Smart Bitches Hanukkah Festival Giveaway: Part Six!

image Hanukkah, oh Hanukkah, there’s a lot of family during Hanukkah, so maybe it’s time to go hide and read.

To continue the festive merriment to celebrate reading, both paper and digital, I have a digital reader AND a case with a light – so you can hide in a closet and read. Not that I’ve ever done that, no. Not me!

All you have to do to win is leave a comment, and I’ll select a winner each day. These contests are open to international winners, and I will do my best to ship this week, provided people send me their addresses promptly.

Standard disclaimers apply: I’m not being compensated for this giveaway. If anything, my gift is exceptional support of the United States Postal Service (Happy Hanukkah, US Mail Carriers!). No shirt, no shoes, no service. Professional driver: do not attempt. Do not turn over. For ventilation, open window, or maybe a door.

Ahoy! Contest the sixth!

imageOn the Sixth Night of Hanukkah, Smart Bitches Gave to Me: A refurbished Sony 300 Pocket, with a new case with an onboard light. Note: this is not the touchscreen Pocket; this is the previous model with the buttons. And, it is PINK. (I love this shade of pink on the Sonys. It’s awesome.)

Just leave a comment below, and tell me your favorite place to hide and read, and you’re entered to win. Comments close in 24 hours, but fear not, there’s another book – paper or digital – giveaway coming soon. Because Hanukkah lasts for eight crazy nights, and I will admit, I’m having a good time over here.

Happy Hanukkah, and Happy Reading!

  1. I hide in the upstairs guest bedroom. Since most of the activity is going on downstairs, I can usually get away for a while without feeling like I’m abandoning my Munchkin.

  2. Chris says:

This is not necessarily my favorite, but most functional reading hiding spot – the bathroom.

I’m totally digging the pink Sony. It’s got a very Barbie theme to it. 🙂

  3. ocelott says:

The bathtub, absolutely. It’s not foolproof, but it’s more likely to give me a few minutes of solitude than any other place in the house.  And as long as I have a baggy handy, I’ll even take an e-reader with me.

  4. Tracie says:

At my college, the English building was super old. There was this little nook underneath the stairs with a big comfy chair and a lamp. For some reason, nobody ever thought to look for me there.

  5. Jennifer says:

I don’t have to hide to read in my house, I have trained myself to tune everyone/everything else out.

  6. Staplegun says:

I just hide in my room to read, sadly everyone knows where to find me.

  7. CindyK says:

Well when I was young and suppose to be taking a nap or sleeping at night (very early bedtimes), under the covers with a flashlight I would go.  Otherwise, I have never had to hide.

But, I might have, on occasion, didn’t show all the books I checked out to my parents…which was no east feat since we lived about 20 miles from the nearest public library and it was an every 3 week visit to the library (timed for the due date on the library books).

Difficult, but not impossible.  Ahh, those were the days.

  8. Erin says:

I’ve always compared my reading habits to that of Belle from the Disney version of Beauty and the Beast, because my nose is always stuck in a book. My poor husband has stopped trying to get my full attention when I’m reading, but he does say he’s thankful that I’m female and can multi-task (otherwise nothing would get done around here!) But if I need a place to hide away to read, I always choose the bathtub. No one bothers me while I’m in there, and it puts a lovely time limit to my hiding because the water gets cold in a slow silent fashion. Without that, I probably would lose track of time and finish the book before coming out of hiding. ^.^

  9. Amanda S. (ManaChelle) says:

I really wouldn’t call it “hiding” it’s more like I put the evil little children to bed and then I get quiet time till I go to bed to watch movies/t.v. with the hubby then he goes to bed round 10 and it’s my time 😉 This is when I do most of my reading and this is also the reason I’m so tired in the mornings, ha.
I would love to have an e-reader because my hubby wants to buy me one for Christmas but if I won it then we could use the money for the kiddos 😉

  10. snethet says:

At night when my family watches TV I sometimes sneak off to bed early and snuggle down, surrounded by pillows and a cup of tea and read until they figure out I’m not in the room with them.  Happy Hanukkah Smart Bitches.

  11. M says:

I hide, I hide alot. In my room, with the light off so everyone thinks I’m napping. Not that it stops them for long. Mostly there is lots of whispering just outside the door. Should we or shouldn’t we? Usually, they send the dog in first.

  12. Joy says:

Strangely enough in the couch in our living room is where I read.  All the guys gather around the big HD TV in the family room or the kitchen.  That leaves the living room to ME, ME, ME (and the cat).

  13. DianeN says:

I don’t actually have to hide to read. One of many perks of living alone!!

