Whatcha Reading? More Traveling Edition!
by SB Sarah | by SB Sarah | December 22, 2012 | Saturday at 2:01 am | 75 Comments
Once again, it's holiday travel time. With Christmas Eve and Christmas Day falling on a Monday and Tuesday respectively, I'm betting there's a whole lot of moving around going on between yesterday and today - and waiting. Always waiting!
Which would mean that we're carrying books with us, right? I mean, when are we NOT carrying a book?
I'm currently between books and trying to figure out what to read next. I took a break from romance to read some nonfiction about efficiency and workplace prioritizing (and how being busy is not the same as being efficient or even effective) (darn it) so I'm looking for something to begin reading. It's both awesome and unnerving at the same time. Sort of like jumping in a cold pool: I have to just start reading and jump in already.
So, whatcha reading this weekend? What's making your brain and eyeballs happy?
Safe travels, happy holidays, and good reading to all of you!

I stalled out on The Wedding Shroud due to a severe case of Potato Rage. I’ll be reading the Connie Willis Miracle anthology this weekend in between crocheting beanies and baking cookies. It’s going to be fabulous!

I’m in the process of rereading a few books I read many years ago, Catherine Coulter’s FBI series. I’m starting with The Cove, and hopefully, ending 15 books later with Backfire. I don’t think all the books are related, but it’ll be fun reading them anyway.
I know what you mean about “Sort of like jumping in a cold pool.” I’m always a bit on edge reading a new book, until it grabs me. But once it does, it’s a wonderful feeling!!
Happy Holidays.

I’m about halfway through Seanan McGuire’s Discount Armageddon and enjoying it a lot. I’ll probably manage to finish it tonight or early tomorrow, depending on how much I procrastinate on cleaning. No idea what I’ll pick up after it, there’s piles and piles of books to choose from.

Stuutering through Sinister Game, hesitating in the new Meredith Duran till I actually have time to get sucked in, and hoping, wishing, for the brain space to read some literary fiction. I really want to have the energy to read The Black Count—about the real count of Monte Christo, who was Dumas’ grandfather (the black refers to his race—apparently he was this African general in Napoleon’s army and a hero of derring-do) I have such hopes for this book!

I just discovered Darynda Jones’ Charley Davidson. Gotta love a girl who names her boobs ‘Danger’ and ‘Will Robinson’ (Will for short). Full of humor and snark. And hard to beat the Son of Satan as a love interest!

I am plowing through my TBR pile. I have read 25 (!) books so far this month. Just 180 to go… ;). And as a reward, I bought more books ( just 4) on Books on boards sale :). And… after new year’s eve I can legally glomp on Edgar Wallace mysteries, since they enter Public Domain then. Yay!

I just finished Storm by Brigid Kemmerer. Next up, I think I’ll read The Trouble with Cowboys by Melissa Cutler. Happy Holidays and happy reading, everyone!

I’m reading… Everything! Seriously, now that I’ve got two weeks off for Christmas vacation, I’m hitting my TBR pile with everything I’ve got.

I’m probably going to re-read Connie Willis’ Doomsday Book, since a) I hate this time of the year so I don’t mind being gloriously depressed, and b) it makes me miss Brasenose and Oxford at Christmas.

I’m reading The Odyssey, Metamorphosis for my own book challenge, and I’m also reading Cloud Atlas, Life in Ancient Egypt and will continue to read my goodreads pile which has nine books…and hopefully eleven or so on the way…

I’ve just finished reading Julia Stuart’s The Pigeon Pie Mystery, which I didn’t find *quite* as enjoyable as her The Tower, the Zoo, and the Tortoise, but it was still charming and adorable. Just started Cassandra Rose Clarke’s The Assassin’s Curse and while I’m liking the story, the voice of the main character is aggravating me. She says a lot of stuff like “I ain’t never seen no…” and it’s making me give her a backwoods, redneck accent in my head. Which might be assholey of me, but there it is, and it’s making reading a story taking place in a fantastical desert world really weird.

Second Grave On the Left by Darynda Jones. Not feeling well but I have one less prezzie to craft and wrap.

