Hanukkah, oh Hanukkah, there’s a lot of family during Hanukkah, so maybe it’s time to go hide and read.
To continue the festive merriment to celebrate reading, both paper and digital, I have a digital reader AND a case with a light – so you can hide in a closet and read. Not that I’ve ever done that, no. Not me!
All you have to do to win is leave a comment, and I’ll select a winner each day. These contests are open to international winners, and I will do my best to ship this week, provided people send me their addresses promptly.
Standard disclaimers apply: I’m not being compensated for this giveaway. If anything, my gift is exceptional support of the United States Postal Service (Happy Hanukkah, US Mail Carriers!). No shirt, no shoes, no service. Professional driver: do not attempt. Do not turn over. For ventilation, open window, or maybe a door.
Ahoy! Contest the sixth!
On the Sixth Night of Hanukkah, Smart Bitches Gave to Me: A refurbished Sony 300 Pocket, with a new case with an onboard light. Note: this is not the touchscreen Pocket; this is the previous model with the buttons. And, it is PINK. (I love this shade of pink on the Sonys. It’s awesome.)
Just leave a comment below, and tell me your favorite place to hide and read, and you’re entered to win. Comments close in 24 hours, but fear not, there’s another book – paper or digital – giveaway coming soon. Because Hanukkah lasts for eight crazy nights, and I will admit, I’m having a good time over here.
Happy Hanukkah, and Happy Reading!

Hmm..I don’t usually have to hide to read. My family thinks it odd if I don’t have a book with me. But there have been times when I would leave the house extra early to pick up kids, just so I could read in my car.
I don’t hide to read, I read everywhere. Ever since I first learned how. My parents still make fun of me because I used to carry a book under my arm all the time as a little kid, even while brushing my teeth 🙂
Lately for me, it seems like my weeekends are so full that I don’t get any reading done, so my favorite place to hide and read is on the hour train ride to and from work each day. It’s amazing how much reading I can get done during that time.
Personally, living in a small apartment, my bedroom is the place I hide. At this time of year, when it suddenly goes cold, I have piles of down throws on the bed and I can curl up in them with my two small dogs, one of whom will warn me if anyone steps inside…
My recliner chair in the living room is my current place of choice. However, the bathtub is another favorite. 🙂
My favorite spot to hide and read is on our big, comfy couch in the entry of our house—the light hits it just right and it’s always the perfect temperature there. Not to mention, the couch is low enough that my old dog can jump up and join me!
My current apartment isn’t really small enough to hide and read, but when I was younger, I’d go to the more formal sitting room (I called it the Sense and Sensibility room), where the couch had big cabbage roses on it, and the light in from the front of the house and the trees around the house was excellent during the day, and the lamps ideally placed at night. And if I decided to transition from reading to a nap, it was comfortable, and a throw was conveniently placed over the back for it.
It was so comfortable that when my mom couldn’t sleep in bed, she’d get up and come downstairs and nap a bit on that couch instead. Loved it!
I don’t have to hide while reading. But one of my favorite places is on the sofa in the wee hours of the morning. The house is cool and quite. The puppies snuggle down. Love IT!
Another awesome giveaway! Thanks, Sarah,
A comfy chair at my local Starbucks with a chai in hand is my fav place to escape so I can read uninterrupted.
When I was in junior high, my favorite place to curl up and read was in the bathroom. I would wrap myself in a compforter and huddle next to the air vent (where lovely lovely hot hair would whoosh out) and read for hours and hours.
Nowdays, I can heat the house to whatever temp I want and I live alone, so…no hiding necessary. However, my bed = excellent reading place. As it should be.
now24: um, not for some time now.
I hide in the laundry room; it’s warm in here and no one else goes in there 😉
I don’t need to hide to read these days—I share an apartment with my spouse and only my spouse, and he’s good about giving me space when I want it.
Back when I was living with my parents though, I definitely needed hiding spots. My favorite hiding spot was in the basement. Part of the basement was finished and served as a den and computer room, but part was unfinished. To get to the unfinished storage area, you had to walk through the laundry room and then the spare bathroom that no one used. My sisters were convinced the bathroom was haunted, so they wouldn’t venture into it.
Then, just to make sure no one could see me, I’d climb up into the rafters and perch there with a blanket and a mug of cocoa and read to my heart’s content.
Okay, all time fav…One time, while on a cruise, I found this awesome window seat in one of the lounges. It was kinda tucked back in the corner and the sun would come in and make it a drowsy, cozy cove. Just call me cat lady. I would sit in that seat for hours reading and hiding from the buffet. SWEET!
