Sony Reader: Eat, Read, Sleep

imageSony contacted me about doing a giveaway in celebration of the premiere of Eat Pray Love, which hits theatres this week. A Sony Pocket! In sexy silver! With a leather case (that is really a beautiful shade of blue on the outside) and two download codes for both of Elizabeth Gilbert’s books! Woo hoo for digital reading devices!

imageI know many of you are paper reading fanatics – which is absolutely awesome with sauce – but if you’re curious about trying digital reading but haven’t gathered all your pennies into one place to buy one, here’s a chance to win one, AND get a beautiful leather cover (can you tell I really like that blue?) with two free books.

All you have to do is leave a comment here and tell me, if you won, which book would be the first book you’d put on your Sony Reader, aside from the two free downloads? A romance? A mystery? A book on how to make your own leather Sony Reader cover with skulls and crossbones? I’ll pick one at random and announce the winner on Friday 20 August (Good Lord willing, creeks don’t rise, etc). You’ve got 48 hours to tell me which book gets to be “FIRST!” in your Reader.

Disclaimer: I’m not being compensated for this giveaway. I don’t even get the pretty blue leather cover, much as I love that color like whoa and nelly. Tie your shoes. Machine wash cold, lay flat to dry. Do not dry clean. Not available at salons. Digital ink on 100% post-consumer bytes. Melts in your mouth, not in your hand.  Not recommended for children. Prerecorded for this time zone. This broadcast has been reformatted to fit your screen. No solicitors. You can learn more about the bundle at the Sony Style store, and you can really really like Sony Readers on Facebook.

    First book? Pride and Prejudice.

Second? A Strong and Sudden Thaw

Third? North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell.

  2. Scorpio M. says:

My first will be the Rough Riders series by Lorelie James. I know that’s more than one but I love those McKays!

  3. Sarah Ferraro says:

It would be a tough choice, but I think I would choose to get Dune by Frank Herbert.  That book really had a profound impact on me personally.  The whole series did.  Really great insight into humanity, interesting and exciting scifi, and some pretty hot sex.

  4. Vixenbib says:

Any Laura Kinsale book I haven’t yet read – I think I’m about halfway through now. I think she’s fab. Thanks SBs.

  5. Mariska says:

My first book will be The body Finder by Kimberly dErting, coz i need to read this so bad !!

  6. Hannah says:

The first book I would put on the ereader is Shades of Grey by Jasper Fforde because he’s my favorite author and I need to read this book 5 or 6 more times before I really understand it.

  7. MelissaG says:

It’s hard to pick just one since I love so many series and would wan them all in ebook form but I think I would go with a mystery (with strong romantic elements) in Crocodile on the Sandbank by Elizabeth Peters.

  8. Grace Heffernan says:

I’d get the past few Sherrilyn Kenyon’s, since I haven’t read the past couple.

  9. Grace Heffernan says:

I’d get the past few Sherrilyn Kenyon’s, since I haven’t read the past couple.

  10. JoliC says:

Gee, I’d download anything and everything by Loretta Chase, Jennifer Crusie, Madeline Hunter, Sara Donati, and Patricia Gaffney (thanks, Candy).

    And of course, Jane Austen.

    Thanks, SBs.  You ladies rock.

  11. Vixenbib says:

At the risk of repeating myself (scrolling down the entries for this competition, I can’t seem to find the one I made a few minutes ago…?), I would like all the Laura Kinsale books I haven’t yet tracked down.  And thanks for the introduction.

  12. Vixenbib says:

Doh! Just realised that there are already two pages of entries and mine are on the SECOND page!

  13. Kelley says:

I’m actually thinking of all the professional books I could download for free from my district professional reading library.
Help a brand new principal out.  Think of the children!

  14. I would buy Lover Mine b/c I’m on a serious money diet and I’m not buying any new books, in paper or in pixels, and I am having to limit myself only to what I find at the library or paperback swap – IOW, nothing new.

And my Sony reader is very old, first gen, and I need one. I don’t just want it, I NEED it.

    Thank you. Thankyouverymuch.

  15. Tracy says:

The first book I’d buy is Reckless by Anne Stuart.

  16. Christine R says:

The first book would either be Waking the Witch by Kelley Armstrong or the new Miles Vorkosigan book Cryoburn by Lois McMaster Bujold mostly of course I’d be rubbing my hands and Cryoburn cackling madly

  17. Jenn says:

Oh, it would have to “Mockingjay” (are my YA freak flag colour flying yet?), simply because I’m dying for the final instalment. Go Katniss!  Following that though would have to be Lord Of Scoundrels because it’s an all-time favourite … one I can return to time and time again.

  18. Rory says:

New Book – Kresley Coles – Demon from the Dark (August 24th can’t get here soon enough for me)

Book I already own – Lorelei James – Rough Raw and Ready (Fave of the RR series)

  19. Michelle says:

Oh my! That is a tough question! Thats like asking who do I love more? Although, first, I would probably download all the books from my computer! Then spend days re-reading all my faves!!!

  20. Sasha says:

Karen Marie Moning, definitely. For Shadowfever. I was on pins and needles with her last book, she has to give me some closure, demmet! And I really really really need to see Barrons again. We have some issues unresolved, him and I.

