Smart Bitches Hanukkah Festival Giveaway: Part One!

imageHanukkah oh Hanukkah, you’re early as what the hell now this year! Which means… it’s fun and games time here at the Hot Pink Palace of Bitchery!

Tonight begins the festival of Hanukkah, wherein Jewish folks light the menorah, consume fried things, and celebrate for eight nights. And since the Jewish folks are known as The People of the Book, I figured, let’s celebrate reading, eh? I’ve been saving up items all year for the festive merriment to celebrate reading, both paper and digital. Are you ready to rumble? I hope so!

These contests are super easy. All you have to do to win is leave a comment, and I’ll select a winner each day. These contests are open to international winners, and I will do my best to ship this week, provided people send me their addresses promptly.

Standard disclaimers: I’m not being compensated for this giveaway. If anything, my gift is exceptional support of the United States Postal Service (Happy Hanukkah, US Mail Carriers!). Despite popular wisdom, Jewish folks don’t traditionally dance the hora on Hanukkah. Your mileage may vary. Slippery when wet. Bon Jovi was not harmed in the making of this giveaway. Hanukkah candles never fit in the menorahs, no matter what you do. A latke a day is probably not good for your cardiovascular health.

Ahoy! Contest the first!

imageOn the First Night of Hanukkah, Smart Bitches Gave to Me: A brand spanking new Sony!

From the fine people at Sony, I have here a PRS-650, better known as the new Sony Touch. It’s red. It’s very sexy. And it can be yours as part of the Smart Bitches Hanukkah Festival.

Just leave a comment below, and tell me what book you’d buy or borrow first, and you’re entered to win. Comments close in 24 hours, but fear not, there’s another book – paper or digital – giveaway coming soon. Because Hanukkah lasts for eight crazy nights, and I have lost my ever lovin’ mind.

Happy Hanukkah, and Happy Reading!

  1. Jennifer Logan says:

Wow that’s tough, probably the first book I would but would be something Nora Roberts or JD Robb. Most likely Naked in Death.

  2. MIchelle Smith says:

I would have to say Matched by Ally Condie. I heard it was a pretty good book, then Mckettrick’s choice by Linda Lael Miller. Then all of Lorelei James books. There are so many really don’t know where to start.

  3. zinemama says:

I would order up as soon as it comes out One Was a Soldier. Because ever since I read the first Julia Spencer-Fleming (right after giving birth) I have loooved Rev. Clare and Sheriff Russ. Even if they are now permanently associated in my mind with breastfeeding.

  4. SaraC says:

Happy Chanukah! I’ve been looking forward to When Harry Met Molly, so I’d probably buy that first…

  5. Tasnim Rahman says:

I would download Tea Rose by Jennifer Donnelly. I’ve been meaning to read it but the book is so heavy! 🙁

  6. Pharaby says:

Ooh, I’ve been lusting after an e-reader for forever; the laptop is hard to snuggle in bed with at 3 am, in the middle of some “OMG, I just found a new series on the weekend, MUST READ THEM ALL NOW” frenzy.

When I have a second from teaching, the new Laura Anne Gillman Vinearts book. Then the new Briggs when it comes out, and the second Stacia Kane, and…Xmas break is coming soon, right?!

(“church49” as in “Books are my chapel, and clearly I should worship more with 49 downloads on a new e-reader!)

  7. Tania says:

    I want that eReader!!! (please)

  8. Rachel says:

I would put all the georgette heyers on it so that I could always find something to read that would be witty and wonderful.

  9. LGHart says:

While flying to DC this afternoon, I read in the American Way magazine that the Sony Reader is in the 2010 Top Gifts list.  Woo-hoo!!

  10. Mel L. says:

Happy Hanukkah! The first night’s presents are always AWESOME! So, I’m desperately awaiting Maya Bank’s new book that comes out in one week!!! Its “No Place To Run.” I’m moving to South Korea in 3 months to teach English and an ebook reader would definitely save me some room in my suitcase!

  11. Lil' Deviant says:

    *claps hands*
I would buy Amanda Quick’s Scandal for the book club.
    Happy Holidays everyone!

  12. BB says:

I’d probably go with some of Judith McNaught’s books…most are mine are in tatters! Probably Whitney, My Love or one of the more “recent” ones like Every Breath You Take

  13. ~ames~ says:

    Happy Hanukkah and great contest!

I’d buy Gini Koch’s Alien Tango!  Loved Touched by an Alien and can’t wait for the second book.

  14. Tiss Treib says:

I have a long wishlist and it’s hard to pick just one book, but I have a Jess Dee Book that I would really like to read.

  15. Lara K says:

Thanks for the giveaway!  My first book would be Outlander… No wait, Shadowfever…  Or the new Maya Banks… It’s so hard to pick just one! :o)

  16. Kristy B. says:

Anything!  but I’m in the mood for some cowboy so I’ll have to say anything by Linda Lael Miller—you know I think the only thing that could make a ebook better would be if it could come with that new-book scent.

  17. Emily says:

Red!  Red!  Red!  And on International AIDS Day.  I have no idea on what book, but I can get library books to go on a Sony.  And a bunch of SF Romance that is only available in eBooks.  Red!

  18. Brook says:

I would the newest Patricia Briggs novel I have been putting off buying.  Or maybe I would start with one of he Zoe Archer books since everyone has been really positive aabout her books.

