Whatcha Reading This Week?
by SB Sarah | by SB Sarah | May 04, 2012 | Friday at 2:44 pm | 86 Comments
So, what are you reading this week? Are you saving a book for the weekend? Still working on something you've been reading for awhile or is it New Book Time?
I had to stop myself from reading four or five books at a time - which is bad not only for my memory ("Wait, aren't there biker gangs in this Regency romance? Where'd they go?") but also bad for my ability to remain interested in all of the books. Making a buffet of books is not a good thing for me, though I know some readers can do it easily!
So, what is on your reading agenda this weekend?

Beguiling the Beauty by Sherry Thomas. Trying to read slowly and thoroughly so as to savor all the goodness.

I’m currently reading Fevre Dream by George R.R. Martin. There’s a library book sale tomorrow, so I may get distracted by new books.

La Nora’s “The Last Boyfriend” arrived yesterday and that’s what I’m reading tomorrow! And to the right of my comment is an add for the book. That, my friends, is serendipity.
After that, I’m going to try and finish “Champion” by Fabio (which I only picked up because of the Bitchery), and I have no idea what will be read after that. Probably something smart, as I can feel my IQ dropping whenever I open up “Champion”.

Finishing up A Week to be Wicked. After that I have a book called “College Girls: Bluestockings, Sex Kittens, and Co-eds, Then and Now” that I’m excited to sink my teeth into. Especially coming from a women’s college. (more or less about how the “college girl” has been viewed in society from the time women started getting educated to now)

GAH! I’m out of books and my holds at the library aren’t in yet. I’m trying very hard not to buy ebooks all the time but I simply can’t face a weekend bookless. I’m really enjoying the historicals, (Loretta Chase rocks), so any suggestions from the Bitchery? Have a wonderful weekend!

Julie James ‘Just the Sexiest Man Alive’ -such a good story I didn’t even realize there wasn’t any sexytimes!

I had written a post on my personal blog that I wasn’t going to check out or buy any more books until I read the ten romance novels that are still in my TBR basket from last year’s BEA. However, I can’t even seem to keep a promise to myself. I just checked out “Through No Fault of My Own: A Girl’s Diary of Life on Summit Avenue in the Jazz Age” by Coco Irvine. (It’s a non-fiction book.) I also plan on finishing the novella “Return to Delight” and reading some more of “The Welcome Home Garden Club.” In between all that reading, I’m going to work, go grocery shopping and try to see the Avengers. At least 3 out of 4 of those things will happen, I think.

A friend gave me the Ashley Chase Strangers Upstairs and Werewolf, etc books and I’ve read one and half of them so far. I’m not utterly convinced, but they are very sexy.
As far as historicals: Caroline Linden’s novella “I Love the Earl” is good.
Christine Merrill’s “Lady Drusilla’s Road to Ruin” was great (though I didn’t like the one about Drusilla’s sister Lady Priscilla as much, it was still good).
Tessa Dare’s a Week to be Wicked rocked.
As for Beguiling the Beauty, I agreed with Jane at Dear Author - the writing is great, but the romance is only so-so.

I’ll be reading Gone with the Wind, Emma, Remember Me by Christopher Pike and Song of the River by Sue Harrison which is an exciting book that’s wrapped into mystery and daily life with a killer protagonist and suspense and describes daily life of Aleuts eight thousand years ago :)

One of the most recent category romances from the medical line. Charlotte Stein’s “Things that Make me Give In”. The Bloggess’ memoir “Let’s Pretend this Never Happened.” And if I have time, I’m going to start Carly Phillips “Serendipity” or an m/m (I have Jordan Castillo Price’s “The Starving Years” and Amy Lane’s “Chase in Shadow” queued up).

I’m reading lots and lots of MM Romance at the moment. This weekend (sometime after Free Comic Book Day and seeing The Avengers), I’m hoping to re-read Magic Mansion by Jordon Castillo Price because it was fantastic.

Nora’s 2nd Boonsboro Inn, The Last Boyfriend. Its been sitting on my nightstand since I bought it, just waiting for this weekend to dig in.

