Merry Christmas Kindling!

Book Cover Merry Christmas! Want a Kindle?

Since I did a straight week-plus of giveaways for Hanukkah, I figured I should have a present for you for Christmas. How about a chance to win a generation 3 Kindle? All you have to do is leave a comment and tell me your favorite gift received or given this year, and I’ll pick a winner on Sunday 26 December. Contest runs until 4am 26 December 2010 EST.

Standard disclaimers apply: I’m not being compensated for this giveaway, and I don’t secretly belong to Amazon, though if I did, I would SO be prime-able. I’d be Optimus Prime-able. Socks are recommended. If you keep making that face your face will freeze like that. I have no desire for figgy pudding, thank you.

Good luck, happy reading, and merry, merry Christmas to those celebrating today!

I think my favorite gift I’m giving this year is a drum set to my 5 y.o. She loves drums and has wanted them for 2 years.

    I would LOVE a Kindle

  2. Brandie says:

I’ve asked (semi-jokingly) for a pony every year since I was five, and this year I finally got one … it’s only six inches high, and it’s purple and pink, but by God, it’s a pony!

  3. Jenny C. says:

Fav gift given is one of those Keurig coffee makers for my dad – he loves gadgets and loves coffee. 🙂

  4. Laura Danger says:

My friend/quasimaternal figure gave me something she brought back from Bulgaria.  It’s one of the few gifts I’ll get this year, and it is the first thing I’m going to unwrap.

  5. Midknyt says:

I was unfortunately too unemployed to be able to really get anyone anything, though I did make my roomates Horde keychains because they are that kind of nerdy.  I hope they like them.  🙂

  6. AmberG says:

This year, for my fiance who is the biggest Godzilla fan in the entire world, has all the movies and a bunch of action figures, I had a friend of mine knit him a plush Godzilla. It’s huge, and cuddly instead of fire breathing. Sadly, it will not arrive in time for the actual day, but a slightly late gift is worth the awesomeness of this thing, I think.

I can’t really afford any other Christmas gifts, so instead i’m making the biggest damn feast EVER (you should see this turkey, holy cow), and hosting christmas for all the friends away from home this year. I also am spending all day today baking, so we’ll have a painfully fattening array of cookies and other sweets for dessert, and to give away over the next week or so.

It’s going to be an incredibly fun Christmas this year.

  7. I can’t wait until my husband sees the Four Ponies of the Apocalypse shirt I got him.

    Thanks for all the giveaways!

  8. Grace says:

I’m giving my husband a photo canvas of our son in his Halloween costume…it’s adorable.

  9. lorenet says:

I got my 11 year old grandson a Kindle.  I spent some time setting up his account and getting the classic free books that I thought an 11 year old would want to read.  He has already opened his gift.  He said “there are books on here that I want to read”.  It made me feel good.  Now if he just doesn’t break it.

  10. willaful says:

My favorite gift was sneaking my husband’s favorite out-of-print book onto his Kindle.  I hid it in the “contemporary romance” shelf he made for me to use. 🙂 To “wrap” it, I took a picture of the book cover on the kindle, printed it out and wrapped it. The picture came out a bit obscure and I can’t wait to see how long it takes him to figure it out/find it.

  11. Galadriel says:

My favourite gift so far this holiday season has simply been being able to come home to spend time with my loved ones.

  12. Kristy B says:

my favorite that I gave this year was a digital picture frame for my grandma filled with pictures of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

  13. Lina says:

I haven’t received gifts from anyone yet, so I’ll have to say my favorite gift is one I gave myself: a 30 minute massage with a fabulous massage therapist.  Heaven.

Favorite gift given: went in on an e-reader for my Dad with my sisters—and a $15 non-resident membership to Philadelphia’s library, which will allow him to download tons of free ebooks!.

  14. Rebecca says:

Yesterday was my last day at work before Christmas.  A colleague gave everyone in the department Christmas cards – no big deal.  But inside each card was a coupon for a free Dunkin Donuts coffee.  A new Dunkin Donuts just opened across the street, and since we are all coffee addicts (our days start early, finish late, and don’t have time for proper food frequently), it was the perfect gift – thoughtful, convenient, and kindly.  She’s awesome.

