Hanukkah, Day Eight - More Touching Reading!

Book Cover

It's the last day of Hanukkah, and the last day of our week of giveaways. WOO! Are you a little overwhelmed by the nonstop partay? I am!

The final gift I have for you is an 8GB black iPod Touch, suitable for reading many, many things, like books! Yay books!

To enter, just leave a comment and tell me the best book you read this year. Easy, huh? Just one book. Heh heh. If you're like me, this type of question makes your brain go all jittery.

No, it does not have to have been published in 2011. It could be from 1911 if you'd like, or earlier!

Standard disclaimers apply: I am not being compensated for this giveaway. In other words, I have not been paid (*snrk*) an 'insertion fee' (splutter) for this promotion. (Oh, gosh, few things make me snortlaugh like the term “insertion fee.”) Your mileage may vary. Void where prohibited. Open to those 18 years of age and older driving tractor trailers with the windows down. International entries welcome. Word hard at what you do and be kind.

So let's build an almighty best-of list, and share the good reading we've enjoyed. Happy Hanukkah, and Happy Holidays to everyone!

  1. Samantha says:

And One More Thing by Molly Harper.  I expected not to like it as much as her vampire books, but ended up liking it more!

  2. Crystal Broyles says:

Kiss of Snow by Nalini Singh.

  3. Renda says:

    Attachments

    By Rainbow Rowell.

  4. Melissandre says:

The Curse of Chalion by Lois McMaster Bujold.  Thank you, all smart bitches, for turning me on to her (especially since I was convinced I had already read one of her books and hated it, which turned out not to be true).

  5. Melissandre says:

The Curse of Chalion by Lois McMaster Bujold.  Thank you, all smart bitches, for turning me on to her (especially since I was convinced I had read one of her books and hated it, which turned out not to be true).

  6. Carrie Z says:

My favorite of the year was New York to Dallas!

  7. Lakaribane says:

Tough question but I discovered Kate Noble this year and The Summer of You, so emotional. And then I glommed Tessa Dare (thanks to my friends H. and S.) and I like her too!

  8. Anna says:

Not a romance, but Mira Grant’s Feed blew my mind this year.  It took weeks for anything else I read after that to get a fair shake.

  9. Lindleepw says:

This is a mean, mean question. I think I’ll just say the book I’ve most recently liked, which is Devil’s Bride by Stephanie Laurens.

  10. Katie MacAlister’s “It’s All Greek to Me”.  I love everything she’s written.

  11. AmberMc says:

Silver Borne by Patricia Briggs. I finally read the Mercy series this year, and of all of them, this was my favorite.

  12. PSJ says:

I have read and forgotten lots of books this year… the one I’ve reread the most is To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis. Um, and Married by Morning (Lisa Kleypas). And it’s possible that I consult “How to Cook Everything” at least once a week…

  13. Vandy Jones says:

I absolutely loved Zoe Archer’s Scoundrel.  The rest of the series was great but that one was by far my favorite.

  14. Amy says:

Welcome to Temptation by Jennifer Crusie.  It is a book I go back to every couple of months – I just love it!

  15. LSUReader says:

Julie Anne Long’s What I Did for a Duke was my favorite read this year.

Thanks for all the wonderful giveaways. Happy Holidays!

  16. Kristina says:

My favorite was Shadowfever – Karen Marie Moning. 2nd would be Curio – Cara McKenna.

  17. Klcoppock says:

Notorious Pleasures by Elizabeth Hoyt, followed closely by Nalini Singh’s Archangel’s Blade & Joanna Bourne’s The Black Hawk.

  18. Ellie Ashe says:

So many great suggestions in these comments. I suspect my holiday gift card will be put to good use today!
My favorite book this year was The Restorer by Amanda Stevens, followed closely by my favorite audiobook, A Field of Darkness by Cornelia Read. Thankfully, both are the first books in a series, so I am looking forward to more goodness.

  19. Beckyroo17 says:

This is difficult.  I am going to go with The Distant Hours by Kate Morton.  It was a great companion read with The Proud Tower by Barbara W. Tuchman and The Children’s Book by A.S. Byatt!