I’m reading The Flight of Gemma Hardy by Margot Livesey. It’s bee on my list for ages and I’m so glad I’ve finally got around to it! I’m also about 100 pages into Game Change, a book about the 2008 presidential election. Not sure I’ll make it through, but it was highly recommended and is fairly interesting.

just devoured Motorcycle Man by Kristen Ashley. Stayed up wot to late last night and finished it this morning, I was so drawn into the story. I will be reading more of her work!

I’ve been alternating between early Loretta Chase with weird e-typos and Laura Resnick’s Esther Diamond novels. I just finished Polterheist, the last of Resnick’s hilarious series. I love Esther and Lopez. Even through all the silliness, their relationship just resonates.
I have The Duchess War, Loretta Chase’s Isabella and The English Witch (2 titles), and Imogen Robertson’s Circle of Shadows awaiting me on my Kindle, but I should probably attend to my library books, Sherwood Smith’s Coronets and Steel or Susan Hill’s Question of Identity. This last promises to be well written and an engaging mystery as well as due soonest, but I don’t know if I can deal will one more depressing thing this year.
Of course, I really should just forego the reading and address the crapton of work I have to do before C-day. Anyway, Merry New Year, you all.

I’m in desperate need of some good reading materiel! Everything I’ve picked up lately has been pretty humdrum. :( I just finished Johanna Lindey’s LET LOVE FIND YOU I usually enjoy her books, but this one was a bit to sweet for me. Maybe I’ll reread some of her old Skool ebooks I just bought for super cheap.

I just finished Joan Didion’s Year of Magical Thinking, and everyone who recommended it to me is not getting xmas cookies. Except maybe these spicy chocolate chews, that came out equally crappy if not so smug. But what could be? Ugh.
Also read some Shannon Stacy Shannon…whatever her name is, cute holiday novella, but novellas are not my favorite thing. I think Donna Kauffman (Kaufmann? one of the consonants is doubled, but which?) is next.

Just finished The Duchess War by Courtney Milan and a cute novella called One Hit Wonder by Elyssa Patrick. Now reading a mystery set in the ancient Roman empire called Persona Non Grata, by Ruth Downie. I probably wouldn’t have picked this up except that it was on sale for 99 cents as the Kindle Daily Deal and I figured I’d give it a try. I’m really enjoying it, and I may read the rest of the series.

Just started “The Gift” by Julie Garwood but I’m not sure I can finish it; the heroine is a little to contrived and “blinky” for me. I’ve been reading only historicals for quite awhile and it may be time to change gears. A friend arrives today and will loan me the latest Dresden Files installment which may just do the trick. Any recommendations on really good Regencies???

Well I was a quarter of the way into Grave Peril, by Jim Butcher, when I went to go see The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.
So I kinda got distracted and have been rereading the The Hobbit and watching the LotR movies, and North & South and other things with Richard Armitage in them.
When I’m done the Hobbit I’ll finish the Dresden Files book and then (probably, I never stick to planned reading) either reread The Fellowship of the Ring or Persuasion. Or maybe The Tempest: A Guy of Gisbourne Story by Charlotte Hawkins. Or whatever else catches my fancy.

I’m reading Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. I’m really enjoying it much more than I thought I would. People keep recommending 2312 as one of the best books of 2012, so I might read that after.

I’m currently reading Lois McMaster Bujold’s The Vor Game (just like The Warrior’s Apprentice, it’s good but, wow, kind of exhausting) and Ben Aaronovitch’s Midnight Riot. After those two, I’ll probably tackle Anne Somerville’s Kei’s Gift and George R.R. Martin’s Game of Thrones. I’ve got a nice, long break from work, and two nice, long books seem like a good idea.

I just started Spider Bites and am enjoying it so far. Glad I stopped by this thread to find out that Edgar Wallace is coming into the public domain. I grew up on Edgar Wallace (English mother) and the paper books have gotten very hard to get in Canada.

I just read Heat by R. Lee Smith. It was reviewed by dearauthor.com. WOW! It’s not for the faint of heart but I couldn’t put it down. I read until 3am and forced myself to stop reading so I could get up in 3 hours to go to work. I’ve never read anything like it. Has anyone else read it?

