I love the beginning of this book. It snatches you up immediately with the thrilling scene of the heroine, Zoey, fighting for her life against a supernaturally strong wolf with only a windshield wiper as a weapon.   There are other scenes like this interspersed throughout the book; wonderfully eerie passages that allow you to forget about everything else going on in the real world until you neighbor’s cockapoodle gives a polite ‘arf’ and makes you jump out of your skin.

That’s a good thing, because the actual romance- a psychic and a changeling wolf falling in lusty mate-for-life-love- is not enough to hold up this book.

It’s not that you wouldn’t want to see characters like Zoey and changeling-wolf/hunky vet Connor fall in love.  Why wouldn’t you?  They are very nice. Oh lordy, are they ever nice.  Cartoon watching, puppy birthing, helping all our fellow man/wolf nice.  This is a couple that seems all but genetically engineered  to live a happy life free of woe or conflict.

In real life I’m all ‘yay’ for conflict free romance.  On page, it gets more than a little repetitive.  With the brief exception of Zoey and Connor’s initial, um, intimacy problems ‘oh this feels so right.  I will love her for- oh no! My wolf part!’ and the inevitable reveal ‘you’re a werewolf?  I can’t believe that!  I reject you!  I…hey now, half of the town is attesting to your good guy-ness and lycanthropy.  I’m all yours!’ little else went on in their story. 

I’m not proud of the fact that I started cheering the incredibly awful villain of the story on, but at least some bloodshed shook the lovers out of their blanket of happy if only for a little while.
