Writing + Tan = Win!

by SB Sarah | October 31, 2007 | Wednesday at 1:00 am | 13 Comments

There are, if you hadn’t noticed, a LOT of RWA chapters. They’re everywhere. And they often host conferences, and those conferences frequently take advantage of local amenities to entice folks to come on down and learn about romance writing, the industry, you know, all that fun stuff. So - New York City? Allure of the big city and you know, that publishing industry thing everyone talks about. New Jersey? Hey. There’s PLENTY of ALLURE in JERSEY! (I kid - the Jersey conference is awesome.)

But by far the most creative chapter conference I’ve encountered? Florida Romance Writers’ Fun in the Sun Conference . Hey, if you’re based in Florida, why not? Three day cruise to the Bahamas? Agents, editors, writing sessions and a bar that’s open late at night? And not to mention the part where it’s warm? And in the sun? As a potential business expense?

Word. That’s a brilliant idea for a conference.

Dude. No fair. All we can offer in Chicago is our reputation for hard drinking.

Chicago? Chicago is awesome! There’s drinking, Cubs games from the bleacher seats, the Lakeshore bike path, and absolutely marvelous weather: it’s either so hot it will kill people, or so cold it will kill people, and about a week of spring or fall in between.

Hubby went to Northwestern, and he looooves Chicago. You know how it was founded, right? A bunch of people in New York said, “I’m really enjoying the crowds, the crime, and the pollution, but it’s just not cold enough. Let’s go to Chicago!”

I want to go. What a great idea!

Oh, and I love Chicago. It’s one of my favorite US cities to visit. And there’s nothing wrong with hard drinking ;)

DUDE.  I am so jealous!  My son’s birthday is January 30th so there’s no way I could go.  DAMMIT.  That idea kicks much ass!

Then I expect to see some Bitches at Spring Fling, the Chicago North conference in April. Most of the editors, agents, celeb writers etc who agreed to show up did so because they love to party. It’s built in to the program. 2pm-4pm workshops. 7pm-9pm dinner and keynote speech with Debbie Macomber. 9pm-4am drink, dance, puke, repeat. Good times…

You’ve got to love an organization with event coordination like that.

Oh my god. I wonder if they read that horrible book “Mai Tai to Murder” and thought this is an excellent idea!

Although, I would totally love to spend 3 days on a cruise about now…

Not to be a total downer, but pack your sunblock!  Fabulous networking is great, but a brutal tan/sunburn with the subsequent skin cancer is not so cool. :)

    Hey, Sarah,
So happy you like the idea…gosh, I might be packing a repair kit for the life boat if you didn’t. lol

Thanks for mentioning the FRW conference in your blog. The truth is, we wanted to brand ourselves as a ‘Florida’ chapter and the cruise seemed like the natural option. Not to mention that this time it worked out much less expensive than the traditional route.
Sanachan, we need to advertise early because Royal Caribbean will not hold the cabins for us past the new year if there are no deposits on them. Plus, all participants need passports—I’ve heard they can take up to four months at this point.
BTW, I have no problem with hanging under the bar in Chicago, Carrie. Hope to make it there soon.
So once again, thanks Sarah, and I hope to see you all on board.
