Sony Reader: Eat, Read, Sleep

imageSony contacted me about doing a giveaway in celebration of the premiere of Eat Pray Love, which hits theatres this week. A Sony Pocket! In sexy silver! With a leather case (that is really a beautiful shade of blue on the outside) and two download codes for both of Elizabeth Gilbert’s books! Woo hoo for digital reading devices!

imageI know many of you are paper reading fanatics – which is absolutely awesome with sauce – but if you’re curious about trying digital reading but haven’t gathered all your pennies into one place to buy one, here’s a chance to win one, AND get a beautiful leather cover (can you tell I really like that blue?) with two free books.

All you have to do is leave a comment here and tell me, if you won, which book would be the first book you’d put on your Sony Reader, aside from the two free downloads? A romance? A mystery? A book on how to make your own leather Sony Reader cover with skulls and crossbones? I’ll pick one at random and announce the winner on Friday 20 August (Good Lord willing, creeks don’t rise, etc). You’ve got 48 hours to tell me which book gets to be “FIRST!” in your Reader.

Disclaimer: I’m not being compensated for this giveaway. I don’t even get the pretty blue leather cover, much as I love that color like whoa and nelly. Tie your shoes. Machine wash cold, lay flat to dry. Do not dry clean. Not available at salons. Digital ink on 100% post-consumer bytes. Melts in your mouth, not in your hand.  Not recommended for children. Prerecorded for this time zone. This broadcast has been reformatted to fit your screen. No solicitors. You can learn more about the bundle at the Sony Style store, and you can really really like Sony Readers on Facebook.

First book?  Just this minute, I think it would be Dorothy Sayers’ Gaudy Night.

Ask me tomorrow, it’ll be something else, like The Blue Sword and The Hero and the Crown by Robin McKinley.  And I’m waiting impatiently for Gail Carriger’s Blameless.  And And And…

  2. Tessa K. says:

I don’t know- firsts are so hard… my list of to-be-read books is so long, I wouldn’t know where to start… maybe Tessa Dare’s Three Nights With a Scoundrel, which I haven’t had a chance to get yet. Or Louisa Edwards’s Just One Taste, which isn’t out until the end of the month… It will really depend on what I am in the mood for if/when I get it.

  3. Diane/Anonym2857 says:

So many choices, but I’d probably have to go with a Nora… Northern Lights or Tribute, perhaps.

If those are unavailable for some reason, I’d prolly got with Bet Me by Crusie, or Lord of Scoundrels by Chase.

I’d rather read a ‘familiar’ book the first time out on the new reading device.  That way I could get lost in the story, but still have a part of my brain free to play with the new toy and learn all the buttons and how they work.

    Diane 🙂

  4. Paula says:

First book will probably be Mine To Take by Dara Joy. Love that book. Then that whole series. Something about the hero’s ability to ‘enhance’…Oh my.

  5. KelseyMichelle says:

I would download “Anyone But You” by Jennifer Crusie. I got the suggestion from your website and it was perfect for me! I have a rescue dog, so I loved Fred, and I am a sucker for old movies!

  6. Kira says:

Hmm… I’m not really into the romance genre much, but then I haven’t been into much of anything since my daughter was born, other than my daughter. I’d have to say the first book , well books really, I’d try to find for an e-reader would be the Prydain Chronicles by Lloyd Alexander. I must be feeling some nostalgia for my childhood. They were some of my favorites as when I was younger and I find myself wanting to re-read them oh so badly!

  7. aislin says:

First book would probably be Suzanne Collins Mockingjay… followed by Austen and various and sundry Noras.

  8. Wendy says:

I’m a bit limited by geographical restrictions, but if it turns out to be available to me (and I often don’t find out until I’m the last page of my purchase, irritatingly), it would be Crusie’s Maybe This Time. I already know I can’t get Connie Willis’s Black Out…

  9. Tina says:

Ok, this totally warrants de-lurking for a comment!  I would probably get my favorite series – Laurie R. King’s Mary Russell series.  I’m not a huge fan of the original Sherlock Holmes material, but I enjoy reading most of the pastiches and take-offs of the original, and the Mary Russell series is my favorite of them all.  The romance isn’t the focus, but it’s lovely nonetheless.  I would love to be able to have this series at my fingertips 100% of the time!

  10. meoskop's cousin says:

I don’t know if my cousin can get to a computer in the 48 hours – so I am randomly entering on her behalf.

SHE would probably put The New World Translation of The Bible. I would probably give it to her with Alison’s Wonderland, um, mislabeled. Because every study group can use a little contemporary literature for spicier conversation.

  11. Christy says:

If I won, the first download would be “The Titan’s Curse” by Rick Riordan.  I’ve been waiting to get this one and I wouldn’t be able to resist putting it on my new toy!

  12. kathleen says:

Robin McKinley’s Beauty.  It’s about the way love sneaks up on you quietly and then makes you her bitch.
No, seriously, it’s the beauty and the beast story, but it’s a gentle love that you don’t realize until you risk losing it.  Also, the beast’s library contains all books, ever, including ones that haven’t been written yet, which is how I think of e-readers.

  13. bethany says:

Oooh!  Definitely the latest Lisa Kleypas.  Definitely. 🙂

  14. My first book would probably be Lynsay Sand’s upcoming Born to Bite because I am probably more excited to read it than I should be… but I’ve been curious about Armand since he was first mentioned in the series. I will admit that the cover creeps me a bit too much for comfort so an e-book is perfect so I don’t have to look my book in the face as it were.

  15. Mel L. says:

I made a New Years resolution to myself to read 100 Great Works of Fiction before the year was out…that’s not including the hundreds of Fabulous Trashy Works of Fiction that I need no resolution to make sure I read. I’m currently working through my list so the next read that I’d put on my spiffy new electronc reading device would be JA’s Mansfield Park.

