Informal Potter Poll

How late will you/did you stay up reading HP7: The UPS Man Hates Him Like Damn?.

I’m betting Hubby will be up until about 2am, eastern. What about you? Your family? Will everyone be up late reading?

Kidlet is engrossed as we speak. All I’ve heard since the mail got here are the occasional cackle (i.e., “I was right!!!”) and moan (“oh this is saaaaaaaaaad!”) I’m refusing to listen—I will read it myself at some point, if only to know what happens.

  2. Rosie says:

My oldest son is reading right now too.  He’s determined to read until finished.  He’ll probably make it to about 1 AM PST and be about 2/3rds through.  He’ll definitely finish tomorrow.

My husband has announced he is reading it next.  He’s got his evenings planned for the next week so he can read and finish the book in a week.

Never before has such planning gone into the reading of a single book…not in my household.

  3. kate r says:

    I’m done. I read fast.

  4. Vaughan Williams says:

I lasted until 5.30am, then woke up at noon and read until around 8pm. I usually go faster than that, but I didn’t want to miss any details—JKR loves sprinkling in little things that you think aren’t necessary but end up being of huge importance.

  5. Teddypig says:

    Read the epilogue first

    No harsh surprises

    Now ready to start tonight.

  6. Charlene says:

You mean HP7: Although Amazon.ca Said It Would Be Hard To Find Locally And Would Cost $40, My Local Safeway Has Piles Of Them Today For $26.99?

  7. SarahLynn says:

I did the same thing as Vaughan Williams except that I finished around 6pm.

  8. CM says:

Finished at 4:30 AM on the 21st.

  9. monimala says:

I had to recover from the midnight release first, so I finished a little before 2 PM today, after approximately five hours of reading!

Still haven’t recovered.  My eyeballs hurt.

Apparently the spam filter thinks the cure for this is “really69.”

  10. double h says:

My daughter finished at about 2pm today – stayed up all night.  Husband started right away, stopped long enough to take his wife to a movie (gasp) and is back at it.  I’m guessing he’ll take until Monday.

I’ll read it when I get around to it.  More of a movie fan for this series.

  11. Lisa says:

Me? I haven’t even read book 1, much less book 7. However, the husband went to B&N this morning at 9 a.m., got home at 9:30, and finished at 4:00 p.m.. Then, at my insistence, proceeded to give me a synopsis. With spoilers.

Husband is also a fast reader. The only reason it took him until 4 p.m. was because I insisted he stop to take over baby duties for half an hour.

  12. KarenF says:

Finished at about 6:30 a.m.  I really didn’t INTEND to stay up all night reading.  It was more one of those, “just one more chapter, then I’ll turn out the lights” kind of things, until I hit 4:30 am and realized I only had a couple hundred more pages to go.

  13. Lisa, LOL!  I thought I was the only one who hadn’t read even one of the books!!  And, yes, my husband has also done a quick scanning read and spoiled everything for me.  Now he’ll read it more slowly.

  14. michele says:

I wanted to savor it – which is why I lasted until 10:41 tonight to finish it.  And I’m speechless – just, amazing.

  15. Walt says:

Went to the HP release party, took pictures of all the bad girls who want to be in Slytherin house.  Didn’t buy the book because I didn’t reserve a copy.  I did already read most of the book before the release … uh, I shouldn’t have said that…

But wife purchased it on Amazon and I’ll be getting it in the flesh on Tuesday.

  16. Robin says:

Am I the only one in America and the UK who hasn’t read a HP book?

Goddamn I’m going to be happy when the Bar exam is over and I can leave the house for something other than more coffee and calories.

  17. Liz C says:

I finished at 1am Saturday morning. Because I’m just that awesome. And because I definitely was one of the people to get their copy from Deep Discount 3 days early. God bless their little soon to be sued souls.

But, um, don’t tell Scholastic that I read it before midnight Saturday as I totally told them I wouldn’t in exchange for some loot. But when it comes to a series such as Harry Potter I have no principles. Or patience.

  18. veinglory says:

No you aren’t, Robin. 😉  Utter disinterest here. Even JK can only please some of the people some of the time.

  19. Elyssa says:

Finished it just now and loved every single minute of it.

  20. meghan1943 says:

I did the whole midnight release thing and, even with that, I did not get my greedy little hands on the book until 1:30am. I stayed up until 3:30am and then forced myself to sleep until 10:00am. I finished the book at 8:31pm.

I only needed one tissue…. and, even then, I only really cried at one part.

  21. SandyW says:

I just finished. Went to the midnight release last night. There was a lady dressed as Delores Umbridge at the bookstore. Pink hat, tailored pink dress, little cat pins. Truly creepy.

I came home and didn’t actually start reading till late this morning, so I would be rested and uninterrupted. I have to confess I went through loads of tissues near the end. The extended explanatory flashbacks, for those who are already done. What can I say? I am terribly susceptible to a good tragedy.

