Hanukkah, Day Eight - More Touching Reading!

Book Cover

It's the last day of Hanukkah, and the last day of our week of giveaways. WOO! Are you a little overwhelmed by the nonstop partay? I am!

The final gift I have for you is an 8GB black iPod Touch, suitable for reading many, many things, like books! Yay books!

To enter, just leave a comment and tell me the best book you read this year. Easy, huh? Just one book. Heh heh. If you're like me, this type of question makes your brain go all jittery.

No, it does not have to have been published in 2011. It could be from 1911 if you'd like, or earlier!

Standard disclaimers apply: I am not being compensated for this giveaway. In other words, I have not been paid (*snrk*) an 'insertion fee' (splutter) for this promotion. (Oh, gosh, few things make me snortlaugh like the term “insertion fee.”) Your mileage may vary. Void where prohibited. Open to those 18 years of age and older driving tractor trailers with the windows down. International entries welcome. Word hard at what you do and be kind.

So let's build an almighty best-of list, and share the good reading we've enjoyed. Happy Hanukkah, and Happy Holidays to everyone!

Shadowfever by the amazing Karen Marie Moning. I actually read the whole series this year and it was a crazy roller coaster ride AND I FLOVED IT!!

  3. clynn886 says:

The best book I read this year was The Art of Fielding, by Chad Harbach.

  4. Ashley says:

I was so late in this series, but I breezed through The Hunger Games series in three days this year. The second and third books were just okay, but the first one was AH-MAH-ZING.

  5. sharivan says:

I loved Deadline, by Mira Grant. Zombies AND political intrigue? Swoon.

  6. Vinessa says:

A really fascinating new book I read for school was “Everything is Miscellaneous” by David Weinberger. But, I always love rereading “The Viscount who loved me” by Julia Quinn every once in a while!

  7. Audra says:

The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie by Jenifer Ashley – The best

  8. Amandavmartin says:

The best book I read the year was Mudbound by Hillary Jordan

  9. DreadPirateRachel says:

It’s hard for me to pick just one because I tend to categorize my reading into two options: scholastic and pleasure. However, there is significant overlap because I’m an English major, so my favorite book that I read for scholastic purposes this year was “Villette” by Charlotte Bronte, while my favorite book that I read for pleasure was Courtney Milan’s “Unveiled,” which was the first book to ever make me 1) cry, and 2) write a fan letter to the author.

  10. MD_uk says:

Lots of great reads this year 😉 I’d go for Ilona Andrews “On the Edge” – totally loved it.

  11. Tracy Faul says:

Best book of the year for me? The Five Little Peppers and How They Grew by Margaret Sidney. It’s my go-to, life has gone to shit but there’s HOPE book for whenever things get to be too much for me, which they have done and are continuing to do.

  12. miz_geek says:

    Special Delivery by Heidi Cullinan.

  13. Em says:

The Other Guy’s Bride by Connie Brockway

When she’s good, she’s very very good.

  14. Atunah says:

Its causing me physical pain to pick just one 🙂

What I did for a Duke – Julie Anne Long

  15. trader says:

    Shadowfever by Karen Marie Moning..

  16. Sarah A-B says:

I loved Bad Boys Do by Victoria Dahl.
I loved lots of books this year but that first came to mind.
Please forgive lack of formatting—I so want to win this that I’m writing this on my DROID which is not the easiest to type on 🙂

  17. Katie Dancer says:

Suzanne Brockmann’s Heart Throb just squeaked past Jennifer Crusie’s Bet Me.  Gee, this was tough, even using a spread sheet of books read.

  18. Heather H says:

    Hmmm.

One Hundred Thousand Kingdoms. NK Jemison (I hope I spelled that right.)

  19. shhbabe says:

The best book I read this year was an anthology, Welcome to Bordertown, ed. Ellen Kushner. It’s a continuation of the shared-world series (different authors writing in the same setting, sometimes sharing characters) that hadn’t had a new story for 13 years. With most anthologies, I’ll skip around, read the stories out of order, but with this one, I read straight through, couldn’t put it down and was sad when I finished the last story. Sad that there wasn’t more.

