Hanukkah, oh Hanukkah, there’s a lot of family during Hanukkah, so maybe it’s time to go hide and read.
To continue the festive merriment to celebrate reading, both paper and digital, I have a digital reader AND a case with a light – so you can hide in a closet and read. Not that I’ve ever done that, no. Not me!
All you have to do to win is leave a comment, and I’ll select a winner each day. These contests are open to international winners, and I will do my best to ship this week, provided people send me their addresses promptly.
Standard disclaimers apply: I’m not being compensated for this giveaway. If anything, my gift is exceptional support of the United States Postal Service (Happy Hanukkah, US Mail Carriers!). No shirt, no shoes, no service. Professional driver: do not attempt. Do not turn over. For ventilation, open window, or maybe a door.
Ahoy! Contest the sixth!
On the Sixth Night of Hanukkah, Smart Bitches Gave to Me: A refurbished Sony 300 Pocket, with a new case with an onboard light. Note: this is not the touchscreen Pocket; this is the previous model with the buttons. And, it is PINK. (I love this shade of pink on the Sonys. It’s awesome.)
Just leave a comment below, and tell me your favorite place to hide and read, and you’re entered to win. Comments close in 24 hours, but fear not, there’s another book – paper or digital – giveaway coming soon. Because Hanukkah lasts for eight crazy nights, and I will admit, I’m having a good time over here.
Happy Hanukkah, and Happy Reading!

Level 8 of the University of Sydney Library. It’s the stack section where English lit lives, and it’s mostly very quiet. You can choose a little desk to yourself and feel totally alone, with a strange, narrow view down over the law building on your left. I love the smell in there, different to every other level of the library.
In my room by the window I have an old rocker that belonged to my husband’s great-grandmother. Soooo comfortable, perfect light, and the angle and furniture hide me from anyone who peeks in looking for me. I could (have, do) spend hours there.
I just created a reading area by the fireplace in my living room. The boys in my house know that when I’m in that chair, if they’re thinking about bugging me, someone better be bleeding. Now if I could only train the dog to leave me alone, I’d be in great shape!
When I was little I really did hide: under any table that was covered and I would stay there until some one found me.
My hiding spot now is the bath tub. I lock the door and with a nice glass of wine and a warm bath filled with bubbles I read for at least an hour.
Of course, I love to curl up under the covers to read. But the oddest place I love to read is at sporting events. I started reading during football games in high school and found that the craziness actually is conducive to sinking into another world.
The hubz has this amazing ability where he just falls asleep after being in bed for 15 min. I, however, do not possess that elusive ability. So sometimes (like if I have been reading an OMGiliterallycannotwaituntilmorningtofindoutwhathappens kind of book) I’ll wait until he’s asleep then bring out the book light stashed under the bed and read under the covers. That’s really the only time I need to hide and read.
Happy Hanukkah!
I have never needed to hide when I wanted peace and quiet for reading. My family are all readers and we respect each other’s needs.
My favourite place for reading at home is an old squishy sofa in which I can arrange piles of cushions and pillows to allow me to adopt just about any reading position imaginable. In the winter I add a blanket or even drag my duvet from the bedroom to make a warm nest for myself.
On the rose-colored loveseat in my living room with a blanket on my lap and the french doors to the hall closed.
When I was younger I remember sneaking books into the cafeteria to read during lunch (because my school didn’t allow books in the cafeteria… no idea where they were going with that…) but now I use the guest bedroom in my apartment, since it is only infrequently occupied by guests other than my cat.
I like to sit in my car and wait for the kid to get out of school. It’s some good quiet time.
Pink – that’s quite a color!!
I’ve been known to hide in the car. I can hear the kids yelling for me (they are FINE!!) and I’m tucked away in the garage trying to finish the chapter!
Love to be a winner. Happy Channukah!
The closet sounds like a good place to hide, except my cats would probably meow at the door for being left out.
There’s a red chair in my basement in the corner I like to hide on. It’s hidden by a wall sticking out so no one can see me. I just have to stock up on blankets so I don’t get cold.
