Enchanted Warrior by Sharon Ashwood

Enchanted Warrior

I was excited at the thought of snagging a book for the Smart Bitches Trashy Books RITA Reader Challenge. SBTB is the first book blog I read, and a great example of what I want our blog to be when it grows up. I carefully went over the list (well, what was left of the list, it was kind of slim pickings by the time I looked) and Enchanted Warrior stood out. The King Arthur … Continue reading Enchanted Warrior by Sharon Ashwood

Enchanted Warrior by Sharon Ashwood

Enchanted Warrior

This book reads like the R-rated cousin of a BBC Merlin episode. Some cheesy writing and slightly rushed plot points: check. Knights of the Round Table making questionable decisions: check. A badass sorcerer who takes no shit and saves literally everyone, all the time: check and mate. As a huge Merlin fan, overall, I enjoyed myself. The reasons why: Tamsin Greene, healer, witch, and historian extraordinaire. Tamsin is following in her missing they-never-found-the-body dead father’s … Continue reading Enchanted Warrior by Sharon Ashwood

Bayou Shadow Hunter by Debbie Herbert

Bayou Shadow Hunter

I haven’t read a paranormal romance in a long-ass time. I binged and then got sick of vampires and werewolves. However, whilst scrolling through the open options on the RITA spreadsheet, I came across a book called Bayou Shadow Hunter. Damn if that shit didn’t sound either fucking awesome or batshit crazy. Since it is a paranormal without bizarre creatures, I decided to give it a shot, and I ended up enjoying myself quite a … Continue reading Bayou Shadow Hunter by Debbie Herbert

Bayou Shadow Hunter by Debbie Herbert

Bayou Shadow Hunter

I was really hoping to like this book. I wanted to write a review that was filled with lots of squee and happy rainbow unicorn gifs because that would have been fun to write. In retrospect, I was being overly optimistic since I am not typically a paranormal romance reader and rarely feel such adoration for the subgenre. This book did not leave me with warm and fuzzy feelings after the HEA. I found the … Continue reading Bayou Shadow Hunter by Debbie Herbert

The Pages of the Mind by Jeffe Kennedy

The Pages of the Mind

I’m a sucker for word nerd characters in my reading. Devotees of books, language, writing, libraries—bring ‘em on. And when a novel is as well written as The Pages of the Mind, it’s time to bring on the squee as well. Hence my whole-hearted enjoyment of The Pages of the Mind comes as no surprise, nor does my affection for the character of Dafne. Dafne is librarian, scribe, historian, and advisor to Ursula, the recently crowned … Continue reading The Pages of the Mind by Jeffe Kennedy

The Pages of the Mind by Jeffe Kennedy

The Pages of the Mind

This year, when selecting my choices to review for the RITA Reader Challenge, I made sure to choose books I actually own. I got this in one of many e-book sales, intrigued by the notion of a fantasy romance with a librarian heroine, not exactly something you see that often. It turns out that Dafne, as well as being a devoted librarian and archivist, is a scholar and a linguist who delights in learning new … Continue reading The Pages of the Mind by Jeffe Kennedy

The Leopard King by Ann Aguirre

The Leopard King

So, while I’d like to start this review off by describing why I loved this book – and I did love this book – I instead feel the need to begin with a content warning for self harm and some suicidal ideation. There’s no indication of this in the book’s description and the first mention happens only a few pages in. I found it abrupt, but it wasn’t so unsettling that it turned my opinion … Continue reading The Leopard King by Ann Aguirre

The Leopard King by Ann Aguirre

The Leopard King

So there was this time back in the day when I decided to get married, which was, in retrospect, pretty obviously a terrible idea. Not as terrible as the Japanese kanji tattoo my brother got when he was seventeen (note: we are not Japanese; further note: we do not speak Japanese; final note: he claimed it meant “lost soul,” riiiiiiight), but solidly worse than That Time I Did That Thing To My Hair, as well … Continue reading The Leopard King by Ann Aguirre

Ghost Gifts by Laura Spinella

Ghost Gifts

I really wanted to have a great review for you all. I bought Ghost Gifts by Laura Spinella on May 8th, right after signing up to review. 3,349 people thought it was pretty good – it has an average of 4.5 stars on Amazon. Give the book a try! Really, you probably will like it. I however, did not. I thought about admitting my failure to Amanda at Smart Bitches, Trashy Books. Telling her that … Continue reading Ghost Gifts by Laura Spinella

Where the Wild Things Bite by Molly Harper

Where the Wild Things Bite

Molly Harper’s Half Moon Hollow series is one of my favorite auto-buys. It is the stuff that comfort reads are made of, with a nice balance of humor and horror and an occasional insight into the ugly mechanics of prejudice. If the series has a flaw, it is that while the heroes, both fangy and furry, are good looking and good guys, they are sometimes less than fascinating. However, in the case of Where the … Continue reading Where the Wild Things Bite by Molly Harper
