Hanukkah, oh Hanukkah, there’s a lot of family during Hanukkah, so maybe it’s time to go hide and read.
To continue the festive merriment to celebrate reading, both paper and digital, I have a digital reader AND a case with a light – so you can hide in a closet and read. Not that I’ve ever done that, no. Not me!
All you have to do to win is leave a comment, and I’ll select a winner each day. These contests are open to international winners, and I will do my best to ship this week, provided people send me their addresses promptly.
Standard disclaimers apply: I’m not being compensated for this giveaway. If anything, my gift is exceptional support of the United States Postal Service (Happy Hanukkah, US Mail Carriers!). No shirt, no shoes, no service. Professional driver: do not attempt. Do not turn over. For ventilation, open window, or maybe a door.
Ahoy! Contest the sixth!
On the Sixth Night of Hanukkah, Smart Bitches Gave to Me: A refurbished Sony 300 Pocket, with a new case with an onboard light. Note: this is not the touchscreen Pocket; this is the previous model with the buttons. And, it is PINK. (I love this shade of pink on the Sonys. It’s awesome.)
Just leave a comment below, and tell me your favorite place to hide and read, and you’re entered to win. Comments close in 24 hours, but fear not, there’s another book – paper or digital – giveaway coming soon. Because Hanukkah lasts for eight crazy nights, and I will admit, I’m having a good time over here.
Happy Hanukkah, and Happy Reading!

I love reading at the pub, midweek, just after the Happy Hour rush. My local place leaves me alone but for replenishing my beer or soda, and I find it really pleasant to sip and read and occasionally nosh on some pub food.
The bathtub. Love laying there in the nice warm water and reading. And then my cat tries to save me from the water by drinking it all….
On my couch, under a pile of blankets!
In the bathroom in the clothes closet. It’s the only place in the entire house with two locked doors…and no four-year-olds 😉
If I am at home, I hide in my bedroom to read. If I am still at work waiting for my husband to get ready to leave, I hide in the truck with a book.
I hide in the bathroom.
I read anywhere and everywhere, except the closet. I have the perfect chair with a throw to keep me warm. Sometimes my puppy will even sit on my lap and let me read.
My bedroom. Boring, I know! But when I want to read undisturbed, it has always been in my bedroom with the door shut-even when I was a kid.
My favorite place to hide and read has always been in bed. There’s something so comforting about big fluffy pillows and a warm comforter.
Only problem is it sometimes changes from reading to napping.
Summer86—I was 16 years old. I’d just as soon not repeat that one.
I don’t really have to ‘hide’ but my favorite ‘stop everything and read’ place is my new LaZBoy chair. I put the “author at work” sign on my door and Hubster leaves me alone.

Romance with a Twist—of Mystery
My favorite place to hide and read is in the bath, but unfortunately we only have one bathroom in the house right now, so that’s out of the question—there are constant interruptions of small children needing to pee. So, at the moment, I hide in the bedroom or in the extra bedroom with books (nobody ever thinks to look for mom there).
I’ve never really had to hide to read at home. Usually I read with my feet up on my sofa, with a bowl of popcorn, but that’s an outgrowth of what I did when I was little; my childhood apartment has low flat radiators/airconditioners (depending on the season) , and the one in my bedroom as a kid was between the wall and my bed. I would sit on it with my feet up, and my back leaning against the bed, so that I could feel the hot air coming up in wintertime, with a book and a cup of hot chocolate, and a bowl of popcorn, or in the summer time so I could feel the cool air, with a book and an ice cream soda.
I travel a lot (I have a touring job) so now I actually get a chance to do my favorite thing – reading! Perfect on those long flights. My suitcase is often too heavy, not just because I am an indecisive clothing-packer (I really neeeed those five pairs of shoes!) but because I devour books so quickly that I need to stuff about ten of them in my bag.
I live by myself so I don’t need to hide, but I read anywhere!
Like many other moms, the only place I’m assured of privacy is the bathroom. I may have to change my reading hideaway to the barn, however, since my family members have developed an uncanny ability to sense when I’m indisposed and THEN THEY STAND OUTSIDE AND YELL QUESTIONS TO ME!!! Seriously, they all seem to think I can psychokinetically locate missing items or fix snacks while I’m on the pot.
One day, I will be able to curl up on my sofa, touch my temple and the pages of the recent Japanese novel or manga I am reading will pull up. In the meantime, we have vaguely book shaped pieces of plastic and metal that want to be my book replacement…
Currently, it’s the traditional hiding spot: the bathroom, or if I’m lucky, my bed. I have a wonderful bed shawl to keep my shoulders & arms warm while the rest of me is tucked under the covers.
