As Jane mentioned on Dear Author, DA, SB moi, and the Dr. toting masterminds at Teach me Tonight will be reviewing Virgin Slave, Barbarian King by Louise Allen. In the wake of the romance = the-patriarchy-is-keeping-me-down (and also hid my bag of chips) in the Guardian last week, it seemed like the only fun and spanky thing to do. Dr. Frantz gets mad props for the idea.
Well, I’ll be reviewing, and Jane will be reviewing. The Drs. of Luuuuurve® will be nitpicking the shit out of the book, and spoiling it every which way until it begs for more, please, sir and ma’ams, but either way – it’s going to be loads of fun.
I’ve already informed the lot of them that from now on, I wish to be known as the Barbarian Virgin.

I want Secret Barbarian Baby Virgin!
Did anybody catch this really whack article yet?

Teddy Pig,
Thanks for the link! I’m in the middle of a term paper about how Western women view the veil, and this is a goldmine. I appreciate it!
You are welcome. I am still trying to figure the POV of the writer. For some reason I find it confusing.
Why does Western always equal the US? How about we include England, Ireland, Scotland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Austria, Germany, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Greece, et and so forth…plus Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Japan, Russia, et and so forth? Seriously, it just makes me itch the way the US gets smacked around, when “Western” culture is a conglomeration of thousands upon thousands of years of philosophical and intellectual thought; which is shared by more than just us, here in the USA.
*sigh* my soapbox just upended me.
Well (she said modestly), Eric thought up the idea to begin with. I had the brilliant notion of inviting you and the Ja(y)nes. 😉
Sarah, you’re too kind! (Sarah the Dr. of Lurve, not Sarah the Barbarian Virgin, which is to the Scribe Virgin what Faith is to Buffy, right?) Inviting the Ja(y)nes and SB Sarah makes this a party, not just a seminar. Thine is the power & the glory, as they say. (We’ll see about that kingdom when we’re done with the book!)
SB Sarah, if you like the Adam Sandler preview, check out the Israeli “HDTV on YES” ad over at my Big Jewish Blog (http://abigjewishblog.blogspot.com). It’s not the Hoff, but it’s a hoot.
(sigh) The moment I saw “National Post” in that article, Teddy Pig, I knew it was going to come down on the side of “us Westerners are better and smarter than anyone, especially anyone who is Muslim”. It’s the freaking National Post, the newspaper that would consider Genghis Khan a dangerous communist. They *HATE* Islam and every single thing to do with it, and will twist the facts to suit their hatred. They also hate every political party except the Conservatives (and then only the neo-con right wing of it), feminism, self-determination by anyone except for rich white men, the young, and anything that doesn’t kiss the ass of the oil companies (ie. environmentalism). And they never, ever let the facts get in the way of a good story tearing down anything they don’t support.
I’ve got to the point that if the National Post claimed the sun rose in the east, I’d look for independent verification. They are THAT unreliable.
That poor girl was strangled because her father was an abusive, violent bastard, not because of Islam.
OMG!
Dear Ms. Allen
Bad reviews or good, you’ve just hit a sales bump!
SB Sarah: techinically I believe that your nursery is a little overcrowded for that particular title – but hey, whatever floats your boat!
I’ve just spent the last hour or so following all the links to the original article and in the comments of Ms. Allen’s rebuttal I found this link:

Thought the Bitchery would appreciate it.
