The summary:

A single lady in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a suitor Margaret de Lacey has accepted her unmarried state with dignity, if not delight. She had no suitors when she was young and starry-eyed, though regrettably poor, and it’s unlikely any man will court her now that she’s older, wiser, and still just as penniless.

Until, that is, her brother unexpectedly inherits the dukedom of Durham and settles an enormous dowry on her, making her the most eligible heiress in town. No gentleman in London is more in need of a wealthy bride than Rhys Corwen, Earl of Dowling. He contrives an introduction to Margaret because of her dowry, but she swiftly sets him right: no fortune hunter will win her heart or her hand.

Far from put off, Rhys is intrigued. Interested. Entranced. And soon the only thing he needs more than Margaret’s fortune . . . is her love.

And here is Nat RR's review:

I Love The Earl by Caroline Linden had a rough and slow beginning, but it certainly won a special place on my bookshelf. This book is the prequel for The Truth About The Duke trilogy ( A | BN | K | S | ARe ).

The first few chapters were very descriptive, and I understand why the author decided to invest in such a long presentation, but since this story is in the form of a novella, I was expecting to see a more embracing introduction during the first part, and to get to know the hero as well.

The “seduction” was very entertaining and the main couple were amazing together! I loved the dialogue scenes between the two and the strong set of supporting characters. This story certainly has a great humor to it and I could picture the characters in my head as three dimensional, believable and with a lot of veracity – which means Caroline Linden has done a great job of characterization! However, I had some problems with the development when it came to the sex scene and to be convinced by the declarations of love that didn't sound so true at first.

After I closed the book, it left me wondering what will happen to the Duke, and what the author had planned next. It one of those stories that while you're expecting the next in the series it will be in your head and from time to time you'll find yourself creating plots and imagining a possible future for the characters! I was captivated!

I really enjoy Caroline Linden’s books.  I can’t articulate why she’s a B author for me, but yeah, it’s something to do with the pacing.  This one had great characters and an interesting set up, a fun plot and I never mind her style, but…yeah, sometimes it’s slow, and sometimes it’s rushed (and novellas are always too short).
