Smart Bitches Hanukkah Festival Giveaway: Part Six!

image Hanukkah, oh Hanukkah, there’s a lot of family during Hanukkah, so maybe it’s time to go hide and read.

To continue the festive merriment to celebrate reading, both paper and digital, I have a digital reader AND a case with a light – so you can hide in a closet and read. Not that I’ve ever done that, no. Not me!

All you have to do to win is leave a comment, and I’ll select a winner each day. These contests are open to international winners, and I will do my best to ship this week, provided people send me their addresses promptly.

Standard disclaimers apply: I’m not being compensated for this giveaway. If anything, my gift is exceptional support of the United States Postal Service (Happy Hanukkah, US Mail Carriers!). No shirt, no shoes, no service. Professional driver: do not attempt. Do not turn over. For ventilation, open window, or maybe a door.

Ahoy! Contest the sixth!

imageOn the Sixth Night of Hanukkah, Smart Bitches Gave to Me: A refurbished Sony 300 Pocket, with a new case with an onboard light. Note: this is not the touchscreen Pocket; this is the previous model with the buttons. And, it is PINK. (I love this shade of pink on the Sonys. It’s awesome.)

Just leave a comment below, and tell me your favorite place to hide and read, and you’re entered to win. Comments close in 24 hours, but fear not, there’s another book – paper or digital – giveaway coming soon. Because Hanukkah lasts for eight crazy nights, and I will admit, I’m having a good time over here.

Happy Hanukkah, and Happy Reading!

When my kids were little, it was in the corner of my room especially when the sun was shining in and it was warm.  Now that they are grown and out of the house, I don’t need to hide!

  2. Nadia says:

In my car while waiting on my kids are at soccer practice, dance class, piano practice, etc., etc…..

  3. KellyM says:

I like to hide in plain sight – on my couch when no one else is home, with no TV or radio or phone on nearby.  Doesn’t happen very often, but when it does it’s lovely.

  4. P. Awful says:

I hide in the bathroom at work (shhhh)

  5. Virginia E says:

Currently, I must make do with my cozy bed and a book I can put in a hardbacker bookcover so I can attach my booklight. The family knows not to enter my room if the door is shut.

However, I miss the cozy set up I had once upon a time. A comfy old armchair with hassock was tucked away behind a dresser. There was no way to see me withough coming into that room and searching.

  6. Ms. M says:

On the john. Unoriginal and kinda shameful…

  7. Corrinne says:

Although I often hide in the bathroom to read (as a single mother, this is a survival tactic), I cannot say it is my FAVORITE place.  You know, the lack of comfortable seating and all.  I’d have to say that I’ve gotten pretty dern good at reading during my preschool students’ naptime at work in between the cots.  I should be doing lesson plans…but if I really love a book, I’ll carry it in my purse and read at stoplights until I’ve devoured it, so naptime productivity is a casualty.

  8. Stephanie K. says:

    I usually read in bed.

  9. NoKindleForKindle says:

Okay, so I know it sounds cliche, but I have a deep purple microfiber couch, and I love to curl up on it with a blanket and my two yorkies beside me (their names are “Giblet Frances” and “Delightful Jane”).  Nice and toasty.

As an aside, though, I find that reading is much like making love… Best done when it’s raining outside and when there is a steaming cup of hot chocolate nearby.  Hell, who am I kidding- ANYTIME, ANYWHERE!!!!!

  10. Meghan says:

When I was younger, I read in bed by the light of the street light outside my window.  And after my parents caught me doing that, I read by flashlight in the bed, under the bed, in the closet….

In university, I worked in the library and knew all the best hiding spots with really comfortable purple chairs.

Now, with two boys under five, if I get to read grown up books, it is in bed, in the bathroom, or half-in, half-out of my son’s room as I put him to sleep (an adventure for which one needs light, preferably light directed at the book).

  11. ennyl says:

I love to read and hide in bed. There’s nowhere more comfortable.

  12. Xy_Zero says:

When I have to actually hide and read I go to my bathroom. My room faces my mom’s but my bathroom is around a corner, so it’s the only place I can go where the light doesn’t bug her and if I stay up really late with a book it’s perfect. (I found this out by doing a loooot of all-night homework and essays in there.)

  13. Lara K. says:

I love to curl up in bed, snuggle under the covers, and read the night away.  Not so good for my attention at work the next day, but I’m comfortable with my priorities. 🙂

  14. Pam says:

I like to read in restaurants.  A book is my favorite dining companion, and I have a list of restaurants that I particularly like to go to for dinner and a read.  These are the places where the staff gets to know you and no one shoots you hostile looks because you’re occupying space and time with a book.  Waited on and no one interrupts you—who could ask for anything more?