Anywhere. Everywhere. All the time. If I don’t have a book to read, I start pacing like a rabid animal. Seriously 🙂
There is no where good enough to hide in our house when family is in – even the closets are not big enough with built ins! I tend to go run errands and read a while when gone – just to escape for a minute.
My favorite place to read is in my family room with my feet up. We have a wood stove and its cozy. If there is family around then i retreat to my bedroom and prop up the pillows.
I don’t really have to hide to read anymore, but my bedroom is the best place for it. When I was a kid, I would love to be sent to my room, because it meant that I could read in peace!
The bathroom at work when I’m having a really bad day and need to calm down and regroup a bit. 🙂
I don’t hide and read. If I hide, the kids wreak havoc. Instead, I sit in the middle of the chaos and read. It’s amazing how I can tune out the noise.
Oooh, I love that cute little pink reader! My favorite place to read is in my bed propped up with a million pillows.
I hide out in the bathroom. When that gets interrupted I head for the kitchen, where everyone expects me to be any. The bathroom is my favorite however.
When I was a kid I’d hide in my reading—just put myself in a corner with a book and totally zone out. I’m not so good at ignoring the rest of the world anymore, but since I live alone (wonderful), I don’t have to be.
I have 2 favorite places to hide to read. In the summer it is on the back porch and in the winter it is in the “formal” living room.
My bedroom has always been my reading hiding place. Even now, I retreat there to read if the rest of the house is feeling chaotic, or if I don’t want my husband to interrupt me.
Favourite place to read: my comfortable recliner. That’s currently in storage.
Favourite place to HIDE and read: my bed. Less likelihood of getting disturbed!
I read every night in bed with the blankets pulled up to my chin. It’s not really a secret place because everybody in my family know that is my time. BTW, thanks for the awesome prizegivery!
When I was younger, I used to hide under my bed to read after my parents had sent me to bed. Sure it was uncomfortable and I was always caught, but I got so much reading done! Now that I’m ‘all grown up’, I tend to just read IN bed, or on the couch, or on the bus, or in the bathroom… generally everywhere but under the bed.
Come to think of it – hiding in the bathroom to read is sneaky of me.
I just got a brand new couch for the first time ever a few months ago, so that’s where I retreat to read. I curl up at one end with a blanket and my cat at my feet. It’s heaven!
I don’t have a hiding place. I will read anywhere any time with no problems. But, honestly.. the most comfortable place is curled up in my blanket with my kitty on my lap reading with me.
It’s not really much of a hiding spot, but in this cold weather, there’s nothing cozier than snuggling down under the covers, leaned back against two fat pillows. My mind may wander a million miles away, to wherever my book happens to take me, but my body stays nice and warm in bed.
I like to read a little in bed before getting up in the morning, to ease into the day and wake up my brain. If my dogs come to see if I’m awake before I’m ready to stop reading, I ‘hide out’ by pretending to be asleep. They’ll stand there for a minute watching me, then decide it’s a lost cause and go lie down. ‘Well trained’ is not necessarily what someone else would expect!
Backstage!! I have a lot of downtime during the current show, so I’ve been putting my iPhone in airplane mode, dimming the screen, and reading eBooks in my stage right corner.
During my lunch hour I like to hide in my boss’s office and read (only while he is out of town). I can close the door (it auto locks) and read to my heart’s content.
I like to read in my room so I’m not disturbed when reading a really good novel.
I love to read in the kitchen. Everyone thinks I am busily working away (and heaven forbid they actually help!…) so I get in lots of totally bother free reading time.
I love sneaking off to the bathroom, sitting on the edge of the tub and reading a few pages while my husband watches kiddo!
I really don’t have to hide and read much anymore at home. Work is a different story in order to get some good reading in I will go hide out in my car until my break is over.
I love reading while cooking in the kitchen. The smell of cinnamon and paperback should be a perfume.
In my spare bed (no one thinks to look for me there) & because it has the comfiest pillows & cushions
Up in a tree!