If anthologies don’t count, then the best is probably tied between the Hunger Games finale, Mockingjay (Suzanne Collins), a brutal but fitting culmination of the series, and The Dark Tide (Josh Lanyon), #5 in the Adrien English mystery and m/m romance series. In both series I enjoyed the main characters’ perspectives, though they were removed from my own (and vastly removed from each others’), and both had me in tears a few times before the end.

  20. Lorisusangreen says:

Silk is for Seduction by Loretta Chase. Such a brilliant book.  But the best? That’s hard…

I think the best book I read was a short story my daughter wrote about getting her hair cut. It was illustrated and humorous and I felt like I was there *g*.

  21. Diana P. says:

The one that’s currently in my mind is Unveiled by Courtney Milan. I love how the hero is actually somewhat understanding and doesn’t go off and act mopey/emo when she explains her secret.

  22. Stelly says:

Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin.  My little brother got the first four books in the series for Christmas and I’ve been devouring them.

  23. maered says:

I loved Archangel’s Blade by Nalini Singh.  Definitely a keeper.

  24. Chantal H says:

A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness. Easily the best book I’ve read all year, although I loved Courtney Milan’s Unlocked, Unraveled, etc. too. A Discovery of Witches blends together history, romance, paranormal and science in a way that’s absolutely breathtaking.

  25. Maya S says:

“A Storm of Swords.” I spent 1000 pages reading with my jaw dropped.

  26. Katie says:

The one that’s really sticking with me is Darkfever by Karen Moning. I can’t stop thinking about how good the whole series was!

  27. Sola says:

I’m reading To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis right now, and it’s fabulous and going on my favorites list.

  28. SheliaG says:

The best book I read this year is Lethal by Sandra Brown. After reading this book, I plan on getting more of her books. I know its a shame that this was my first Sandra Brown book in years.

  29. Diane says:

Ok, tough one.  Having recently become enamored of some YA books, I would have to say that Fifty Shades of Grey and Beautiful Disaster are both close to the top. Tairen Soul series is up there too.

  30. Andrea says:

Hmm, one book.  Uhoh. Off the top of my head, I would have to say…ehm… 😉 I discovered the Cut and Run series by Abigail Roux and Madeleine Urban which I really really like.  But then there are many more books that I really liked. So, I will have to go with Hawk of May by Gillian Bradshaw. I just got it a couple of weeks ago as an ebook. I used to get it regularly from the library but since it is now available digitally I decided to finally get it.

  31. mojostables says:

This year my favorite books included Julie Anne Long’s What I Did For a Duke, Susanna Kearsley’s The Winter Sea, and Joanna Bourne’s Forbidden Rose

  32. Kristin says:

I really enjoyed Shannon Stacey’s “Yours to Keep”

  33. Sally says:

Slave to Sensation by Nalini Singh.  I was moved to check the series out by some comments here and now they’re catnip for me.

  34. maris41 says:

The best I’ve read: Time Traveller’s Guide to Medieval England by Ian Mortimer.  Yes, I AM a history nerd. It was my husband’s Valentines gift to me – totally romantic because it shows how much he ‘gets’ me 🙂

  35. Andi Lea says:

    Jordan Castillo Price’s GhosTV

  36. Yikes! hard question…I enjoyed Torn by friend and fellow writer Erica O’Rourke, I usually don’t read YA, but I loved her story and am really looking forward to the other two books in the trilogy. I’d have to say I enjoyed the new Windham series from Grace Burrowes – I’ve read the Heir and The Soldier, and need to start Virtuoso!

  37. Tara Stearns says:

I’ve read a lot of good books this year.  But the best one has to be Until There Was You by Kristan Higgins.

  38. It would probably be a toss-up between Daughter of Smoke and Bone and The Night Circus.

  39. Jbriggs60 says:

Just one? Sheesh, now that’s a tall order. umm…lets see. I guess the book I liked the most is a toss up between Explosive Eighteen and New York to Dallas.

  40. NikiN says:

It’s a tie between Seanan McGuire’s fifth Toby Daye book, One Salt Sea, and Ilona Andrews’s fifth Kate Daniels book, Magic Slays.  I’ve just discovered McGuire’s Livejournal page and have a bit of a fangirl crush on her right now, so I might be temporarily biased….