  15. eta_o says:

I love to fill the bathtub up with water as hot as I can stand it, and stay in there until it gets cold….and sometimes I partially drain it and refill it with hot water again!

must28:  this thing must be psychic, because it knows my age!

  16. April says:

My favorite place is the new Queen Anne chair I got. And now that it’s cold, I grab a good book, bundle up in a few polar fleece blankets and I’m good to go.

  17. Kimberly B. says:

I don’t really have to hide anywhere to read, although it’s fun to take a book and a picnic to the park. When I was a kid, though, I got in trouble for reading after bedtime during the summer while it was still light out. My mom told me “If you want to stay up a little and read, you need to ask.” I said, “May I stay up a little and read?” Her response: “No.”
Maybe it really is better to beg forgiveness than to ask permission!

  18. Janice S says:

I read mostly in bed but a nice glass (or medium sized carafe!) of wine and a book make bath time fun as weel. Of course I live alone so I don’t HAVE to hide but still do.. lol

  19. Theresa I says:

My favorite place to hide and read is the bathtub…But that may have to change with an e-reader!

  20. BJ says:

One advantage to living alone: no need to hide 😉 So I just curl up on the living room sofa or in bed to read.

  21. Amy C says:

Definitely the big comfy chair in the family room.  I give off the “leave me alone right now” aura.  And I smell pretty good!

  22. Linda Henderson says:

I have a favorite recliner that I curl up in, nobody else likes it so I don’t have to worry about anyone else sitting in it.

  23. Janene says:

I read in the bathroom, on the toilet. It stems from my youth when my Mom would call through the house, asking me where I was as she had chores afoot. When I replied, “In the bathroom!” she would leave me alone, I would avoid the chore(s), and have a little quiet time.

Even now, when I have every place I could possibly want to read in my own home, I have books next to the can. When i was reading journal articles for university courses, I would read, highlighter in tow, on the toilet.

    Some habits die hard.

  24. Courtney says:

Like many others who have already posted, I hide in the tub to read!  I am married to my romance novel hero, however he is not an avid reader.  Therefore he has no problem interrupting me when I’m reading to tell me to watch a football replay, to look at the cat, to watch this kid fall over on youtube….but the bathtub!!! It’s my reading haven.  It’s the only time I can be undisturbed because my hubby knows it’s me time.

  25. Jody F says:

My favorite place to hide and read is, like when I was a kid, under the blankets with a flashlight.  I just have to make sure to leave an air hole so I don’t suffocate.

  30. SaraC says:

I love to curl up in bed, under my covers all nice and cozy!

  31. lunarocket says:

I don’t know if reading in bed is hiding but that’s where I tend to read. Of course, is DH isn’t home I often find myself sitting in his recliner, reading. I suppose I’m hiding, since he isn’t home, he can’t find me, (except for the telltale popcorn crumbs all over the floor).

  32. Allyson says:

My all-time favorite place was in the house I grew up in. There was a bathroom in the basement with just a shower stall, which no one ever used. I piled in lots of blankets and pillows and read while I ate slices of Kraft American cheese. At the time, I thought that cheese was A star number one when it came to food.

  33. maggie says:

I love to read in my chair by the fire or in my bath tub.

  34. Pamela Sinclair says:

I love to climb into bed and snuggle in or take a throw and curl up in a chair.

  35. sweetsiouxsie says:

I used to be able to lie in bed and read almost all night. I have to sit up in a chair now. I get too creaky otherwise.

  36. Juls says:

Truly and I hope my boss doesn’t see this but I like to read in the basement at work. I have a small store room where we store our Internet books and I do all the inputting there, but sometimes I’ll just sit back at the desk and space out with the newest Marjorie m. Liu instead.

  37. SusanL says:

Either a hot bath, or in my room.  Peace, quiet and a good book 🙂

  38. Erin says:

My favorite place to hide and read is my laundry room. Goodness knows nobody else is going to come in there while I am in there for fear of being put to work. So… I take my time “sorting” and “rotating from washer to dryer,” reading all the while.  🙂
Thanks for the great giveaway, and Happy Holidays to all!

  39. Lisa N. says:

My favorite place to read is in my room, curled up on the bed with the door closed.

  40. Sophy says:

    In my antiwinter bunker, yeah!