I got the first two omnibus editions of the Skip Beat manga and I’ll be reading those this weekend. I’ve read the books before but that was years ago so I’m looking forward to refreshing my fond memories. I also have some other manga volumes waiting to be read that I might or might not get around to soon.
As for novels… I’m in a really bad reading slump. There’s a huge tower of books waiting on my nightstand and I don’t feel like reading any of them.

I tend to have at least two books going, and often three. One on audio, one in paper and one on kindle. I generally try to keep it to two, but I’m waiting around a lot (kids, dr’s appts, etc) that having the kindle in my purse is a good idea. Plus, if the cover of the print book I’m reading is too embarrassing to be seen in public, I take my kindle. ;-)
I do try to make sure the one I have on audio, and the main one I’m reading in print are of different genres. I don’t generally have problems with my vampire hunters showing up at the Regency ball, but I dang sure will get the storylines crossed if I try to read two historicals or two PNRs at the same time.
Right now I’m listening to Lyon’s Bride by Cathy Maxwell (historical). In print I think I’ll start Julia London’s A Light at Winter’s End (contemporary). I was so frustrated by how a Summer of Two Wishes ended that I have to find out what happens next.

I gobbled up the two new Nora books (loved The Witness, meh about The Last Boyfriend) - I had finals but no control. Now I’m going back to The Information by James Gleick (about information theory - the chapters on quantum are a bit much for my non-mathematical brain though) and trying out Sherry Thomas His At Night to see whether I like her as much as the reviewers at Dear Author do.
Becca said on 05.04.12 at 05:11 PM • [link]
oh, yeah - in audio, I’m loving Fun House, the new John Ceepak mystery by Chris Grabenstein, brilliantly read by Jeff Woodman. These are charming, twisty mysteries, not cozies but not gruesome either.

I’m reading Sharon Shinn’s latest, The Shape of Desire. I’m not liking it as much as some of her other books, especially the Samaria series, but it just started picking up some speed. I’ll say this for it: it has a male shapeshifter and no hint of the “alpha male” crap that seems so standard nowadays.

Book buffet for me. Two thirds through “The Last Boyfriend”, as unlike others, I have no will power. But the I SWEAR I will not touch “Beguiling the Beauty” until I finish my “Revenge at Bella Terra” reread for the review challange. You think the rant earlier this week was ranty? I’ve gone through half a pad of post-its. And this was the best book of the trilogy, YIKES! And then I swear I’m going to continue ignoring Sherry Thomas and read something that’s due back to the library. Julie James’ latest or maybe Moby Duck. Unless my reserve of the “Game of Thrones” DVD comes up and then I’m just couch potatoing it for gratuitous nekkid Jason Momoa.

I decided to abandon Vicki Hinze’s Double Dare, at least for a while, and am currently reading Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones.
I tend to read multiple books at a time, but it’s now usually one thing in each format - Howl’s Moving Castle is my current print book, and I’m debating which one of my e-books to start next. Right now, the ones I’m leaning towards most are Captive Bride by Bonnie Dee, Mongrel by K.Z. Snow, or Dead Man’s Rain by Frank Tuttle. I just finished Frank Tuttle’s The Mister Trophy - so far, Tuttle’s Markhat series seems like it would be a good fit for anyone who likes Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files.
As far as audiobooks go, I’m currently listening to Philip Pullman’s The Golden Compass - not romance, but it’s read by a full cast that is overall so fantastic I just had to mention it. I just finished up the bit with Tony that makes me cry every time.

-A tedious mystery
-The Girl in the Box—a futuristic romantic short story by Janet Miller.
-A Week to be Wicked—Tessa Dare
-Deadlocked—Charlaine Harris
-Beguiling the Beauty—Sherry Thomas (just started before work this AM—I waited ‘til the end of the week so I could devote some quality time to it and savor the experience)
Not sure what’s on tap next. There are 2 books from Connie Suttle’s Blood Destiny series awaiting me, but I also want to read Amanda Stevens’s Graveyard Queen series, among many others. Decision, decisions!