  16. Adele says:

Wish You Were Here by Lani Diane Rich would be the first book I’d buy to put on the reader.  After that? I have no idea. 🙂

  17. kitzie says:

My first book would be Pride and Prejudice, the romanciest of them all, in honor of my daughter Elizabeth Bennet.

Then it would totally be Mockingjay.  I am just itching for that book to come out!  Maybe followed by Devil’s Cub, which I rediscovered because of a review here!

  18. berite2 says:

I’d download “The Search” by Roberts.  Can’t beat the Nora!

  19. Dee says:

Hmm, what a tough choice. I think it would be Noami Novik’s newest Temeraire novel which I anxiously anticipating getting soon. After that? Well, too many choices but probably some of the books I’ve added to my wishlist thanks to recommendations here.

  20. Kat says:

The first “new” book I would want to put on it would be Ted’s book Call Me Irresistible by SEP, but that isn’t out till January.  Fortunately, I have lots of books already on my computer that could go on it until then!

  21. Megan Hoffman Rounds says:

It would have to be Jaqueline Carey’s Kushiel’s Dart.  It was just a beautiful, epic book.

  22. Cakes says:

I know its not very fun, but Strunk and White’s Elements of Style. I need it for school. *sigh*

  23. Ulrike says:

Since Cryoburn  isn’t due out until Oct. 19, I’m going to have to go with Tongues of Serpents.

  24. L Feign says:

Actually, I have your book Beyond Heaving Bosoms on my Amazon wish list (yes, really!), so out of gratitude for the Sony e-reader, I’ll buy the e-book version…though obviously not the Kindle edition. I guess Barnes & Noble have an epub edition or something.

(You’re thinking…why’s it on my wishlist, why haven’t I bought it yet? Well, sweethearts, a bit of foreplay enhances the pleasure payoff)

  25. Lobo says:

My first choice would be American Godsby Neil Gaiman, the only book of his I do not own. Then I would go beserk and go bankrupt because I would go through my wishlist of about a 100 titles.

  26. Susan F. says:

Hmmm…I would probably have to get the last two Percy Jackson books by Rick Riordan.  I’ve read the first three and keep looking for used copies of the last two, but haven’t found them yet.  Winning an eReader would be justification for my purchases.  🙂  Definitely romance after that though.

  27. Susan S says:

The first book I would get would be The Hunger Games since I’ve seen it everywhere since reading up on it here, and through this blog, at foreveryoungadult

  28. orangehands says:

If it arrives before the release date, Jennifer Crusie’s Maybe This Time. If not, I think I’ll go with Loretta Chase’s latest.

  29. Megs says:

Gaudy Night by Dorothy L. Sayers, closely followed by Strong Poison, Have His Carcase, and Busman’s Honeymoon. Because the book where the hero and heroine finally get together is always the most satisfying to reread.

  30. Julia says:

The first book on it would be Rampant by Diana Peterfreund because it’s ridiculous, awesome, really, really bad and has killer unicorns.

  31. Jen La says:

I would probably get a romance that I’ve read a hundred times before in paper so that way if the paper ever got destroyed I could read it over and over again in digital. Probably something by Nora Roberts or Sherrilyn Kenyon.

  32. Stephanie says:

I’d start with a new or upcoming release, like Jenny Crusie’s “Maybe this Time”. Of course I’d quickly move on to….well….just about anything. The convenience and speed of a download just gets me all kinds of tingly when I think about not having to find time to go to the bookstore (which rarely happens any more *sigh*)

  33. Angie says:

I would download Janet Evanovich’s Sizzling Sixteen.

  34. Faellie says:

It would have to be a comfort read, so Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility would be first on board.

far82 – No, actually, so far its 428 comments

  35. Faellie says:

First book would be a comfort read for a long train journey – Jane Austen and Sense and Sensibility would be perfect.

    Present42 – no, present comments 428!

  36. Liza says:

I’d pick a new book that I wanted desperately to read the day I got the reader.

What if it took a long time to receive the actual reader down here in the wilds of Florida.  What if a hurrincane warning was issued?  I’d have already stocked up my emergency box with books.  I might already have read the book I pick today.

  37. Very exciting contest, and a great question. Although I love reading romances, I’m going to download The Secret. I haven’t read it in a while, and I need a boatload of positive karma right now. Thank you!

  38. Kathleen says:

Commence begging and pleading and promises of whatever form of personal servitude you desire….NOW.

For the record, I lust after my man’s i-Pad, but haven’t got the scratch to pay for one.  I tried out one of his free downloads (Regina in the Suns) which was a free vampire-romancy thing just to see how I liked it.  But I can only read a chapter at a time, because the i-Pad goes to work with Honey every day.  Greatest joy?  Oh, hot steamy cover art that I DO NOT have to hide from my young, precocious, and annoyingly curious small people.

What to read?  On my TBR list:  Wildthorne by Jane Eagland;  The Hunger Games;  Flowers from the Storm, by Laura Kinsale; The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake; a whole lot of super-steamy, don’t-tell-the-kids hotness from Ellora’s Cave, Brava, and wherever else.  A new biography of…someone?  Something else non-fiction I was vaguely considering the other day and now can’t recall.  And oh dear heaven, could I subscribe to the NYT via e-reader too?

I think my eyes may need to buckle in for the ride.
Does pretty please with whipped cream and a cherry count?

  39. Monika H. says:

I’d probably buy Blameless by Gail Carriger.

  40. Linda Henderson says:

The first book I’d download would be a contemporary romance, probably something by Carly Phillips or Susan Mallery.