  22. Dr. Strangelove says:

Didn’t expect to get it today seeing as how I pre-ordered with free shipping for $17 months ago.  A nice break though and I finished it, with baking some cookies, in about twelve hours.  Had to find out about my favorite character: Severus.  And if people are inclined to jump all over that I’d just like to say that I think he’s one of the only complicated characters JKR really made.  But then I have a Phillip Pullman crush.  When I’m not reading romance of course 😉

  23. Mitzi Flyte says:

Reading now – while typing – and it’s 1:30 AM DST in the east…
    Getting too old for this.

  24. rooruu says:

It was released at a civilised 9.01am Saturday here in Oz.  I collected it mid-morning but couldn’t sit down with it till around 7pm.  The temptation to flip to the back first was immense…but I resisted.  Finished by about 11pm.

Love the way the HP books get people talking about *books* and what you can find in reading that is not the same as film or anything else.  On the one hand, the intimacy of the book and yourself.  On the other, the community of readers.

Which is what SBTB is about, isn’t it?

  25. Caro says:

Finished at just past 8 PM PST.  Took me about nine hours, including the break for lunch and the nap in the middle of it.

Yes, I waiting in line last night.  Read the first chapter then went to bed, picked up reading this morning.

  26. ardith says:

I got it at a midnight party. Arrived at my best friend’s house at about 12:45. Finished reading at 5:21am.

    Still trying to recover sleep.

  27. Deb says:

Wandered out to buy it at 1:30 this afternoon.  Finished it at 11:00 tonight and turned it over to hubby.

  28. Claudia says:

I’ve got so much work to do that I need more than a day to finish. I got DH from my po box until late this afternoon but only started it around an hour ago. I’m on page 121 and am reading slow to make sure I catch and remember small details. I’ll probably end up getting the cd instead or rereading.

It’s only midnight here, so I’ll probably read for a couple hours more. If DH were a paperback I could lie comfortably with it and read all night 🙂

My biggest shock so far was the lack of plot info on the jacket. It gave me chuckle since the NYTimes editor has defended NYT’s early, spoilered review by saying it didn’t reveal anything more than jacket copy would =)

  29. Charity Mullen says:

I bought the book at around 5:30pm.  Started reading it at about 6:30pm.  I just finished it at 1:19am.

Good book.  My friend and I were reading it in tandem.  Every now and then we would call each other to give opinions on what part of the story we were reading.

  30. Dr. Strangelove, I’ve thought all along that the series is as much about Snape as it is about Harry; his story is just as important.

Read it in about 5 hours total reading time.

  31. Marianne McA says:

Kept saying to the children yesterday – it’s not a race, and when you finish, it’s over, so take your time.

Nonetheless they both finished within ten minutes of each other, just before nine, and I finished about tea-time.
Now I get to read it aloud to my youngest who is very dyslexic. With Book 6 that took about six weeks – so we’ll still be avoiding spoilers for her for some time.

  32. Mitzi Flyte says:

Read until 10 (was out doing errands) – I got up around 12MN – read until 1:30 – back to bed – up at 5 – still reading – I love, love, love being engrossed in a book.

  33. Jo says:

Bought a copy each for my daughter and myself, I got to the local Tesco’s at 12.10am and had missed any queues. Kidlit and I both read for an hour or so before bed, I finished it at 2.29 in the afternoon and it took the kid until 9.30pm with breaks for the all important MSN conversations. I really liked it and only cried at one part the teenager cried buckets at several places – obviously a more sensitive soul.
The hubby is away for the weekend but intends to read it. It’s going to be annoying to remember not to discuss things in front of him because he’s a really slow reader and the last HP book took him about 3 weeks to finish and that was when he was taking the bus to work and read throughout his journey. He drives to work now and it could take him months to finish HP7!

  34. We’ll read the book slowly. None of us will be the first to finish it. We’ll probably spend the next month reading the chapters each night before bed to the kids and I’ll make sure I stay caught up in the morning by reading a chapter a head.

  35. Kris Eton says:

Have to read the “Half-Blood Prince” before I can even think about this one. I know, I know, I’m seriously behind.

  36. MamaNice says:

The husband and I stayed up til about 1 am drinking wine and listening to it on audio (we really enjoy Jim Dale’s reading) we’ve done this with all the HP books. We’ll only listen to it after the little one is in bed (she picks up on way too much and gets scared) so it will probably take us all week to finish. I have waited to buy the books until the series was finished – so Santa better bring my complete box set for Christmas!

  37. Melissa says:

Hubby bought our copy at yesterday, while I got my car fixed, gassed it up, grocery shopped and brought a late lunch home.  As my reward I got to read it first. 🙂

Started reading around 3:30 EST, finished just after 11 EST.  That includes a break for dinner, a shower break, and a couple of quick stretching breaks.

Hubby woke up early this morning, and started reading.  He’s on page 417 right now.  🙂

  38. Kerry Allen says:

    Bastards failed to deliver.

Commenting from jail, because someone had to die.

  39. azteclady says:

Kidlet finished in under twelve hours—with pauses for dinner, bathroom, and being gracious to her visiting cousins.

  40. JulieT says:

I picked it up Saturday morning around ten AM and finished around ten-thirty PM Saturday night, with occasional breaks to care for my child, fix meals, and act like a grownup. (I hate that.) Finished the tale with a migraine (not sure if it was the uninterrupted reading or the body count), and was THEN up until four in the morning from that.