Where I used to work, they had these great deep windows in the stairwells. I would sit on one of those to read during my lunch hour. It was wonderful; I got screened sunlight (a good thing with my complexion), a lovely view and very few people came by or disturbed me.
It was a special place (captcah special 25)
The best place I’ve ever hidden to read was in the car. I would park my car where the neighbors couldn’t see me, turn off all the lights, and sit and read or listen to an audiobook. If this isn’t an option, I sometimes go to the bathroom and not comeback!
I have a bad habit of leaving to pick up my kids from day care a little early to avoid the worst of rush hour traffic—and then hiding in my car for half an hour to read before I actually pick them up. It’s awesome in warmer weather where I can pull into a shady spot and open the sunroof, but now that it’s getting colder I might have to start eying the Starbucks down the street, *sigh*.
Under the covers with my guy next to me and my cats at my feet.
I read in my tiny office or bedroom. I refer to my office as “the cave.” It has one tiny window.
I hide away in our tiny upstairs guest room. Sometimes the dog figures it out but hubby and child usually don’t…
I used to sit underneath the little table in my room and read when I was a kid; I also read under my bed and in my closet. Now I do most of my reading in the armchair in my living room—the perks of living by myself!
My favourite reading spot is our huge armchair. If it is not stuffed with toys or clothes it’s an ideal place with great natural lighting.
I sit in my car in the parking lot at work and finish chapters before I have to go and pick up the kids (and make dinner and do laundry and be Mom…)
Yes, I do hide. And I’m not ashamed.
I hide at Cosi on my lunch to read
Since my son deserted me and left for college, I don’t have to hide to read anymore. So..er..well, when I was a kid, my mom always used to yell at me because she’d catch me reading in the back of my closet when I was supposed to be either doing chores or watching my younger brothers.
When I saw Sarah’s post on Twitter about a pink Pocket..my mind immediately went someplace dirty. Obviously, I’ve been reading things here too often, yay!
I would LOVE to get a pink Sony with a light…my husband would never borrow it and I wouldn’t need to turn a light on to read or sit by the window.. no more tilting the paperback at the train station to see by the streetlamps light while waiting to pick someone up …Merry Christmas!!
I read everywhere. But when I hide out and read, it’s usually in the bathroom, especially late at night, when DH’s snoring gets to be too much. That way, I don’t turn on lights all over the house and wake up the dog=which would wake up the DH.
Not ideal, but it works.
The most unsual reading place for me were the high school football games. My daughters were cheerleaders and I don’t understand football, so I only went to watch my daughters cheer. I would read between cheers. I had great timing and never missed a cheer.
I always have a book in my bag for when I have to wait in line unexpectedly – when there’s a few minutes between debate rounds (I’m a debate coach) – waiting for my 4-sport daughter to be done with practice. What I end up hiding sometimes isn’t the reading, but the subject matter. We read lots of vampire novels and lots of SF/Fan and sometimes I hide the covers in paper bag book cover so the other mothers won’t give me to much of a hard time. Even the good detective vampire novels have some covers that these mothers might be faint at heart to see!
My favorite spot to read is in bed, with a cup of tea & a few cookies on the nightstand. Nice & warm & cozy and no interruptions!!
I hide in the guest room upstairs where I say I’m going to fold laundry… I think my family has caught on by now, unfortunately 🙂
Hotel bathroom. At corporate meetings where we always have random roommates I inevitably end up with several pillows and a blanket in the bathroom. Ya know, since it’s 2 am and the roomie is sleeping, like a normal person. Extra special if there is a heat lamp in the bathroom.
At my house it’s not a favorite place. It’s a favorite time. Between 11 pm and whenever I pass out I can hide anywhere that does not have a sleeping spouse or kids. Electric blanket required.
i read everywhere (and i seriously mean everywhere: bathroom, living room, kitchen while i’m cooking, study – duh!, in the teacher’s lounge during recess, in the long line in supermarket, in my car when i’m waiting for the green light…), but my favourite reading spot would be my bed. i love to read myself to sleep. hubby is snorring for hours, and i’m talking to myself: ok, i’ll go to bed, but first i have to finish the chapter 😀
I read anywhere and everywhere. I must always have my book with me in case I have a spare minute.
If it’s to hide & read, it would have to be in the car, with the car parked in the garage…a way to sneak in a few minutes of down time before heading back into the chaos of home.
I used to read by my night light b/c my dad thought I should go to bed way earlier than the book I was reading would let me. Now I have bad eyesight, but oh well 🙂
My favorite place to hide and read is the car. I always leave early to get in the pick up line at school. That’s like 30 min. of uninterrupted reading time and as a mother of three that doesn’t happen very often!
Since I am not blessed with kids, and my husband leaves me alone when he sees that I have a new book, I usually just chill out in the bedroom.