  19. Jade Tyger says:

Ooh. I’d definitely get Dark Road to Darjeeling by Deanna Raybourn. I am /loving/ the Lady Julia Grey series…

future76—I have way more than 76 books in my TBR!

  20. Jen B. says:

That is a tough one!  My TBR is huge but my next book I have written in my calendar to buy is No Place To Run by Maya Banks.  It comes out next week and I just love to buy books as soon as they come out!

    Jen B.

  21. AndiK says:

Probably Lauren Willig’s The Mischief of the Mistletoe because I’m reading The Betrayal of the Blood Lily right now. 🙂

  22. Bernie n says:

Dreamfever, by Karen Marie Moning which comes out soooo soon! Although I don’t think I could wait that long, so more likely I would download Lord Perfect, as I’m working my way through Loretta Chase.

  23. Sadi says:

The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson because it’s HUGE and I literally can’t hold it without hurting myself or something by Jennifer Crusie just because I’m greedy and I want to preserve her books electronically.

    large46 – all I want for Xmas

  24. Spider says:

I’ve had a hankering to reread the Anne of Green Gables books lately, so I think I would get those first.  The relationship between Anne and Gil was probably my first romance!

  25. I would buy Last Sacrifice by Richelle Mead. Been looking forward to this book for a while.

  26. SusannaG says:

Gone with the Wind.  Because my print copy is just too heavy!  (It’s hardback.)

  27. Lynne says:

I think the first book I would download is Lawyers in Love: The Prosecutors :: Ann Jacobs

I think they are the perfect books for an ereader.

  28. Christine L. says:

I’d download Jill Shalvis’ Simply Irresistible!

  29. Sel says:

So many books! So little time!

My favourite authors have just come out with their novels in paperback, so I’ve already bought those (although I’d be buying them in eBook format just as soon as I could afford it!) and so I’d get “To Catch A Thief” by Christina Skye because…well, a body’s gotta start somewhere and I have a not-so-secret fondness for military ops guys…

Although I’d really adore any recs you have for adventure-romances featuring a heroine who isn’t a civilian – or, if she is, is weapons competent, doesn’t squeal in a fight or panic, and isn’t so squeamish, but takes the practical and sensible route (eg. changing out of her high heels and evening gown before traipsing all over top-secret facilities hunting down serial killers) and still gets her man! (Both protagonist male and antagonist male, if you know what I mean!)

  30. Julie says:

I’d have to start with some Georgette Heyer books!

  31. Kristin says:

Too many choices!  I might pick up Lisa Kleypas’ new one, or The Hunger Games since my brother has been trying to get me to read it, or whatever else strikes my fancy… easy access is the point right!  =)

  32. JaneDrew says:

I have a confession. I am a complete E-virgin. Yes, really. I have never even _handled_ an e-reader; my only experience has been seeing them from a distance, lurking seductively behind glass cabinets. Oh, I’ve thought longingly about them—the lure of an entirely new space to fill up with books… the bliss of being able to carry an entire trip’s worth of reading in one sleek, well-put-together package…. the ability to finally take advantage of all the sales and contests and super-spiffy E-Book offers that get mentioned here on SmartBooks…

Alas, post-grad-school debt means that shiny new toys are pretty much out of financial reach at the moment—even though I currently have a bus commute to work which would be perfect for getting some reading done!

Of course, being a voracious—nay, promiscuous reader (will go to bed with any book!)—and being completely unfamiliar with what a “good choice” would be for my, er, dE-flowering—I’m at a total loss about what single work to pick. So. I say, if I win, we make it a Holiday Bitches’ Choice—I’ll say something about my reading background and interests, and happily take suggestions for my first venture into new tech—and will cheerfully review both Reader and book for the edification and/or amusement of this august company? *grin*

  33. Sarah Ferraro says:

Psyche in a Dress is the book I’m most looking forward to getting next.  It’s short, but really intense.

  34. Sianna says:

One Was A Soldier – Julia Spencer Fleming!

Even though the release is in April, that is totally the book I really, really want to read next! Other choices include American Gods and Patricia Briggs’ Mercy Thompson series, and anything by Jayne Ann Krentz.

  35. Marcy says:

Anything by Jennifer Cruisie that I don’t already have and some Judith Merkle Riley, I think… yaay!

  36. Erin says:

I’m not sure what would be the first romance novel I’d buy, but I do know that within mere moments of owning an e-reader, I’d be the happy owner of the complete works of Bill Bryson, David Sedaris, and Dorothy Sayers.

  37. Selinarah says:

Just one, eh? You are a cruel taskmistress. 🙂
I did get distracted by the shiny new add for PC Cast’s new Goddess Summoning book. So, I’d probably get that, followed quickly by Terry Pratchet’s I Shall Wear Midnight.

And then, raid the entire digital collection of the library while I figure out what else to buy.

  38. Galadriel says:

I’d actually refresh my memory of those Dorchester authors who have broken away and relaunched their books, and buy them from them directly.

Happy Hanukkah and Happy Holidays, everyone!

  39. Ana says:

I’d get some textbooks for the upcoming semester!  Not very exciting, I know, but so much easier than lugging about a heavy bag full o’ books!

  40. RT says:

The Last Days of Summer – Steve Kluger. It’s not a romance but it’s got 2 VERY cute love stories, in addition to a helluva lot of laughter 🙂
