RITA Reader Challenge Review

One Night with Her Bachelor by Kat Latham

This RITA® Reader Challenge 2016 review was written by Library Addict. This story was nominated for the RITA® in the Short Contemporary Romance category.

The summary:

Bid on a date with this wounded warrior for an unforgettable night of adventure. Aim high—and bid higher!—because no one comes close to local hero Gabriel Morales.

Molly Dekker hates being the town charity case, but when her son Josh is seriously injured she has no choice. She lets her best friend organize a bachelor auction to help pay her massive bills and make Josh’s life more comfortable. She can’t bid on any of the men, but a surprise bidder gives her a gift she never expected: a date with the man who saved her son’s life—the only one she’s in danger of losing her heart to.

Former Air Force pararescueman Gabriel Morales made a career of flying to the rescue, until a tragic helicopter crash stole more than his livelihood. Being auctioned off like a slab of beef isn’t in his recovery plan. But one look, one touch and one night unlocking Molly’s pent-up passion make him realize how badly he needs to be rescued…and how badly he wants to rescue Molly right back.

Will Molly and Gabriel’s never-quit attitude have them rushing head-first into love? Or will Gabriel’s secret pain stall their relationship before it can get off the ground?

Here is Library Addict's review:

I bought this book on the release date in March 2015, but then put off reading it. Unsure why as I’ve really enjoyed all of the author’s earlier books. Perhaps it’s the fact that this book is the last of a multi-author series (Bachelor Auction) and I didn’t feel like reading all of the other authors’ contributions. Or the fact the book is also the first book in Latham’s Wild Montana Nights series and each book in her Wild Montana Nights series is a part of another, unconnected series. All of which confuzzles my brain to think about. But I purchased them all as they released last year and, as with many other series in my TBR, there the books sat.

Since I am a read-in-order type person, I gave myself permission to skip the other authors’ stories and put all 4 of the Wild Montana Nights books: One Night With Her Bachelor (Bachelor Auction #6), Taming the Legend (London Legends #4), Two Nights with His Bride (Montana Born Brides #6), and Three Nights Before Christmas (Montana Born Christmas) on my “Must Read in 2016” list. So when this book was nominated for a RITA, I knew I wanted to read it for the RITA Reader Challenge.

At the start, the kindergarten teacher heroine has a rare kid-free weekend from her energetic ten-year-old son. She plans to get lucky with the hero even though they don’t have any sort of relationship apart from the fact he was her older brother’s BFF. There’s a lot of info crammed into the first scene. Most was well-integrated into her internal monologue, but some came off as info-dumping. The hero is oblivious to the fact the heroine has always had a crush on him. He’s trying to adjust to civilian life by living off the grid in the woods after being injured and losing his job as a USAF Pararescuer.

The book starts with a lot of humor, some of which worked for me, some of which did not. The story soon takes a serious turn when the heroine’s son is severely injured. (This is in the back-cover blurb, so not a spoiler). I had some issues with the way the heroine’s son’s injuries were glossed over. Not brushed aside exactly, but not nearly as fully explored as they could have been. I realize he wasn’t the focus of the story, but this made him seem like an excuse for the heroine to act or react to various events rather than a three-dimensional character. The hero’s issue also seemed to exist solely to give him the excuse for some of his actions (being vague to avoid spoilers). But part of me feels with more page time these issues could have been elaborated on more successfully. Basically, there were just too many issues introduced to do them all justice with the limited word count. So the characters came off as clichéd at times rather than as people attempting to deal with their problems.

Still, the romance worked for me overall. The book didn’t work as well when dealing with the characters’ lives aside from their romantic relationship. Reading it I felt there was a deeper story underneath and I just wanted things to slow down so I could read that, but the fast pace of the book just skimmed the surface of things and hinted at events rather than exploring them. Plus there was more tell than show. A difficult book to grade as it was a mixed bag. But I’ll give it a B-.

Full disclosure with a bit of spoiler info:

Show Spoiler
I help care for a family member who is a recent amputee, so the way in which the wheelchair, ramp, home accessibility, and other related issues were handled stuck out for me more than they may for other readers. I tried not to spoil the fact the hero is an amputee as the reader does not learn that fact until late in the book. Hence the “other related issues” phrasing.

I read one of the other books in this series and then got so caught up in other bright shiny books, I forgot to check out the rest of the series. Thanks for the review and the reminder!