  14. Erin says:

My bed is the best reading/hiding place in my apartment.  Once I kick out my sweetheart.  🙂

  15. Leslie says:

Favorite place to hide and read? On my laptop in my on-campus office – pile enough “serious” books around the desk and no one suspects you are reading about Breed politics or mysterious BDSM clubs with Masters who instinctively know what the timid bookworms who venture in accidentally need to unleash their inner sex goddesses.

  16. Ann W. says:

During lunch at work, I sit on the floor behind my desk and pull out the books with the crazy covers to get my noon fix because staying home in bed all day reading just doesn’t pay the bills.

  17. Pamk says:

might not be safe but I love to lock the bathroom door and read in a bubble bath.

  18. geekgirl says:

In the tub.  I think I have spent more hours reading in the tub than anywhere else. No one wanders by and assumes that you’re “not doing anything anyway” when you’re in the tub.

  19. Natalie Decker says:

Oooh, me me me pick ME!!! It seems like everyone has an e-reader these days…except me!!!!

  20. Pamk says:

probably not safe but I love to lock the bathroom door and read in a bubble bath

  21. MarieC says:

My favorite place to read is in bed. Doesn’t matter what time of day.

  22. Brenda says:

I don’t hide to read, I simply have a book/reader with me at all times. The hard part is figuring out which book I wish to read. So many books, so little time.

  23. trude says:

Either in the bathroom (I love the warm tiles), or in bed. 🙂

  24. LisaA says:

My favorite place is in my bed, underneath my big, fluffy comforter.  Happy Hanukkah!!

  25. Larena Wirum says:

I enjoy going into the bedroom and reading.  It is nice and quiet there.

  26. ilex says:

@Leslie hahaha RIGHT ON! I love those books. Club Shadowlands are great for that.

I don’t really “hide” while reading. But truth be told, I *have* an e-reader and a case with a quick-flip cover, so no one ever knows what I am reading. If I won this Sony, I would totally give it to my fellow reader/writer girlfriend who needs a pink e-reader like mad.

  27. Andi says:

In my bedroom with a big mug of tea, with the door closed of course!

  28. AndieG says:

I tend to hide out in one of 3 places depending on my mood, the location and state of conciousness of my children and how much time I have.  My 3 hide-away spots are snuggled up in bed under the comforter, a nice secluded corner of the local bookstore and/or the bathroom with the door firmly locked against intruders!

  29. Now that I’m a grown up—and don’t have to hide in the rumpus room (what can I say? I was a 70s child)—my favorite “hiding” place is in my living room, when no one is home. Blessed quiet, and a good book!

  30. maru says:

I love to hide in my bed and read lots and lots of books!

  31. BadgerChaser says:

I get some of my best reading done on the El.  Pull out a good book, and I can ignore everything around me and my commute flies by.  It feels like I’m hiding in plain sight of thousands of people.

ETA: the captcha was “usually 69”—I just snorted my coffee.

  32. LizM says:

Count me as one of those who read in the bathtub (must remember to buy more lavender bubble bath) but as I kid I read under the covers with a flashlight, and somehow my mother always discovered me.

  33. redgirl says:

Theoretically, the light would be nice, tho I have NEVER tried to read in the closet. Or under the covers. Or on the sly. Ever.

  34. Jama says:

I work at a museum, and I like to spend my lunch hour reading in the docent lounge.

  35. ah-ha says:

In bed with a lot of pillows

  36. Linsalot says:

    In bed for sure 🙂

  37. Overquoted says:

I actually have a Sony Reader 505. Mine has long gouge in the screen with grey bleeding through it from where a heavy metal cabinet fell off a wall and scored a direct hit with the sharp corner. But if I won, I’d give it to my aunt, who has been wanting one since she first played with mine.

Since I live alone, I don’t need to hide. But my favorite place to read has always been in a park, near a pond or lake. It’s nice to be able to listen to the birds and occasionally look up from the book to watch turtles or squirrels fooling around. A friend and I do just that every so often. Mutually assured reading. *snicker*

  38. Sarah B. says:

I don’t really have to hide to read. I can easily lock myself in my room (I guess that counts as hiding). But one of the best places to read is on the love seat in the nook under the stairs in my psych building. The couch is surprisingly comfortable, and no one bothers you because it looks like you’re studying. I read there while I’m waiting for class.

  39. Jamie says:

Being single, childless and having my own place, I don’t have to hide.  But I usually read someplace where I can snuggle in—bed or my couch.

  40. Amy says:

Like to read in a dark bedroom, when I can’t sleep. Although it’s probably not the best to read lying down.
