Informal Potter Poll

How late will you/did you stay up reading HP7: The UPS Man Hates Him Like Damn?.

I’m betting Hubby will be up until about 2am, eastern. What about you? Your family? Will everyone be up late reading?

  1. My niece is visiting this week, and we were just discussing this morning what we thought would be the minimum length of time a person needed to read HP7. I think 6 hours is miraculously fast.

My niece stayed in bed for 24 h last time to read HP6, but decided it was too fast, and so with this book she is taking her time and savoring the experience. I guess since it is the last one. I thought this was wise. She is a little more than half way and telling me the plot as she goes. Very fun.

  2. --E says:

I read from 2pm until about 10:30pm, which got me to around page 500 or so, and a nice spot to pause.

Then around 11:30, I was heading off to bed and said, ““Eh, just read a little more.” BIG MISTAKE, because of course that’s when it takes off like a rocket and doesn’t let up. I stayed up until 5:15 in the morning finishing it.

But I was completely unspoilered! And I was smugly satisfied that every prediction I made regarding the outcomes was correct. Score!

  3. Diane says:

I bet we can beat Harry for who the UPS Man hates most.

I work at a summer camp and half the kids (about 200) ship their luggage to us by UPS. Every day about six 90-pound bags come off his truck. He has to lug them up steps and squeeze them through a skinny door if the weather’s bad.

    Take that, Potter.

  4. Serena says:

I got it about 3pm on Saturday, and finished it at 11pm… There were some put-down points, where I had to just walk away.  Haven’t started it again, but figure I will.  I’m trying to decide I want to start with book one, and read all the way through, or start wtih book one and skip book 5,(which I hated!), or just read book 7.

  5. lauren says:

I was staffing at Otakon since Thurs (con ended yesterday) so I bought the book before reporting to the BCC and it took me FAR longer than normal ( a day and a half wtf!) to finish.
2:15 am this morning I was done.

  6. Baileykat says:

Bought it for my daughter at our local grocery store. Did the midnight run. She finished it at six-thirty in the morning.

I didn’t start until four-thirty that evening, when I could read until I finished it. Well, that didn’t include cooking dinner, a quick shower or my other up and downs. I read slow on purpose because it was the last and I wanted to savor it.

Finished at three. Nine and a half actual hours of reading time, and I didn’t feel rushed. What a trip!

  7. Melissa says:

I stayed up until 6 a.m. not able to put the book down.

  8. Elle says:

I started last night after dinner, read until about 4 AM (“just a few more pages…”) and then finished it off this morning.  I wanted to read it before I heard any spoilers about the ending.  My 9 year old daughter is reading it now (I think that she peeked at the end though.)  My son should have had his copy delivered to him at camp.  My husband just goes to the movies.

  9. Jepad says:

I got the book on Saturday night, but didn’t start reading it until Sunday.  Talk about the self-control.  Finished it by 11:30 on Sunday.

I was visiting my brother on Sunday.  He, his wife, and I all sat outside reading the Deathly Hallows.  Actually she’d already finished and was re-reading over my brother’s shoulder. Someone should’ve taken pictures.

  10. God-Child on summer visit is MIA with Potter, except to emerge occasionally to give a blow-by-blow and eat some salami. Who needs to read? Ah, the sacrifices made.

  11. Nora Roberts says:

I’m at a spa resort with the family. Spent some time by the pool today, and saw several people—all ages—reading the new HP. But this evening, when we were down in the ice cream parlor I saw a boy—about 15—standing in line for ice cream, reading the latest Harry Potter. A teenage boy reading while waiting to order ice cream.

When my daughter-in-law asked him about it, the light on his face had nothing to do with the cone he was about to order, and everything to do with the book. That’s both amazing and wonderful to me.

If I ruled the world, Rowling would have a medal, and perhaps be cannonized.

  12. ChrissyLou says:

We received our copy on Saturday, but I didn’t get to start until Sunday afternoon. I have five kids (ages 3-16), so there were many interruptions prior to bedtime. I finished at about 3:45am on Monday. Whew!  My 16yos is showing remarkable restraint. He decided to re-read all 6 previous books before allowing himself the treat of the last. He started this project on Saturday morning and is most of the way through book 4 as I write. Go Bobby!

  13. I think “Dame J.K. Rowling” has a nice ring to it.  “Baroness Rowling” would also work.  Those Brits—so many lovely options![g]

  14. azteclady says:

My brother called me just a bit ago, to ask me whether the kidlet and I had read it… and then yell, “don’t spoil me! I still have the last four books to read!”

    I’m still chuckling…

  15. Sam says:

I read it in eight hours. Booyah.

  16. megalith says:

    Late to this party…

My library called me at 9 a.m. on Saturday to tell me the copy I’d reserved was available for pickup, so they obviously got the books well ahead of time.

I couldn’t start reading it until Monday night and stayed up last night to finish it at 6:30 this morning. Wow, some of you guys are fast readers! It took me about 12 hours to read this one. I really need to go back and re-read the entire series at some point, because I was having trouble remembering events from book 6 while reading this book.

Wondering what Phillip Pullman has to do with Severus Snape. Isn’t Alan Rickman still playing the part in the movies? BTW, did anyone else wonder if the actors are reading this book and wondering how they’ll play various scenes?

  17. megalith says:

Oh, Lord. Laughing at myself with the Phillip Pullman comment. Had to Google him to find out exactly how brightly my ignorance shone.

There really needs to be an edit function in life and on blogs, because not only do I have severe foot-in-mouth disease, but I have a seriously sarcastic sense of humor.

    Sigh.

  18. if you’ve read the book already…my neice did some cute cartoons about it.
