It’s not so much sizzling in northern coastal Scotland in the winter, but this book is amazing for it’s warmth, the strength of the writing, and the story-within-a-story. As I announced in the Book Club Chat last week, our April Book Club pick is Susanna Kearsley’s The Winter Sea.
Previously published in Canada as ‘Sophia’s Secret,’ and a nominee for both a RITA and a RNA award, this book is emotional, historically fascinating, rich and worth savoring. Here’s the description:
In the spring of 1708, an invading Jacobite fleet of French and Scottish soldiers nearly succeeded in landing the exiled James Stewart in Scotland to reclaim his crown.
Now, Carrie McClelland hopes to turn that story into her next bestselling novel. Settling herself in the shadow of Slains Castle, she creates a heroine named for one of her own ancestors and starts to write.
But when she discovers her novel is more fact than fiction, Carrie wonders if she might be dealing with ancestral memory, making her the only living person who knows the truth-the ultimate betrayal-that happened all those years ago, and that knowledge comes very close to destroying her…
This is what happens when romance and historical fiction are married perfectly – plus the story tells of Carrie’s present-day adventures and her character Sophia’s story a well.
As usual, if you use SBTBARE at checkout, you will get a 50% eBook Bucks Rebate at AllRomance.com, the official sponsor of the Sizzling Book Club. You can also buy a copy at Amazon.com, or Book Depository, or wherever the books in your preferred format are sold.
The 50% rebate at AllRomance will be valid from April 1-15, 2011.
I fully recognize that this is a more expensive book to be featuring, and I wouldn’t have chosen it if I didn’t truly think it was worth your reading and discussing. But to help with the sticker shock, I have five paper copies from Sourcebooks AND five digital copies (from yours truly) to give away. All you have to do is leave a comment and let me know which format you prefer. I will announce the winners and have books shipped out asap – or emailed, as the case may be. Contest is open for 24 hours.
Standard disclaimers apply: this giveaway is open to international entrants, though I’m not sure about the logistics of shipping to the International Space Station. I am not being compensated for this giveaway. Void where prohibited. Shading within a garment may occur. Use only in well-ventilated area. PC Load Letter.
I sniffled so obviously when I finished this book, Hubby was worried about me. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did, and can join us at the end of April (date and time TBA) to chat about it.

Would love a paper copy! Haven’t gotten out of the stone age yet. 🙂
Oh I’m intrigued! Both formats work for me.
Digital Format Please. This book looks wonderful!
I Luuuv Jacobite tales. Everything from P. Veryan to Gabaldon. Yes Please! Either format works for me
This is a new author for me, so I’m really looking forward to this book! Either format would be great, but prefer paper.
others94 – the number of other names to be chosen before mine! 😉
I would take either format, but would prefer Digital for my Sony eReader (when and if it ever returns from Sony’s replacement center). A good friend has been recommending this author to me, so it was a shockingly good surprise to see this as the next choice.
I was very intrigued by this book during DABWAHA and would love the chance to read it! Digital copy for me.
Oops, had the wrong email, this one is right.
Yes, please. I hope they’re using recycled paper.
i would love a paper copy!
I would love a paper copy! The plot sounds wonderful and the cover is so pretty!!
Amazon keeps recommending this for me. I guess you recommending it is the final nail in the coffin. Any format will do
I’d love a copy. Any format.
Thanks!
I’ve heard so many good things about this book… it’ll be interesting to read it. Though it’d be even more interesting to read a free copy!
This book sounds great! Either format would be awesome. Thanks!!
I have read a few other books by this author (and for some reason her books were hard to come by) and really loved the way she told a story. I would love to win a print copy of this book to add to the others I have by Susanna Kearsley.
Would love to read this! Paper version, though.
Can’t wait to read this one, SB Sarah!
I’d love a digital copy! But either format would be great as well. 🙂
This sounds fabulous! If I had a digital copy, I might just be able to find time in my packed academic schedule to read it in time for the book club chat.
Add me to the list of people who’d love a copy too. Either format is fine with me, but if you want to save on shipping to Canada digital it is.
Paper, please. Sounds like a good spring break read!
I love historicals set in Scotland. This sounds like a great read and strong temptation to take a wee break from school (see what I did there 😉 ). I would love a digital formatted version.
This sounds amazing! I’d love a copy in either format. How generous of you!
Ooh, me! Paperback, please.
I would love a copy! Preferably a paperback. Call me old school, but I still like the feeling of paper between my fingers when I read….
Book sounds fascinating…great cover
I’d be happy with either, but a digital copy will probably get read faster 😉
Oh, my, this takes me back! My first ever fictional crush was on Ewen Cameron from DK Broster’s The Flight of the Heron…after which I developed a huge romantic fixation on the entire Jacobite Rebellion, and read everything I could find on the subject. I never did forgive Butcher Cumberland for having the same birthday as me AND for using it to kill most of the Jacobites off at Culloden – and I was *mortified* when they put me in Campbell House at school.
Which is merely to say that I am more than mildly interested in reading a romance with Jacobites in it, even if it is the Old Pretender and not the Young one!
(paper copy, please, if the random book gods are kind to me)
Catherine
I’ve been wanting to read this for a longish time. I’d love the ebook version.
Put my name in the hat. *grin* I can do digital or paper.
THANK YOU!!!!
I have to read this – McClelland (that very spelling!) is my mother’s maiden name!
Oh, and digital is usually how I roll. 🙂
Ooh, me please! Either one is fine—digital, maybe?
Ooh, wow, great selection. It’s been on my TBR list. Digital for me please! Thanks for the giveaway!

Would love to win this in paper copy please! I saw a blurb about it and it sparked my fancy, and I can’t find it in a store around here!
Count me in for a chance at a print copy. Thanks!
So many friends recommend it, love to get the ebook.
Paper, please. Thanks!
I would love to win a copy of this book! Either paper or ebook (though book would be my first choice).