Just stopped everything to read Deadlocked by Charlaine Harris. Borrowed the book from my daughter who couldn’t get to it until this weekend. I’ll eventually get it for my Kindle, but I refuse to pay $14.99 for the ebook which is just 16 cents less than the hardcover.
Reading Eve by Iris Johansen on my Kindle and am listening to Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. Audible had a screaming dealing on the Outlander series audiobooks last week. $7.95 for each of the 7 titles (AND a $10 credit towards another title). I started this series years ago and lost focus about 4 volumes in. I listen to books while I knit so I usually have one of each type going. I am falling in love all over again with Jamie and Claire.
I used my $10 Audible credit towards the cost of Celebrity in Death. The audiobook then ended up being less expensive than either the hardcover or Kindle version. I go thru so many books a year, I’m always on the lookout for a bargain.

I’m in the middle of Week to be Wicked and I’m kind of bored by it. I know a lot of people really liked it here, but it’s too contrived and the characters aren’t making up for it with me. I just picked up Beguiling the Beauty, however, and I can hardly wait to dive into it.

I have just started re-reading Jeaniene Frost’s Night Huntress series. And I’m also reading ‘Blood Moon’ by Jackie French. As well as listening to ‘Let’s Pretend This Never Happened (A Mostly True Memoir)’ by Jenny Lawson, which is hilarious and insane. I also have a new sci fi romance by an author I’ve never read before ‘Ricochet’ by Sandra Sookoo.

I just finished Midwife of the Blue Ridge, which is in the genre of Pamela Clare’s historicals, or Dorothy Garlock or the Outlander books. It was well written and gripping, kept me up till 1 am. The history and lots plant and medical lore were nicely woven in, but a bit too much graphic violence for my taste. A couple of scenes were extremely disturbing.
Karin said on 05.04.12 at 08:17 PM • [link]
In fact after the Midwife book I had to reread Candace Camp’s “Suddenly” which is one of my comfort reads, just to get some lightness back. I’ll probably read Robyn Carr’s “Harvest Moon” next.

I have 284 books in the TBR folder on my Kindle and I bought ANOTHER 12 new releases this week. (stop me if you have heard this story before) Know what I’m reading? My J.D. Robb In Death stories. I started over last week from the beginning and remembered why I fall in love with them all those years ago. This. This why I can never reach the bottom literary abyss and by keeper pile grows monstrous. Damn you, authors. Damn you.

Just finished Jeffery Eugenidies’s The Marriage Plot which I liked; Elizabeth Haynes Into the Darkest Corner which was unputdownable but disturbing; in the middle of Virginia Duigan’s The Precipice which is set in the Blue Mountains where I live (pretty good but a little over written); am resisting Tana Frenchs’s Faithful Place; started and need to get back to vol.2 of the Game of Thrones and need to start Anna Funder’s All that I am for my book group. Resisting the siren call of Thomas, Milan, Roberts and Gafney. In the midst of all that I need to do some marking and gasp! some of my own writing.

Was really bummed at how much I didn’t like The Last Boyfriend. Heroine is almost a complete copy of Mac from the first Bride book and the decorating the inn parts I found really tedious. On the other hand, I read Warprize and completely fell in love with it. I hadn’t been interested initially because of the bananas covers of Vaughn’s novels (they look like 70’s van paintings) but the story she crafted is so good and the world she invented is really rich. Loved it.

I’m listening to “The Happiness Advantage” by Shawn Achor. I got it because of his awesome TED talk. Highly recommend it.
Before sleeping, I’m slowly making my way through “The Me I Want to Be” by John Ortberg.
When I can sneak time to read for pleasure, I’m reading “Head Over Heels” by Jill Shalvis.
Otherwise, I’m reading 4 blogs, twitter, the umpteen tabs I open due to links in tweets, email and approximately 50 applications for a scholarship for work.

/shaking my fist at all y’all
I also found some great deals on really random used historical non-fiction at Amazon this week, so I have a book on bananas, one on color, and one on London. And finally, I found one of the very first romances I ever read, a 1981 Harlequin by Anne Weale that I read as a teenager and I’m pretty sure it’s going to be fantastically terrible.

