Some food for thought in this comic regarding achieving brilliance because of, and through, a medium of art’s limitations.
Not sure how much good quoting Cat and Girl would do the next time somebody snarks and snarls about the romance formula, but there you go.

Ooooooooooo, saved that one to use as a screen saver when I’m feeling annoyed!
Like, oh, last week when a guy I’ve known for years and had considered a friend overheard me telling someone else about my novel and butted in with “I really should be writing, I could use the easy money.”
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
Then he said, “Why are you so mad? It’s just a romance novel after all.”
Double grrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
I told him that when he FINISHES his novel, lands a top agent, and sells to a major NY house he’s welcome to take me out to dinner and tell me all about how “easy” the money was.
That is…perfect.

Stephen King noted that as one of his worst peeves. Paraphrasing, he mentions having doctors and such remarking how they’d love to write a book once they had some spare time. He remarks back, that’s great, that he really would like to try brain surgery in his spare time.
A certain faction will always view writing, particularly romance, as something anyone can do. On one level they’re right: Anyone CAN do it…just very few can do it well.
That’s why there are slushpiles. Big ones.
Loved this. Sums up alot of things doesn’t it?
I’m still waiting for that easy money to show up.
But in the meantime, I’ll keep writing.
But, hey, writing isn’t a REAL job, doncha know. There’s no REAL work involved.
At least that’s what I’ve been led to believe by everyone around me….
Welcome to my world. Ebook publishing is joining writing as an ‘anyone can do it’ job.
Which is untrue. It’s not just a matter of putting books on a website—it’s marketing, financial accounting, copyright law and management, and that’s not even factoring in the editing and art direction. Hours of hours of hard work. Taking responsibility for other people’s writing and how it’s presented to the world, which can affect their career.
But hey, it’s only ebooks, right? Not like you have to know anything about publishing to sell those.
Pardon the rant. I have to learn to not read some forums…they make me cranky.
Mistress Stef, you are my queen today.
*GRIN*
I can’t write…love those of you who can! My hairdresser & I have an agreement…he doesn’t sew, and I don’t attmept to cut my own hair (ever again).