  15. BJ says:

It’s not getting a gift. have too much stuff already, so my brother and I decided to not exchange gifts and instead make donations to Doctors without Borders and to the Heifer Project.

  16. peggy h says:

I got a Kindle and a Sony Reader!  Now I can read ALL my previously-purchased books in all formats!!  But DH has been buying more Kindle books that he reads on his iPhone, and has been giving my Kindle thoughtful looks.  I think it’s just a matter of time before he gets one…would love to win one for him now!  Thanks for this chance!!

  17. Lindz says:

My sister (29) and I (31)  made one of those FAO Schwartz’ “Whatnot” muppet for our dad (67) that looks just like him.

Dad raised us in a single-parent household.  Sesame Street and the Muppets were a big part of our childhood, and the various Muppet movies and seasons of the Muppet Show have been gifts to him over the past years.  Last year, he gave us both copies of the 40th anniversary book on Sesame Street.

Dad’s personalized muppet is our way of telling him thank you for being an excellent father (and reminding him of childhood magic).

  18. Megan R. says:

My favorite gift this year is the USB canon I got my dad.  It aims and shoots with the mouse.  Good times.

  19. Favorite gift received is coming home to Hawaii after an emergency trip to Tampa.

    Mele Kalikimaka!

  20. Emily E says:

I got my sweetie a Kindle.  Now he keeps offering to put books on it for me.  But how would we ever arrange that share?  Serious relationship test.

  21. Amy P. says:

I love giving my kids the gingerbread house kits (plus extra candy) – hours of fun and they love to make them!

  22. Sonya says:

This year I embroidered a little scene for each of my close friends, with LED circuits sewn into them, so they light up. My favourite gift this year wasn’t really a gift (well you could call it a gift from the great cosmos) – my flight was redirected to Iceland, so I got a free four stay hotel stay in Reykjavik, and got to have a relaxing day at the Blue Lagoon!

  23. Allyson White says:

Best gift given: a wooded giraffe bank that my 3 year old saw at a craft fair and has been talking about ever since.

Best gift received: My parents are helping us buy a new house. 🙂

  24. Barbara says:

My favorite gift given this year has to be a camera for my son—he’s going to study abroad next semester and I’ll be able to live vicariously through his pictures!  The gift that keeps on giving!

Happy holidays to you and yours!

    Barbara

  25. Copa says:

My mom and I always get each other pajama pants, it’s tradition and I love it.

  26. MarieC says:

The best gift given: Rum Balls. I make them for friends and family. The people I give them to know the time it takes to make and chocolate coat. Hopefully, they taste good too (after ‘tasting’ the rum for quality assurance, I can never tell).

  27. miz_geek says:

For my niece, I found the Song of the Lioness quartet by Tamora Pierce at my local used book store.  For my nephew, a t-shirt with pi written out to the first 4000 digits.  I think they’ll both love them!

  28. JamiSings says:

He hasn’t opened it yet, of course, but I got my new step-nephew a pack of ten Hot Wheels. He loves Hot Wheels but doesn’t have a whole lot. So I can’t wait to hear about his reaction to ten of them.

  29. CrookedGoose says:

My favorite gift this is year is one I’m giving my 3 year old daughter. She has fallen in love with the dour St. Thomas More (her first crush) so I bought her a medal with his picture on it and a matching silver chain. (It will most likely be destroyed by Christmas night).

I think I’m raising a future romance reader when her tastes already lean towards the brooding male, who actually is a saint.

  30. Billie says:

My grandson wanted the machine to make dipping dots ice
cream.  I can’t wait to taste his creation.

  31. darkheather says:

Best Christmas present I received this year (and possibly EVER) is a Hoover carpet cleaner from my mom.

She came to visit earlier this month. I had just gotten my first dog ever, Cooper (I have always been a cat person), and so I was dealing with “accidents” on a daily basis. I off-handedly said I should get a carpet cleaner, and she, with her attention to everything I said, left me more than enough money for one when she left. (She left it on my bookshelf, knowing I’d find it soon.)

