HaBO: It’s Romance, or It’s Insurance Fraud

Reader Amanda writes in with this

piece of insurance fraud

romance plotline:

I am looking for the title of the first romance novel I ever read. It was
back in the early or mid 90’s. The man was a cop I believe and the woman
was filling in as a temporary housekeeper as a favor for a family member.
The man hurt his back moving a refrigerator but pretended to be hurt longer
than he really was so the woman would stay and care for him. There was a box
of condoms given to the man by his buddies as a gag gift.

The woman and man were in bed and the man jumped out of bed to get the condoms and she then
found out he had been faking his injury. Hope someone can help me, this has
been driving me crazy for weeks and I can’t find my answer on the internet.

I’m totally amused by this one – fake a back injury and get the girl! And some Aflac while you’re at it!

OMG, I read this one. I can’t remember it, sorry, but you’re not alone.

  2. Kara says:

Love Overboard (aka Ivan Takes A Wife when it was originally released) by Janet Evanovich. Except it’s on a boat, and the cook used to be a cop…. Sorry, that’s what I could come up with.

I have no idea which book this might be, but I almost wet myself with the thought of insurance fraud as a plot device.  I’m having a suckish of epic proportions in my synopsis class, so the giddiness can be explained.  But not necessarily sympathized with.  Sorry, what were we talking about????

Oh!  Wish I knew this book because it sounds like a good, pick me up kind of read.

it sounds like the plot of “The man who came to dinner”

I feel like I read this. I was looking at the old Avon Romance covers but I can’t find a big enough list of their authors for the early 90’s.

But this feels like the cover had a semi-cartoon like they were doing at the time.

    Hmmm.
