Hanukkah, oh Hanukkah, there’s a lot of family during Hanukkah, so maybe it’s time to go hide and read.
To continue the festive merriment to celebrate reading, both paper and digital, I have a digital reader AND a case with a light – so you can hide in a closet and read. Not that I’ve ever done that, no. Not me!
All you have to do to win is leave a comment, and I’ll select a winner each day. These contests are open to international winners, and I will do my best to ship this week, provided people send me their addresses promptly.
Standard disclaimers apply: I’m not being compensated for this giveaway. If anything, my gift is exceptional support of the United States Postal Service (Happy Hanukkah, US Mail Carriers!). No shirt, no shoes, no service. Professional driver: do not attempt. Do not turn over. For ventilation, open window, or maybe a door.
Ahoy! Contest the sixth!
On the Sixth Night of Hanukkah, Smart Bitches Gave to Me: A refurbished Sony 300 Pocket, with a new case with an onboard light. Note: this is not the touchscreen Pocket; this is the previous model with the buttons. And, it is PINK. (I love this shade of pink on the Sonys. It’s awesome.)
Just leave a comment below, and tell me your favorite place to hide and read, and you’re entered to win. Comments close in 24 hours, but fear not, there’s another book – paper or digital – giveaway coming soon. Because Hanukkah lasts for eight crazy nights, and I will admit, I’m having a good time over here.
Happy Hanukkah, and Happy Reading!

I wonder why we all hide in the bathroom…maybe because the door has a lock on it? Ah, the bliss of a locked door.
I’d have to say that one of my favorite places to hide and read a book is in our family room/sun room. Since it’s a south facing room, it’s always warm and well lit with furniture you can flop onto in almost any position you’d like, plus it’s in a low traffic area so you’re almost guaranteed to go undisturbed!
I don’t really hide and read too much, but there is this one spot tucked into the corner of the couch, right under the light and also where the heat is, so I can just curl up there for ours without getting chilly. I just need to install a mini-fridge within arm’s reach and I’ll be all set!
I don’t have a hiding place but I dream of having a little corner in the bedroom that I can make my little reading nook.
My fave place to go and read is the local public library – there is this comfy seating arrangement towards the back and I can read uninterrupted and in peace, without being constantly disturbed by family demands.
At home: the bathroom. The only good reading chair in the house is right in the middle of the living room, where all the television watching, children’s playing, etc. takes place; this is something I need to remedy!
My other favorite places to hide and read: a number of restaurants near my workplace. I go there for lunch by myself, and I’m uninterrupted for at least half an hour, well supplied with food & drink, and able to focus on the story. The main drawback is that it doesn’t work for library books—too much chance of dripping grease or salsa on it.
(Hes26? Okay, works for me….)
Definitely the bathroom. And what a gorgeous colour!
The bathroom, definitely. Perhaps the only place in the house to be undisturbed. 🙂
I like to hide in my bed to read. It is so peaceful and quiet in my bedroom when the door is closed.
Cute li’l corner of the living room sofa, with a blanket and cat on my lap, and I’m all set:)
hmmm, town99: I’m sure I’ve read about at least 99 towns on that sofa!
I love to curl up at read right by my dog’s bed because she keeps my toes warm.
Away from home – at a favorite restaurant, which is italian, and just sit and read romance. 😀
I have a lovely sunroom where I love to curl up and read. I love seeing the pretty little birds outside as I let the stories carry me away.
In a cozy and sometimes bustling coffeehouse downtown!
Any and all windowseats!
Currently, it’s just my husband, myself, and the dog in the house, hiding completely unnecessary. We have an overstuffed chair and a half that is my favorite place to curl up.
However, the question reminds me of growing up in a house full of siblings, when I would have competed murder for anything as romantic as a window seat or quiet reading nook. Instead we had… The bathroom. Only room in the house with a lock, and you could plausibly pretend you’d only been, well, going to the bathroom (not reading and shirking chores).
Thanks for reminding me how much I love adulthood!
My favorite place to hide and read is my bedroom, not very imaginative, but my bed’s really comfy.
There’s not really a place to hide in my apartment but I love curling up on the couch and reading, especially on a rainy day.
I love to read in the living room on my fave recliner. I have a table beside it for my Coke and snack, a reading lamp and blankie!
I am fortunate, I live alone so I don’t need to hide when I am reading – I only need to reach my flat 😉
A big comfy chair, in front of the fireplace, with my cat curled in my lap = heaven!
I don’t have a favorite place to hide and read! Sob! It used to be the bathtub, but I moved a couple of years ago and the tub I have now is only useful for corralling shower spray.
Favorite place to read? Right now out in the garage (comfy chair) so as to avoid the dogs, cats, and everyone else in the house.
I also hide in the tub behind a locked bathroom door. If you don’t lock it, rude family members come in! My sister still gets the skeleton key sometimes even if I do lock it. Sigh. No privacy anywhere.
I used to hide to read. We had an old, metal jungle gym in the backyard. I took sheets and safety pins and clothespins and made a wonderfully comfortable enclosed hammock in its bars, and hung suspended for hours. Enclosed, I could pretend I was /anywhere/: on board a sailing ship with the ocean surrounding me; in a wagon of a gypsy caravan; stowing away on a spaceship… Wherever I was going, two or three books and a sandwich sustained me every time.
I’ve gone pink in my bedroom for the first time in my life, so why the heck not 🙂
On the sofa in the living room. Very comfy.
The basement, in a cozy bed, under the comforter 😀 I really really want this. It’s on my xmas wishlist!
In my bedroom at night using only my book light—with the door closed, my daughter thinks I’m asleep & leaves me alone 🙂 …& did I say I love pink, too?
Thanks!
Wow, now that’s a Hanukkah gift. If we have another ice storm that cuts the power I’ll be good to go. Actually I already have a pocket reader so I would love to be able to give one to my mom. Of course, I’d keep the cover for myself. Would that be called degifting, ungifting, or just plain old sneaky?
Favorite place to hide and read, usually in the tub since no one bothers me and I get more reading done without the pile of questions and I can ignore my phone, email, etc.
A digital reader w/ a pink case AND a light?! Perfection.
I go to Starbucks. It’s the only place the kids won’t follow me to.
I read on my bed all the time, that’s where it’s comfiest. I’d read on a sofa if my family had one but all we have are hard wooden furniture 🙁
I hide in our room and read. Comfy bed, warm blankets, good book – it’s heaven.
Plus, I love pink!
The comfy chair in the guest bedroom, hot tea on the side table, cat on lap…
I don’t hide to read, I usually just sit somewhere in the living room.
When I was a kid, I’d climb up on top of my dad’s construction stuff and be as high off the ground as I could. People never looked up.
Now, I read curled up on the bed in our spare bedroom (which also doubles as my library.)
I like to hide in my room and lock the door, to keep the roommates out.
My favorite place to hide and read is in the car on those rare but wonderful occasions when I’m actually early for something and prepared.