I like to curl up on the couch in the living room. It’s just my partner and myself at home, so I don’t usually have to hide, but if I want to be alone I can come in this room while they’re working in the office. Bonus benefit: the cat will usually curl up with me, since the heater’s in the living room too and she likes to be in the warmest room of the house.
As a child I used to hide in the closet with it open just enough to get light from the window because my sister who is not a reader would make fun of me for being a booknerd. Now I generally read while sitting on the couch, but if I am using reading as a de-stresser I will go and pile pillows on my bed and snuggle with the blanket knitted by my great grandmother.
In the bathtub!!!
Bathtub reading is the best!!
The bathtub!
Pink is my favorite color … Plus the light might help save my marriage as I read late into the night and prevent rem cycles for my poor hubby…
The bath. And no, I’m not afraid to take my ereader in there with me. It’s worth it.
To get away from hubs and my two toddlers I go to the bedroom and shut the door. I’m a stay at home mom and sometimes I NEED my own quiet time. And I’m exteremly lucky that hubs knows and understands this. 😀
I tend to read out in the open a lot. In my high school years my mother would tease me for laying on the floor to read because I would move with the patch of sun like a cat. However, I do enjoy the occasional odd/hidden space. In my dorm days it was under my raised dorm bed, behind the drawers. These days there’s a nice spot behind the couch that gets a lot of light where I can read in peace without being bothered.
I read anywhere I can!! I like to read in my backyard in the spring and summer when it is real nice or just anywhere I can pick up a book!!!
Heck, I am on of those people that will read a book at a stop light. I may only get in a few paragraphs, but I get to read!!
I used to hide and read in the back of my dad’s jeep. Now, I can hide out in my apartment (or in my carrel at the library).
In the warmer weatherm I hide out on my front porch, or in my MIL’s backyard by the pool! 🙂 At home, I go down in the basement with the declaration I am going to do laundry. No one bothers me then!
IF I need to get away and read its probably the nearest surface I can curl up on. Though I tend not to hide, I want my dd to enjoy books as much as I do, so I read to her, in front of her, and with her.
i used to go to the beach and hide and read all the time…
I used to hide under my bed and read. Blankets just didn’t cut it for my childhood self.
I love to read in my comfy recliner in the den. I don’t have to hide to read—yet. That may change when Hubby retires!
My husband works from home so its hard to find an escape sometimes. In good weather though, i love reading on the back porch.
Like so many before me, I hide out in the bathroom and read. I too read while brushing my teeth, and often end up sitting on our bath rug, trying to get my self to a stopping point, when my honey is in bed, lights out already.
I still dream of having a home that will have a little nook somewhere, with a cozy chair and ottoman just for me and book.
Like many others, I hide in the bathroom to read. It is the one place I can go where no one comes asking me to do something while I”m in the middle of reading.
The bathroom! It’s the only place in my house that my kid and husband won’t start asking what I’m doing while I’m in there!
Growing up I used to read in the closet with a flashlight.
Oh yeah—and I just “graduated” to needing reading glasses. At the ripe old age of 38. I can now neither see near nor far with out assistance. So I really really need the lighted reader! ;oP
I read the fifth Harry Potter in my closet with my bead side lamp on an extension cord because my parents told me that it was too late and I needed to go to sleep. It’s kind of a hilarious memory to me.
My favorite place to hid when the whole family gets together, with friends and all, is the backyard of my parents house. Even though the whole backyard is on view with windows and sliding doors, no one ever thinks to check there when I go missing. My parents have a swing and plenty of chairs back there so I can escape all of the chaos for a little while and curl up with a good book, and the sunshine.
I have two favorite spots. At home, it’s the one place I can sit utterly undisturbed: the bathroom.
But I love to go grab a latté (winter) or iced tea (summer) and go park under a tree somewhere and just sit and read in the car.
The bathroom – its warm, has good light and a door!
I’m channeling the Menorah…OM, OM, OM….Sony Reader come to meeeee….
Favorite “secret” place to read is the gym, since no one dares to bother anyone at the gym who is in spandex.
Except for that time maybe I asked a lady how she liked her “Enemy Lover” book with the sexy cover.
I don’t really have a reading hiding place but I do reserve mornings before everyone else is up for me and my coffee and a book!
As a teenager I was known to hide in my closet and read instead of cleaning my room 😉
My favorite place to read is in the corner of our living room which has a view to the porch. Gives me the best of both inside and outside!