  21. Katherine says:

One Foot in the grave by Jeaniene Frost.
I stumbled upon this one – prob a SB reccomendation and love the series. But the first is the best. Seriously good vampire (and other creatures) fiction that made the genre fresh for me as well as laugh out loud funny.

  22. lunarocket says:

I’m still pretty new to the romance genre but as I’m just about to start my 3rd Eve and Roarke book and as there are so many of them, I think having them all in an electronic reader would be cool. (Assuming they are available that way?) Then my only problem would be getting to a high speed internet site to download them. Thank goodness my library 8 miles away has one.

HEY!! Maybe if I let DH download a book now and then, it would finally convince him to dump our dial-up and get one of those satellite internet services……

  23. Jocelyn R. says:

What book would I put on the Sony Reader first? Either Heartmate by Robin D. Owens or Close Encounters by Katherine Allred. 🙂

  24. Erin T. says:

I just read Suzanne Brockmann’s “All Through the Night” from the library, and if I won the Sony reader, I’d put it right back on there, even though I don’t usually read books more than once.  But this time, I’d like to actually buy the book.

This is Jules’ and Robin’s wedding book, and I was just incredibly moved by the author’s note at the end.  Ms. Brockmann is donating all the profits from this book, for all time, to an organization which preserves and supports the rights of gay marriage.  I live in a state where gay marriage has been legalized, then repealed, and is now coming back up on the ballot soon.

I want to give great big kudos (and my hard-earned pennies) to Ms. Brockman for writing such diverse and nuanced characters, for introducing gay characters to the modern romance landscape as heroes in their own right, and for putting her own money where her mouth is.

(And even if I don’t win the reader, I’m going to buy the book, and donate matching funds to the appropriate organization in my state – even if it’s not much, I too can put my money where my mouth is!)

  25. peggy h says:

As unoriginal as this sounds, my first book on the reader will probably be Jennifer Crusie’s Maybe This Time.

  26. Mel says:

I’d buy Sunshine by Robin McKinley as it’s my fave and even though I have two paper copies, my e-reader would be incomplete without it!

  27. Amy S. says:

Beyond Heaving Bosoms, of course!  🙂
And to that shameless (but true) suck-up answer, I also have to add a shameless (but true) comment that Sony e-readers really do RAWK!!! I have a VERY well-used one (now held together with scotch tape – really) which I have used devotedly since Dec. 2007 years now (I’ve read almost 900 books on it in the past 2 and a half years!!!) Whomever wins the new Sony Reader will be a very, very lucky girl.

  28. AndreaZ says:

Dang!  I knew I loved this site, but it was delightful to see just how many others’ picks were books I absolutely adore and am so glad to see others reading (Bujold fans galore, but also Megan Whalen Turner!  Juliet Marillier!  Sara Creasy!!!)

As for my first book to download, it would be To the Hilt by Dick Francis, I think… I’ve discovered that his mysteries are the perfect length for longer flights and they hold up surprisingly well in re-reads.

  29. miz_geek says:

It would have to be Loretta Chase’s Last Night’s Scandal.  Or Jennifer Crusie’s new one.  Or my husband’s book, which is a pretty dry academic history book, but still, it’s his 🙂

  30. terhare says:

Oh, it would have to be the latest Loretta Chase baby!

  31. DSKY says:

Drink, Play, F@#K: One Man’s Search For Anything Across Ireland, Las Vegas, And Thailand

The male take on Eat Pray Love, which I’ve read.

  32. oooh, PRETTY!

The first book I’d put in is Sorceress of Karres. (sf&f)

  33. Sue C. says:

Oh, that is soooo easy.  The new Loretta Chase, Last Night’s Scandal.  And after that, the new Crusie.  I’m so ridiculously excited about both, I’d probably buy the paperbacks just to be safe, anyway.

  34. Ella D. says:

I am America (and so can You!) 😀

  35. Tabs says:

My first book would be “Emma” because I finally got around to reading it and just had to give up on my print copy because the yellow pages and fading print where straining my eyes to unreasonable degrees.

My second would be Loretta Chase’s new book.

  36. MJ says:

I pray on the reading stars I win this!
It’s hard to pick only one book to download. I know that if I won the reader I would download immediately all of Jane Austen‘s work, Christine Feehan‘s Dark Series or The Immortal life of Henrietta Lacks . Oh and I’ve also been wanting for a long time to read Madame Bovary in French.
So, since Jane Austen is first on my list the first book I would download would probably be a toss between Pride and Prejudice or Persuasion.
Thanks for the giveaway! and I really hope I win 🙂

  37. AB says:

My first book? Lords and Ladies by Terry Pratchett.

Then I’d probably buy all of the discworld books in ebook format.

  38. Kaetrin says:

Maybe This Time by Jenny Crusie – but if I couldn’t get that, then I’d like to try the new Nancy Gideon series with CeeCee and Max the shapeshifter.

  39. Paula N says:

Easy peasy: The Spellmans Strike Again by Lisa Lutz.  Best mystery series!  It’s quick paced, intriguing, hilarious and features the most dysfunctionally loving family there is.  Awesome read.

  40. First?  That’s tough.  There are sooo many good books out there right now that I want to read.  I have so many wishlisted on Amazon.

    Angelology.  It looks pretty cool.