  20. j.c. says:

Behemoth by Scott Westerfeld. Just a really fun read.

  21. ClaudiaGC says:

I found a new-to-me contemporary authorthis year. I’ve read Black Ties and Lullabies by Jane Graves and loved it! Gloomed her whole backlist.

  22. SueX says:

The Hunger Games series. I know, technically it’s three books, but they’re the best books I’ve read all year, loved them.

  23. Camilla says:

loved Fifty Shades of Gray and Fifty Shades Darker……..found them from reviews, and really liked them. they reminded me a little bit of Butterfly Tattoo, don’t know why! I think the damaged/hurt theme…

  24. Delphia2000 says:

My best book of the year is “A Discovery of Witches” by Deborah Harkness. It was everything Twilight should have been and more.

  25. Lee says:

My favorite this year was Courtney Milan’s Unveiled. Ash – YUM! My son has downloaded Courtney’s short story Unlocked to HIS ipod for me to read. I’m sure he would prefer that I have my own.

  26. Jo O says:

Hunt the Moon – Karen Chance. I always enjoy the books in this series better on rereading.

  27. srs9 says:

Wolf Hall! I absolutely loved it and cannot wait for the sequel.

  28. My favorite book that I read this year was a YA title.  The Gossamer Sphere by Melissa Conway.  I actually read 3 of her books & they were all good.

  29. Ke Martin says:

“Is everyone getting together without me?”. I needed to laugh.

  30. TheDuchess says:

What I Did For a Duke, by Julie Anne Long. I just couldn’t get over how amazing it was.

  31. Julia Broadbooks says:

Probably Dragon Bound by Thea Harrison, although I liked Carolyn Crane’s Disilluinists novella well enough to seek out her back list and Candace Hern’s Regency books. I love when I pick up a new author expecting to be amused and end up just loving the book enough to go back for more.

  32. g_lavo says:

It has to be Frederica for me. I just discovered Heyer this year and I have now read Frederica 3 times. I love that book!

  33. Dwndrgn says:

I read over 230 books this year.  You want just one name???  Ok, since I have too many to choose from, I’ll give you my favorite book in a few different genres:

Best book by an author you probably don’t know:
Under Witch Aura by Maria E. Schneider
(this is the sequel to Under Witch Moon) and it is a paranormal romance mystery.  Very well written with characters I cared about and wanted to know more of.

The best historical romance I read was Eloisa James’ Desperate Duchesses because it made me laugh all the way through and I read it during a particularly trying time.

The best fantasy was Patrick Rothfuss’ Wise Man’s Fear

The best YA was DM Cornish’s Monster Blood Tattoo

Ok, I’ll stop there before I bore you all.

  34. Bungluna says:

    Only one?  Let’s see…

“Cryoburn” by Lois MacMaster Bujold.  No, “Ghost Story” by Jim Butcher.  No no, “Ghost Ship” by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller.  No no no, “New York to Dallas” by JD Robb.  I’m giving myself a headache.

  35. Debbie says:

I really liked Eloisa James’ Beauty and the Beast book—thats a definite reread for me

  36. Colleen says:

very tough question but I’m going to go with Lois McMaster Bujold’s the Sharing Knife series.

  37. Dwndrgn says:

You could try Melanie Rawn’s Sunrunner and Dragon Prince trilogies.  They aren’t all that similar to the Tairel Soul books but for some reason they immediately popped in to mind when you said you wanted something of the same caliber.

  38. Jenyfer says:

The book that grabbed me hardest and lingered in my mind longest and sparked the most discussion was not a romance, but sort of a memoir called “Infidel” by Ayaan Hirsi Ali. I read it at the suggestion of a friend and started it dutifully but ended up totally engrossed.

  39. Aralira says:

    Sharon Sala’s The Healer

  40. megalith says:

I just read Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games trilogy this year, so I’m going to go with those. Even though I read and enjoyed many many books, including romances, this year, those books stand out for me.

Hope everyone enjoyed/is enjoying their holidays.