I’ve been going through British historical spy romances lately—Andrea Pickens spy school for girls first grabbed my attention, and then I went though the Pink Carnation series. I’ve just discovered Joanna Bourne and LOVE her stories—great characters, plenty of plot action, and an incredible voice which changes to suit the character. I’m so impressed with the way the voice (not just character’s dialog, but author’s style) sounds French with a French character, and shifts from upper class to slums when a character revisits her roots. I’ve been saving The Forbidden Rose for the weekend because I knew it would distract me from my own writing if I started it during the week.

The buffet style sampling of three or four books bit me back this week when I read two very different books but each with a young woman named Jenny. One a light and frothy paranomal mystery…the other, not so much. It would take forever to re-scramble my brain everytime I picked one up (ie- ooh the sheriff pulled Jenny to him this is gonna be good- oh wait this sheriff is a meth addicted rapist! Run, other Jenny, run!)
So I’m sticking with Tempest Rising this weekend. at least I’ll know who’s who.

After a whole bunch of stuff happened that sucked away my time, I was finally able to read (and just finished) Beekeeper’s Apprentice by Laurie R. King. And wow. It’s been so long since I’ve come to the end of a book feeling that satisfied, warm, and fuzzy. It just made me really happy after going through a group of DNFs, Cs, okay Bs, and an A-, to read a book that just rang all my bells. For me anyway, YMMV, of course. Already have the second book waiting in TBR.
About 40 pages into a YA called Servant to the Wolf by Sue Wentz. Not a paranormal, it’s about Marcus, an upper class slave boy in Ancient Rome, who gets knocked off his perch and comes to grips with his own discriminating outlook. Liking it so far, I may be a little in love with Marcus’ new master Lupus, we’ll see how it goes. I think it’s Sue Wentz’s first book, in Ebook only, here’s the amazon link, though I think it’s available elsewhere too:
http://www.amazon.com/Servant-...
Since that’s an Ebook, I’m thinking about going with Hook and Jill by Andrea Jones as my paper book read. Came across the title during the ‘Not Beauty and the Beast or Cinderella reimagined fairytales’ thread and sounded like an interesting take on Peter Pan.

When I was about 14 in the mid-80s I sneaked a copy of Cynthia Wright’s ‘You and No Other’ from a bag of books my mother and her friends were passing around. That book never made it back in the bag, it finally fell apart after numerous rereadings. I found it this week on BN, bought it, and am reading it again (25 years later).

Finished Deadlocked two days ago. I’m a big fan of the series and devoured the book as soon as I got it.
Wrapping up Pretty Pursuasion by Olivia Kingsley, which was a Kindle freebie. Good writing, engaging story - however - the heroine is totally annoying! She has constant mood swings and acts like a child, and this book has one of the most annoying tropes. There are pages and pages of conflict and the couple stubbornly not admitting their feelings when it’s SO obvious and it drove me crazy! What could have been a great novel fell flat. :-(

And now, for something completely different, I’m reading the new Anne Lamott memoir about her grandson’s first year - Some Assembly Required.

Just finished up the Wallflowers series by Lisa Kleypas and enjoyed it hugely altho I felt the last one petered out somewhat with a bit of a contrived villain. Let’s just say I felt she could have done better than that. Now I have to remember what I did with the first one in the series…
Currently taking another stab at Connealy with Out Of Control; this one is better and much more engaging altho I still get annoyed at her trope of the uneducated hero browbeating the (albeit improbably) better educated and more intelligent heroine just because he thinks he’s more sensible. Especially since she’s such a strong heroine I keep waiting for her to deck him for dissing her. Altho admittedly she does need to focus on the life-or-death problem at hand rather than her distant dream.
And just picked up Chris Wooding’s Retribution Falls as a Mother’s Day present to myself with a discount coupon. Looking forward to this as it looks like a Firefly clone and lots of fun; I kept hearing Nathan Fillion’s voice whenever I read the captain’s dialogue.

Right now I’m reading The Governess Affair by Courtney Milan. I heard so many good things about her, but I don’t usually read historicals. Since it’s a novella and only .99, I decided to start there. I really like it. I’m almost done with that, so after I finish I’m starting the Parasol Protectorate series by Gail Carriger.