So yeah, boring. I got it from Amazon 2 weekends ago. But then a couple days later my new puppy started having seizures. Bad ones. Grand mal bad ones. And whenever he had a seizure he’d mess himself. So off all of a sudden I”m cleaning my carpets daily. We finally got the seizures under control through medication (took a week), but the lack of walks and the whole only-going-while-convulsing thing screwed with his GI track, so he had the runs for a week. HOLY CRAP! There was a lot of crap. So I was cleaning my carpets every hour. Thankfully today that finally stopped.

So now I have a (medicatedly) healthy puppy and a carpet cleaner that has been used dozens of times in the past 2 weeks.

    Best. Christmas. Present. Ever.*

*Note: I’m not sure if I’m talking about the carpet cleaner or the fact that my dog will live. I mean, the carpet cleaner was a definite Christmas gift. Cooper? I’m very thankful he’s going to live (last weekend there was a great deal of doubt about that), but my whole agnosticism prevents me from saying that he’s a Gift from God. Granted he recovered the week of Christmas, but the seizures also stopped on the same day as the winter solstice/lunar eclipse, so the pagan gods were much more timely.

  32. EvaBaby says:

Favorite gift given: My mother in law is a nurse on on her feet every day and constantly complains of lower back pain.  We got her 12 sessions with a massage therapist. The therapist will come to her house once a month for the whole next year and give her a 1 hour massage.

Favorite gift gotten: Not for myself per se, but my my SIL got my two children the entire seven book set of Harry Potter audio books read by the incomparable Jim Dale.

  33. Caitie says:

My roommate is a wine drinker.  A BIG wine drinker.  I’ve also sucked him in to watching “Cougar Town” with me – a show about BIG wine drinkers.  On that show, Courteney Cox’s character drinks wine from Big Carl – aka a ridiculously oversized wineglass (actually a candleholder, according to an interview with the show’s production designer).

For Christmas, I found him his very own Big Carl.  We’re only going to use it for special occasions.  Which means, “It’s Tuesday!”

  34. Christy says:

The favorite gift I gave was an wi-fi embedded blu-ray player.

  35. Bookluvrq says:

    Cuddle Duds. Best PJs ever.

  36. Julia says:

I had bought a Magic Wand Remote Control for the TV (change channels with a gesture!), as a joint present for my little sister and Dad, both huge Harry Potter fans.  My dad passed away just before this Thanksgiving, and now I’m giving it to my sister from him.  Dad was always a fan of gadgets (he was borrowing my nook to try out the week before he died) and he was the best gift-giver in the family.  So, in his spirit of gadgetry and presents, I can’t wait for my sister to open this present.

  37. mingqi says:

My friends and family don’t really do christmas gifts (and I only give gifts to my two youngest cousins out of the 20+ that I have), but i really enjoyed the starbucks giftcard that my supervisors got me.  I usually don’t buy anything from there unless I need to use the bathroom or have a gift card!

  38. Amy S. says:

I gave my nieces and nephew a early present this year.  Their basketball goal had tore up so I bought them a new one and gave it to them early so they could play with it before it got too cold.  The kids loved opening it early and seeing what they had.  They love playing basketball and there’s not really a whole lot in the town for the kids to do.  They’ve enjoyed playing with it.

  39. Niveau says:

    But… I haven’t done any present-ing yet this year!

My only countable entry, and even that is suspect, is that I made a gift for my dad to give his parents. It’s a miniature crocheted teddy bear, white with bright orange hair (we’re Scottish, it’s crazy how much the bear looks like us), and a tiny tie and tam patterned in my family’s plaid. So I gave someone a gift to give to someone else.

And this ‘present’ will truly become invalid when he pays me what he said he would for the bear 🙂

  40. Ingrid says:

This year, I sent away for a Columbia University sweat-shirt for my fourteen-year-old niece.  It arrived just a couple of days ago, and it’s the softest, fluffiest thing, just the right shade of Navy blue, with a big white “NYC” letters on the back.

She’s going to love it, almost as much as I love seeing her grow into a young woman with purpose and style.
