of course, I leave little orange fingerprints all over the pages.
I try not to eat while I’m reading.
Tea and McVitie’s digestive biscuits. I admire those of you who read without snacking. It’s almost impossible for me to drink a cup of tea without looking around for something to read.
I love to bake and, sadly for my waistline, love to snack, but I don’t normally snack while I read. I think my early training makes me too worried about getting schmutz on the book. I do like a good cup for tea or cocoa while reading on a winter day.
Does wine count as a snack? No? Then wine and chocolate, that counts, right? Haha!
Marbled Banana Bread is my new favorite snack… http://www.theppk.com/2011/11/… It’s very yummy and pretty low in fat even.
Amish cream pie….here’s my grandmother’s recipe. It’s like creme brule (sp?) in a pie but thicker and more decadent without the crisp crust (but just as yummy). http://www.theresameyers.com/b…
I like red pepper hummus and pita chips.
This time of year, I indulge in a simple treat my mother has made for years. Melt 3 cups of chocolate chips. Mix in 2 cups of Golden Grahams cereal and a cup of salted peanuts. Spread the mixture on a wax paper-covered cookie sheet and chill in the refrigerator for four hours. Cut into small bars and enjoy!
I don’t normally snack while reading, but my favorite treat while settling in for a long read is to have coffee with half & half; or if I’ve been out to pick up an extra-large Marble Mocha (half white, half milk chocolate) with whole milk, no foam & whipped cream.
Salmiakki, otherwise known as salty liquorice. I’m not too particular about the brand. And now I want some.

I’m simple – bread and cheese snacks for me.
I don’t like to snack on food when I read, though will sip at a good cup of tea, or my favorite treat, Steamed Milk with a double bergamot Earl Grey and a shot of vanillla syrup.
chocolate. not so much the fancy bonbons, but something like M&Ms which won’t get my e-reader or paper books sticky.
When I’m reading and have the yen for something sweet, I love Hershey Dark Chocolate Miniatures with a cup of hot tea or coffee. Yum!
“Green dip” served with Stacy’s Simply Naked pita chips. YUM
Dip recipe: http://allrecipes.com/personal…
Hot chocolate with hazelnut piroulines for dipping. Yum!
I’m on a healthy eating regime because of health/weight issues so if I have to snack while reading I stick to fruit or a measured amount of nuts.
CHEX MIX PUPPY CHOW
9 cup Chex
1 cup chocolate chips
1/2 cup peanut butter
1/4 cup butter
1/4 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cup powdered sugar
Put cereal in large bowl. Melt chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla.
Pour over Chex cereal, put into a large plastic bag with powdered sugar and shake well to coat.
Spread mixture evenly on wax paper and allow to cool.
Yummy!
I don’t usually eat while I read, although sometimes I will dip into my tub of Target Monster Mix trail mix. But I do usually have a cup of tea (currently Celestial Seasonings’ Nutcracker Sweet—tis the season!) or cocoa. Try this recipe for Quick Mexican Cocoa: Pour 1 pkg instant cocoa in mug, add 1/2 tsp cinnamon and 2 tsp French Vanilla nondairy coffee creamer and mix well. Add hot water, and voila! Goes real well with a hot love scene! ๐ My kids also like to put about a 1” piece of candy cane or one of those round peppermint candies in the bottom of the cup before pouring in the cocoa and hot water. Just stir and let it melt for a yummy holiday treat.
My new favorite cookie: http://www.howsweeteats.com/20…
How can a cookie within a cookie (especially when one of them is an Oreo) be bad?
This recipe for almond roca is awesome and easy. (Although you must remember to lick your fingers before turning pages) http://www.recipegirl.com/2011…
I don’t have a favorite snack…but I do remember when I was a kid, my mom would give us a day to play hooky (we were home-schooled, so those days were actually sanctioned!) and we would eat Brunswick stew for lunch and all 3 of us would read at the table ๐ (Um, the 3rd person in question is my brother!) Good memories ๐
I like Scottish Shortbread Cookies with milk (or orange spiced tea) which are *terrible* for you but tasty.
Here’s a recipe for them:
http://allrecipes.com/recipe/s…
Currently, Pumpkin Chocolate Chip muffins. Easy Peasy:
15 oz can of pumpkin
1 box of spice cake mix
1 bag of chocolate chips
mix up, dollop into muffin pan
350 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes
I love pistachio nuts! And for a sweet this year I made white chocolate cranberry pistachio bark (candy). I used the easy microwave method to melt/temper Ghirardelli white choc chips, added the nuts and craisens and then also sprinkled some red sea salt on top so it came out sweet/salty – yum!
Cheetos just popped into my head… ๐
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C…
Popcorn with lots of butter, salt and dairymilk squares. It’s my one big vice when sitting reading or watching tv.
Usually chips or Doritos if I snack but most of the time I don’t snack while reading—hate smears on the e-reader!
My favorite reading snack this time of year? Clementines. Only thing you have to do is prepare a damp towel for your fingers so the pages (or the buttons) don’t get sticky.
My favorite reading snack are sour Jelly Bellies. Easy to snag a handful, and I don’t have to worry about greasy finger marks on the book pages.
Lately I’ve been snacking on Oreo truffles:
http://allrecipes.com/recipe/e…
They are way trashier than any of my books! ๐
I don’t know if I necessarily need a recipe but at this time of year, I love reading in front of the fire hazard… erm Christmas tree with a cup of hot chocolate. The best kind is made with milk and little marshmallows. I am actually quite partial to the peppermint kind as well ๐
I try not to eat anything oily while I read. My fave snack is cereal ๐ Dry or with milk, it always makes me happy!!
I’d eat these chocolate chip cookies while reading if my dream of them never staying on my butt and hips came true. ๐ (I’d eat pizza and donuts on that dream day, too.)

But in real life, I just drink coffee or tea or plain ol’ water.
I’m with J.C.- I go for tea or coffee. My favorite tea at the moment is a special blend of rooibos. Rooibos is native to South Africa, is naturally decaf, has lots of healthy bits (see wikipedia), and tastes sort of like a combo between black tea and chai. Yummy!