I had this bright idea to hit the local thrift stores and pick up a bunch of older books to read, mostly due to my anthropology leanings and a budding theory about social trends as expressed through fantasy… and now I have I have a 30 book tall stack of “OMG, are you f’in serious!??!” that I am wading through.
So… I don’t even know what I’m reading any more, without looking through some notes. It’s all one big blur of heaving bosoms and manly thrusting, betwixt shy-feisty-sheltered-independent-abused heiress/orphan/widow/debutantes and arrogant-brooding-uptight-withdrawn-rakish Cowboy/Cajun/Viking/Space-Pilot/Viscounts. With the usual sides of raping, pillaging, manipulating, and being too stupid to live.
I would not even blink at biker gangs roaring through Regency Mayfair at this point. (Seriously… has that not happened in any of the convoluted Time Travel plots yet? Oh… wait. Maybe I had better check through the rest of my stack before I ask. It might yet be in there. :P )

I’m reading the third of the Fifty Shades Trilogy. There was a lot of good stuff in the first one, though I find the writing patchy; the second one began well but tailed off. The third one ... Just about OK, but lacks a cohesive driving force, especially at the beginning. If there had been a fourth, I wouldn’t buy it.

This is where a Kindle and its instant gratification worked well for me. I finished Fifty Shades of Grey and downloaded Fifty Shades Darker, and went on reading.

i just reread ‘on the jellicoe road’ by melina marchetta, which is amazing. it’s a YA book but it is so emotionally complex and beautiful but funny at the same time…i don’t know how she does it. it’s nice to reread books and remember why you love them so much.

Finished “Undead and Undermined” by MaryJanice Davidson yesterday morning. For those of you who threw the last book against the wall determined to never darken her door again, she does redeem herself a little. In a way that cynical me thinks might have been a bit determined by the fallout of the last book. And of course, she sets up for the next book. But hey, Betsy’s always good for a quick, funny read. But you know, I wouldn’t pay hardback prices for a book of that length, I get her from the library.
Started in right after on “Worth Any Price” by Kleypas as I work up her backlist. Gotta love a hero in a historical who has studied Tantric sex, this one is beyond steamy.
I do tend to read more than one book at a time. I’ll have a book by the bedside for a little reading before lights out. I’ll have a book for taking with me to wait on my kiddos (usually paperback for weight, and not so steamy). I’ll have a book that’s not that much a page-turner. And I’ll have the book I started when the not-a-page-turner didn’t fit my mood, LOL.

Got Krentz’s Copper Beach, I think it is, from Audible. Great narrator. Enjoyable listen. Not to much to keep up with.
Then I went ahead and got Sarah Mayberry’s My Best Worst Mistake. Am enjoying it as well. I like all of Sarah’s stuff, though, so that is not surprising. It is short, but I am seeing a natural progression/maturation of the protags. Haven’t finished it yet as the real world has gotten in the way, but well worth the $2.99. Just need to decide if I want to read the companion Blaze. Just enough info about it in MBWM to think I might need to buy it. Since I rarely pay for a Kindle book, going with the freebies and library lending and what nots, this is a big step for me, two paid-for book in a weekend.

Dreaming by Jill Barnett, which I picked up on sale for my kindle. I can’t put it down! Very different than what I was expecting - it makes you laugh and cry. I am so glad I bought it when I had the chance - so good.

I wanted to add about the Mayberry My Best Worst Mistake that while the editing seems spot on, there are definitely proofing mistakes. “It’s” is used as the possessive in a number of spots. I don’t read with stickies or a read ink pen (especially on the Kindle), but I do remember noticing last night and then again today when I picked it up that a good proofing was needed. It doesn’t take you out of the story so much, but it is noticeable and a tad irritating.

Over the w/end finished Dead to Rights (Joanna Brady novel by J. A. Jance) and started the next in the series. Read Murder On Fifth Avenue by Victoria Thompson. Started 50 Shades Darker for the 2nd time. Bought and have in my TBR pile Nora’s Book 2 of the Boonsboro Inn trilogy, The Last Boyfriend. And then there’s the rest of the hundreds of books in my TBR pile .....