I’ve just started reading The Taker by Alma Katsu—the jury is still out. It is definitely different from pretty much anything I’ve ever read before, so there is that. I heard about this book at the December Lady Jane’s Salon and after hearing some of the sequel, I just had to read this one.

I loved Sweet Dreams by KA, and I especially loved the many on-line discussions about how awesome the story was while the editing was pretty terrible. It was so addictive, though, despite the desperate need for trimming some excess wordage.

Just finished An Abundance of Katherines by John Green and planning to read The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde and Naked by David Sedaris

Just finished Tempting the Bride by Sherry Thomas. This morning, started Trouble Won’t Wait by Autumn Piper, who is my editor at Lyrical Press and an awesome developer of character.
Also on my TBR list for this vacation week: Backstage Pass by Olivia Cunning (which is supposed to be muy caliente) and Kiss of Death, the second in Debbie Viguie’s Kiss Trilogy, which is like Raiders of the Lost Ark meets Twilight targeted to the inspirational romance crowd. That’s right, I go from naughty erotica to tame inspirational romance without batting an eye. I’m complex like that.

I’ve saved Milan’s The Duchess War, Carla Kelley’s Mrs. Drew Plays Her Hand and Steel’s Edge by Ilona Andrews for over Christmas. For the following week I’m reading the entire Vorkosigan Saga with my boys. It will be a lot of fun to read these together for the first time. I’m going to listen to The Discovery of Witches audio book while traveling. I’ll be the woman ignoring the male members of her family, we’re five so I usually sit by myself. I’ts like a mini reading vacation with only a few pesky interruptions.
Oh and Sarah, I’m still carting books, I can’t help myself!
I just finished listening to I’ve Got Your Number by Sophie Kinsella, I liked it better in print, Poppy was less sympathatic and likeable in audio, but the reader did a GREAT job wih all the footnotes. It is just the sort of book to read or listen to at this time. Lots of Laughs.
Happy Holidays Bitches!! Have a Great New Year!

I have been so busy the last few months I’ve barely read anything, but I finally squeezed in some time to read A Season for Surrender. So good. What a lovely story! Not the best one ever, but certainly one of the best Christmas books I’ve read. Just awesome.

Allairegifford—I loved Heat. My husband read it too and really enjoyed it as well. I also really enjoyed “The Care and Feeding of Griffins” by the same author (in fact I loved the whole series, but have heard others say they were let down by the other books, so read at your own risk I guess!)
pamelia said on 12.22.12 at 04:56 PM • [link]
I stalled out in two books “Grease Monkey Jive” (I found the head-hopping rather distracting and the tone of the book seemed all over the place to me) and “The Proposition” (just way too twee and generic for my taste). I loved “Wallbanger”, but decided to do a romance palate cleanse and am now reading the really good (so far) “Cephrael’s Hand” by Melissa McPhail.

I’m re-reading James Herriot’s memoirs - finished All Creatures Great and Small and have All Things Bright and Beautiful next in line. I first read these when I was 10 or 12ish and they were the first books I read that weren’t written for children. And so far, they’re holding up pretty well to re-reading.
I just finished Room at the Edge by Jane Davitt and Alexa Snow - m/m/m bdsm sequel to Room at the Top. I really enjoyed it, although I think I may be over bdsm romance for awhile.
I’ve been devouring holiday novellas - standouts include Carol of the Bellskis (m/m Hanukkah) and Turkey in the Snow by Amy Lane (m/m Christmas). Next up is the Carina anthology A Galactic Holiday.
FairyKat said on 12.22.12 at 05:35 PM • [link]
I too stalled out on Grease Monkey Jive. It was too many kinds of book, I felt. There was the real Australian surfing mechanic stuff, the Strictly Ballroom stuff (which just reminded me how much better Strictly was), the was a reality TV Strictly Come Dancing vibe, way too many secondary characters who took up too much story oxygen, and then there was this metaphysical ‘what is it to be a man’ question that got crowded out by all the other stuff.

I’m reading My Steadfast Heart by Jo Goodman, book 1 in the Thorne Brothers trilogy. I’ve got all 3, but I’m not sure I’ll make it that far. In book 1, the H/H went from “I hate you” to “let’s get married” awfully fast, and most of the angst could be fixed if they’d just *talk* to each other - Heroine can’t seem to tell Hero the truth to save her soul, even when it doesn’t matter.
I’m taking a long trip, and I’ve got Cetaganda and Brothers In Arms lined up on the iPod, because after reading Captain Vorpatril’s Alliance (twice!) I need more Ivan. I’ve got the Agent of Change sequence by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller on my Kindle for reading on the plane.

Reading Mary Balogh’s “Xmas Bride, Xmas Beau.” It’s great b/c I can run errands, cook, wrap Xmas gifts, iron linens, etc., & when I get back to reading it’s familiar and heartwarming, silly. Of course I’m only on page 4 LOL!

I just started Lauren Willig’s The Betrayal of the Blood Lily. Next up for my holiday break reading will be Martin Walker’s Black Diamond (third in a mystery series that’s one of my new favorites). After that, I think I’ll just pull out my Kindle and see what looks tempting on my ever-growing virtual TBR pile.

Got to check out a lot of the books mentioned! I just finished a Madeline Brent re-read (comfort stuff). I am part way through Jessica Shirvington’s Embrace. It’s an interesting story and nicely written. However, I am constantly aware that it’s YA which is not the case with a lot of the YA I read. So starting to stall. Also reading Steve Umstead’s Gabriel’s Redemption - nicely done, very traditional scifi, though the women are better characters than in the scifi I read in the 60s. I will certainly finish this one and will probably read the sequels.

Next up will be A Lady Awakened by Cecelia Grant or The Hobbit…undecided. (Sidenote-The new Hobbit movie is awesome!)

I haven’t been able to get much reading done the past couple of weeks. It makes me very cranky and out of sorts when I don’t read. Reading isn’t just a pleasant pasttime for me; it’s essential for my mental wellbeing.
That said, I did read Sorcery and Cecilia which I enjoyed very much. I was sorry I had to miss the chat since I’d been looking forward to it.
I also read the latest book by Connie Suttle. I LOVE her books. Thank goodness she’s a speed writer. And I’m mere pages away from finishing Barbara Metzger’s Father Christmas. I’m not sure what I’ll pick up next, but it will most likely be one of the many other Christmas-themed books in my TBR pile.

Haven’t had much time for reading lately, so the books have stacked up. Started “Fantasy in Death” by J.D. Robb last night in my continuing quest to catch up on this series. On the pile are the latests by Liz Carlyle, Christine Feehan, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Meg Cabot, and Victoria Dahl. Also have “Ice” by Karen Marie Moning. Was looking forward to this, but haven’t really gotten into it. Maybe because Dani is only 14 and I prefer older protags so there is at least a possibility of a love interest with sexy times, or maybe because the first part is a catch-up of the Fever series. Have the latest from Kresley Cole waiting at the library but haven’t managed to find time to get there to pick it up.

I have Kameron Hurley’s Rapture and Cast in Peril by Michelle Sagara on my Kindle to read, and just finished Valors Trial by Tanya Huff, finally rounding out that series.
Bright blue skies, 25+ deg, slap on the sunscreen and enjoy a walk up to a waterfall today. Enjoy your holidays :)

I love holiday reading time! I’ve read more books than I can think of over the past week, but the most recent winner is Disappearing Nightly by Laura Resnick (so much more endearing than the Stephanie Plum novels to me). I’m also working on Scorpions by Noah Feldman about FDR’s Supreme Court justices. Always on the lookout for more fun mystery/adventure novels like Disappearing Nightly or Mindy Klasky’s Fright Court!

On the non-fiction side, I really enjoyed The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg this summer and am currently reading The End of Overeating by Dr. David Kessler. So far I’m still in the delicious phase of the book, not the “this is how your food is killing you” or “this is how you stop being obsessed with food” parts. Next up for nonfic is The Violinist’s Thumb and The Disappearing Spoon, both by Sam Kean. And for fiction I’ve got the latest Courtney Milan waiting for me. All in all, happy book time!
